@@12voltvids I know, but for my parents, these things absorb too much and electricity bills going up like crazy.
I've a question for you, Dave...
Did you ever work on the first cd player ever made by Sony (CDP-101)?
      I noticed something very strange.
On the switching power supply, the rails wroted on the PCB are completly wrong.
Example: on the 12v rail, I've 34v DC.
On 5v rail, I've 10v DC and ecc..
The unit work like a charm. I've changed the Focus/Tracking servo op amp for the skipping issue.
      It reads and sound amazing.
      Thank you.

@@Naitoraven951 yes I know. I will be getting an uneasent surprise in a few weeks. Probably hit 1000.00 for 2 months. That's the price to stay comfortable. As to your high rails on power check the small caps on the primary side of the PSU for high esr before some day you hear whey sounds like popcorn popping and find a home in every chip. The old switch mode supplies control the voltage by shifting the frequency of the chopper they operated on the low side of the transformer resonence shifting lower to drop the voltage shifting higher and frequency to raise the voltage. When caps dry out they can't drop the voltage the oscillator keeps running higher and higher and frequency getting that transformer closer to its resonence frequency. This causes the voltage to creep up and eventually something is going to blow. Panasonic did the same thing in their early VHS machines and we would get VCRs in with multiple component failure. Every IC had a whole blown in it. Beyond repair. Panasonic solve this problem temporarily by putting Xander diodes in the power supply that would act as a crowbar and blow the power supply when they got into this condition. Later designs they moved the frequency higher so that it operated above the resonant frequency of the transformer. They would drop the frequency to increase the voltage and raise the frequency to decrease the voltage. This way when caps dried out which they always do especially in power supplies the frequency would rise and the voltage would gradually fall off to the point that at some point the unit wouldn't run and would go in for service we change the one cap that went bad and the unit was back in service. The early designs operated the opposite way the voltage would go up and the unit would go boom.

@@12voltvids Hey Dave, I've found the problem!
      Wrong GND 🤣.
I don't know why, but... Using the correct GND, my meter give me the correct voltages.
      So, I think it's fine!
      Take care!!!

The aluminum arm that pulls the tape to the synchronous head only has one hole in the original version. The replacement part from SONY had a sintered bearing.

I was trying to change my pinch roller and unfortunately the tower gear fell off and I inserted it the wrong way. Now the mechanism is jammed. Would it be possible to let me know how to re-align this? The only source of instructions/repair are your videos. Thank you so much!

Sony CFD-S01 Boombox has an issue in the cassette mechanism. When I pressed the Play button the pinch roller does not pressed against the capstan. There is a small gap in between these two. Is it possible to repair?

I have a Sony SLV-R1000. It started playing all tapes in slow motion and briefly plays in normal speed. It'll do that consistently on any tape. I wonder if it's the capstan causing that?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Probably the capstan bearing has bent. Let's see aluminum support that the capstone fits in it bends and when it bends it causes the rotor to start to catch on the stator. If you pull the bottom off the unit and actually pull the magnet the rotor down from the from the stator itself it's held in place by the magnetic force of the magnet so you can pull it down and you'll see if it's been rubbing you'll see because the coils will show indication that it's been rubbing against the rotor. There was an upgraded bearing assembly for most of these machines but that part is long gone what you have to do is you have to twist it back. I've done videos where I've straightened it up pair of needle nose pliers onto the capstone bearing housing and you kind of bend the top of it towards the front panel because what happens is from the spring pressure when it's playing a tape is putting constant pressure pushing the caps and assembly towards the rear of the machine I'm at aluminum housing the bracket in other words starts to bend very very common problem on all those machines

@@12voltvids Good to know. If replacing the cracked worn blue gear on mine doesn't fix the problem, I'll look for clues under the capstan. Most the problem started after I used the Allsop casette head cleaner. The tape kept running and I heard gear grinding and slipping. Very well could be lack of tension on tape, due to the cracked and worn blue gear, that was causing the problem. Thank you for all your videos and tips, it's helped a lot.

@@3DEditor we used to love alsop cleaning tapes because it was a guaranteed way to make money. We never sold them at the shop at work that because when it broke the machine people will be expecting it to be fixed for free because we sold it but the competition sold lots and I got to fix lots of machines and charge lots of money to fix it and when I asked why it broke I said you should alsop cleaner didn't you they said yes there you go knowing that they were going to go back and scream at the store that sold it to them and ruined some clerk or salesperson's day and that made me feel good.

I have a problem with my Sony SLV-SE720 VHS player.
Lower part of picture have distortion line and one tenth of picture is not showing. I tried to adjust supply and take-up adjustable guide rollers, but they just introduce additional streaks and not affect the lower distorted part.
I tried to clean head and all parts, but nothing.
Earlier there wasn't this issue and it came after player sitting for several years.
