Gratitude is so huge. And not in some meaningless blind optimism sense, but in an earned way like what you talk about - a logical mechanism that creates a significant result.
I really like the distinction between "not very grateful" and "ungrateful" from the perspective you make. And the baseline of "something is working in my life" is very important. This whole discussion moved me emotionally.
Thinking a lot about what you said. Sorry if I take this part to a type discussion but I wonder if (though still hard) it is more natural for ENFP's to see and appreciate gratitude because Si helps ground and reduce negative Ne potentials while Ne sees possibilities that help Si know it is not as bad as it could be. Thinking from an INFJ perspective, lacking both in the top 4 functions, it can be natural to try to rely on Ni and Se to try to live or make the future. But that just covers up potentially constant feelings of lack in the moment. And if Ni fails then one has a crisis of faith. When our functions lose perspective or have a crisis Ne-Si can spiral while Ni-Se is more like a car crash. The gratitude you speak of and live through your life is so much healthier than the alternatives! I do work on accessing gratitude in the way you describe. But something that seems to help me powerfully is being in nature. For instance, when I see the birds, I remember that they didn't need to strive in their Ni plans for the future. They just live their lives. At the end of the day I'm just supposed to live my life like they live theirs. While Ni can give me great energy and comfort at times, it will never give me peace because only the present truly exists. Because once I achieve a future I'll just go to the next one. Not truly enjoying the accomplishment. The point is to be grateful and present in the moment even if you have Ni or Se. Worth is not about accomplishments. It's the moments all around us. Be grateful for all moments, even if we had nothing to do with them. Enjoy moments, even as one keeps an eye toward future possibilities! P.S. for Crystal, this is Ed 😀
