The fact that they thought she was going to die but didn't put her out of her misery is wild. They were just gonna leave her to suffer for possibly days.
Good thing they did though or she would’ve been killed But I get the point if that wasn’t the case in the movie that would’ve been horrible to do because the animal would suffer
If you look closely , you can see Rain’s body changing throughout the movie. I’m pretty sure there was a scene where Rain had foals with Spirit. I don’t remember exactly , but that signifies Rain being pregnant by Spirit in a portion of the movie. In this clip , rain has a un-particularly large stomach. I can’t be sure , but she had a larger stomach than Spirit. Due to her Pregnancy , it made Spirit more determined to save her when she got shot by the gorge. Spirit has a brave personality , His name is literally ‘Spirit’. But after making Rain pregnant gives him more pride as a father , and as the leader of his herd. He just couldn’t risk losing Rain and the foals she is carrying. Like I said , It makes him twice more determined. So that’s possibly why he risked his own life to save Rain’s ( and the foals’ ) I’m guessing Rain’s pregnancy started when the couple was at the Lakota village. That’s when Spirit was learning how to ‘behave’. That’s exactly when their love blossomed. After that scene , Rain’s stomach gradually started to grow. This is just my opinion , but I still think it’s very likely this might’ve happened.
Spirit could just pretend that he was so weak as Rain as well just like when he later pretended that he died or become so weak when he and other horses pulled a train.
