Sometimes I struggle with a plant for way to long before I decide to finally look up it's native environment, please tell me I'm not alone in this 😅. Luckily I found a great way to fix up those "out of hand pileas" 😁. Have a peek into my last video about "The most wanted plant updates of the year" :th-cam.com/video/JRMyChbXVEk/w-d-xo.html I feel like it is one of my best videos editing-wise ^^
Love my pilea! I give it lots of bright indirect light from a west facing window. I rotate it once a week to keep the stem straight. I put on my humidifier once a day too. I live in Ontario Canada and got it in the winter, and it's still producing lots of leaves! I don't use terra cotta pots because it dries the plant more quickly. I also use distilled water only to water and use a moisture meter to let me know when to water. These are my tips for success!
Finally someone who is successful with this plant 👏. You're really doing everything you can for your Pilea, no wonder it's thriving, great job! I'm going to pin this for everyone who wants tips and experiences 💚 Thank you for sharing, Jenn.
The new growth on my Pilea has been so so warped but I have taken it away from the window but maybe it is still getting to much light! I love this plant a lot and I had no idea there were so many types of variegation, thank you for sharing!
Maybe it is the light but @Eline Ross suggested it might also be incosistent watering ,since she had the same issue with her pilea having warped leaves. I'm glad I could introduce you to the variegated versions of this plant 😇 Just don't spend all your money on them immediately 😅
Hi Kristina :)....I am in the middle with this plant....I never have given mine the best life, but it is still alive and I should pay more attention to her! My comments keep getting erased from youtube so if you do not hear from me, I am still watching and writing, it is happening with a couple channels I watch :(....but I will keep trying snd always loving your channel! Keep your wings up!
Hi Justina. Don't worry about it I know you are a sweetheart! I checked the "spam folder" for comment but there is no comment from you in there luckily 💚 I think I also got you last one & as always it make my day to hear from you again. I totally feel you on the topic of not giving a plant the best life, maybe it's just not as important to us. I don't think that's a bad thing. You might want to think about it though, maybe it's a candidate for the next plant purge. 😂
Love this video. I have 2 small ones & they displayed some of the issues you mentioned. Now I have a better understanding of how to care for them. Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful & as always thank you for watching Carol 💚! I think it isn't necessarily a bad thing when they show these signs, maybe you don't even mind the missing leaves on the bottom but. It is kind of a natural way of the seasons but if it does bother you, then I'm sure with some attention and experimentation you can provide them with the perfect conditions 💪. See u soon :)
You have given me an idea to try with one of my Pilea children. Because they grow on rocks as moss does, I am thinking that wick watering in very shallow pots with either mostly perlite mix, or moss may work. Maybe I will mount one on a rock and sit it in water. That would give it high humidity as well.
That's a great idea actually! I imagine this to look stunning, just sitting on a nice rock. I think I need to try that as well, it could be a really fun planty project ☺️. Thank you for the inspiration & for watching of course 💚
Yep, struggle with this too, especially in wintertime! By the way, the wobbly leaves can also be a result of inconsistent watering, that's the case with me :o)
Great tip Eline, I didn't know this can be the case too. I'll pass it on to someone in the comments here, because they were struggling with warped leaves despite the light contions being ok. 🙏 Thank you for sharing!
My pilea is very similar to your mature version. It has gotten very leggy and is bald from the soil up to about half way up. I'm also getting lots of brown leaves. I'm going re-propogate as you suggest. Thanks for the video.
I recently purchased my first Pilea , I think I’m going to enjoy it an I think it’s going to be my new favourite! Also thank you for sharing this information I think it will be very helpful going foward
That's exciting George, wish you a lot of luck with your new Pilea. May the plant gods be with you and let it grow beautifully 😅. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, see u in the next one 😉
That's interesting cause I don't have any other pilea in my collection and I have no idea what other kinds are out there. I have to google the ones you mentioned 👀.
I love this plant, but I struggle with them too. I think these tips will help though. Mine are currently healthy, but not producing. Of course, I live in New England, and it's a lot cooler now.
I feel that, there are always phases of good growth and maybe in the future it might not grow as well for a while but thta's alright. I also came to terms with the seasons and particularly winter, just being tough on plants and that there is not much I can do for my plants regarding that. I can't possibly put all my plants in a perfect warm and bright environment under a grow light or in a propbox 😅😅😅
mine got killed from little flys who put their eggs inside the top part of the stem etc, also into the baby ones growing from the side of my pot :( got a new one now.. hoping itll go better very interesting video tho, i sure can apply some things u said so chances might be better haha :)
Does anyone know how many of the pilea babies can I keep with the mother because for me there's 5 of them and the mother plant is starting to flop down because of them I think
As far as I know, it is not enough to cut and root the leaves. The leaf will survive and live on as a ghost leaf. It's important to cut out a piece of the stem with the leaf attached and root it afterward. I believe only the stem has meristematic tissue and thus has the ability to grow new plants from it.
Ive had 2 of these Pileas ....killed the first....then was gifted another 😞. It did poorly for me so I kicked it outside when Spring came where my husband cut all the leaves off the mother plant, set it on the deck table and watered often adding Miracle Gro fertilizer a couple times a month and it became a big beautiful plant! So in September I had to bring it back inside 😞 and its slowly lost many leaves and looks bad. Its in an East facing Minnesota USA window. I repotted with new soil and now waiting for it to dry out 50% till watering again per online info and the maybe fertilize??? IDK what to do next....move to South window? Help!
Oh boy this is exactly what happened with 3 of my pileas this year 😅 I feel you. I had them out for the summer (in direct sun) and they never looked better! Now in autumn I took them back inside. And they look sad again. Put them in the sunniest spot in the house (south or south west sounds good). If they still produce new leaves you can lightly fertilize. Maybe also check the roots if the plant needs a repot after the summer growth spurt. I wish you all the best for your pilea, at least now you know next summer it will be pretty again.
@@LeafyLuster thank you for the encouragement. I repotted 2.5 weeks ago, roots looked fine. Watered till it ran out the bottom and I'm still waiting for it to dry out before watering again. I did put it right back in my MN east window and it continued to lose leaves so this week I moved it to a South window. Now we will wait and see. I might try bottom feeding and may try a diluted fertilizer if sun doesn't work it's magic.....if we get some sun that is!😂
Yup that happend to me sooo often. Even though I have a fairly big one now, it still looses the bottom leaves. Honestly I can't really figure out how to stop it completely 🤦♀️
I have way over 100 plants and heaps of success with almost all basic plants. Except these lil fuckers… I’ve killed every mother plant. But when I prop them and make more little plants they all do well… I am a chronic under waterer so maybe that’s why
Sounds so familiar to me 😂😂😂 But honestly often times also with other plants I find that propagations grow better in my care than the motherplants I bought from the shops. At least pilea propagates so damn well 😅
Why don't you stake your Pilea on a pole of some kind? I see your big one is flopped over like a trailing plant. It seems to be ok. Much fuller than mine. I have mine of a pole. The main stem is way too tall with leaves only on the top 1/3 rd. of the stem. Very discouraging. I'm tempted to chop it off like you did in this video. I need to be braver to do that. I should have done that a year ago. I have two babies that are doing well. I think I'll keep them with the mother to fill out the plant. I may check out Lowes to see if they have a Pilea that needs a home and experiment with cutting down the main stem, see if it survives. Thanks for the details in this video. So many plant videos show one plant while talking about another topic. Not informative at all.
All my other Pilea I try to grow upwards with a support stake, but I saw a picture of a Pilea on pinterest one day, that was also leaning over and I liked it so much I wanted to try it out myself 😁
Hahaha a very common sentiment :D:D This year I had my Pileas outside for the summer for the first time. They got a ton of sun and rain and they absolutely loved it. I never seen them thrive like this! Unfortunately I had to bring them back inside now so I am very worried about the winter now 😱😱
@@LeafyLuster omg this gives me so much hope. I had my croton outside from mid spring til now and it absolutely thrived too! I’m scared of putting it back indoors for winter cuz my apartment cold and the light is not sufficient for croton. Wishing the best of luck to both of us!! 💜
OMG, yeah. Pilea Peperomioides, I got it, because everyone said how great, a must have, the be-all-end-all. I hated it from the time I got it. Stuck it on a dark shelf & tried to kill it with neglect for 3 years, but it just kept hanging on - and hung on well?! Don't know how, but I finally felt bad for abusing a living being and now I water it. Definitely a hate / love relationship, but at least the abuse is over ;) My apologies to the plant gods!!

I give it a lot of bright light, and let soil dry out at least 90%, then water it very well. It seems this plant likes that very much.
Ok ..I'm currently obsessed with pilea pepermoides. I probably have 10 ...I had no idea that they had variegated versions😮.

Sounds amazing, the Soltech lights are great from what I heard. Wishing you all the best for you plant, so it stays that way 😊🤞
Very interesting advice to sauve and propagate pilea, thanks a lot 🙏🏻
Happy to help & inspire Fabienne 💚 Since I'm still learning a lot about plant care every day I have to restart plants often ^^

I started a leaf cut and the roots grew well. I planted it and it is still alive. However, after 5 months it’s still just one leaf. Is this normal?

I recently got one and like 3-4 leaves dropped probably due to the cold temperatures. So I move the location and the leaves stopped dropping.
Yesss, that's what I'm talking about, just being attentive and trying out what works for your plants, you're doing an amazign job Krystal! 👏👏👏
