You're a natural teacher. This is easily the best basic tutorial on bricklaying I have seen. Brilliant.

You are a wonderful teacher. Several times you mentioned, "This may be obvious," but NOTHING IS OBVIOUS TO A BEGINNER. So many teachers skip things that they do by instinct at this point, but you lay (pun intended) it out. Great work.

Very true, been an apprentice for almost 3 years and the only thing that has saved me is the desire to learn.
Just as you said there are so many things that have become almost second nature to bricklayers that they automatically assume is common knowledge it’s unreal. And when new guys come into the trade and get yelled at for not knowing things they end up quitting.
Here in Canada. The trade has a ton of work but it is in some ways dying because not many new people are coming in

I’m likely never going to lay even 1brick in my life. That said, I found this video fascinating. As a professional trainer, I was blown away by your patient and detailed explanations. Loved your humble humanity vs so many who use training to inflate their egos and showcase their skills. Well done.

I just wanted to thank you for your posts! I spent a few hours last night going through how to mix mortar and how to true up lines and today I went out and rebuilt my chimney. Now, no one is going to recruit me for a brick layer's union, but the job is completed and I won't have to be ashamed to walk into my house. I also got compliments from my neighbor who is a retired contractor! Apparently I at least looked like I knew what I was doing! Thank you for making it doable.

Arrived at this video a few years too late…..but if you can’t lay bricks after watching this video, then it probably isn’t for you. Just about everything covered in an easy to understand way. I used to work for an old boy when I was a nipper and he more or less taught me the same things as this. I’m not a bricky but I’ve never forgotten what he taught me. So glad I watched this. Cheers fella…great video! 👍

RE FROG: When you mold a brick, part of the mold is called the kicker. The kickers in the mold help push the clay into position, it takes out air and makes the brick solid. The Dutch word for frog is "kikker". So you have an English person teaching a Dutch person (kicker), who then translates that to frog ad teaches an English person ..... Frog sticks,.

Good informative video, Rodian. Easy to follow for the would-be apprentices watching your channel.👍I remember my first couple of days on site as an apprentice in 1984 my journeyman just gave me a spot board full of mortar and had me loading the trowel and spreading a bed on the board over and over again for both shifts! I was thinking WTF have I let myself in for, but it was the perfect introduction to the trade, make the trowel an extention to your arm and it makes the rest of the job so much easier.

You explain it in a way that even the greenest of noobs can go out on a jobsite and look like he has a lot more experience than he really has, and get the job done right! The way people hold the tools and materials, certain movements and etc easily gives it away if you know what you're doing or not!

    Rodian
I have followed you for quite a long time around the time you put your footings in, you have such a good manor to your presentations and has inspired me to a garden wall project, I will be starting this summer is it possible you could do some front door steps with curves also how to cut the brick to maintain 10 mill on the radius , if you don't cut it looks poor to the eye!
Lastly please give an update how your wife is doing health wise please
I do hope you continue youtubing after house is built , god bless your wife and you its a privelidge to be part of your team .

Brilliant video. I'm learning Bricklaying in College at the moment. I started last week and we did the basics and had a little go of laying a bed and then the bricks on top of it and it was great. It's just rolling the Mortar and scooping it on to the Trowel is my issue 😂. I'll get the hang of if eventually tho.
