- Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson LP: 1980
We've all heard so many conflicting words
About life, whether wrong or right
How you gotta be workin' hard
And it ain't no easy job
To survive. Just keep it alive
We've all come to think of ourselves as links
In a chain, so much to gain
We are the ones who tie our fathers to our sons
Don't you know, that's how we grow
(Chorus)
What my life really means is that the songs that I sing
Are just pieces of a dream that I've been building
And we can make a stand and hey, I'm reachin' out my hand
'Cause I know damn well we can if we are willing
But we gotta be....
Got to be willing (X3)
Well we've all been so close to getting in
It's always nice, with no sacrifice
But times have changed and it's no longer strange
To make a few corrections in our direction
'Cause being strong is more than just holdin' on
To advance, you gotta take a chance
Waitin' on line, it ain't nothin' but marking time
Won't get nowhere, just standing there
Chorus
What my life really means is that the songs that I sing
Are just pieces of a dream that I've been building
And we can make a stand and hey, I'm reachin' for your hand
'Cause I know damn well we can if we are willing
But we gotta be....
Got to be willing (X3)
(Repeat last chorus)
Get this banger BACK ON SPOTIFY FFS!!!
It used to be :( it's where I first heard it.....i'm gonna buy the album now. Not bad to have it, but I'd love it to be in Spotify too
Just noticed it’s disappeared from my playlist. What’s with that?
@@simonpratt1716 probably hus relatives arguing about royalties. They always done that since he died. Greed and jealousy
@@dandycliff2 such a shame :(
Been listening to this continuously for 43 years, and I still get a little chill when the opening chords start.
The 1980 Album was looked upon as being commercial. I told Gil on two occasions that it took me 25 years to realize that the ENTIRE album is about going forward👊🏿
It still sounds promising, sad and experimental!
@@minorsnow5306 it's sounds like it was made for 2020 second turning of the decade is here today New year's Eve 2020
Kerwin, how did Gil comment in regards to this album? I've heard Brian Jackson say that Gil thought the album was "doing too much" in reference to the music outweighing the message maybe?
Thanks for the question and I apologize for the delay. Brian’s focus was jazz and Gil ‘s focus was “word” and blues. If you recall they separated shortly after the completion. Shut ‘‘em Down, Push Comes to Shove, 1980 and Corners music appeared to be different just like change is different. Most if Gil’s prior albums I feel the music was aggressive and strong. Similar to how Miles Davis expresses himself and similar to how Nina Simone expresses herself.
Gil Scott Heron should be in Cleveland...R&R hall of fame!
No doubt Steven No doubt.
He is now.
He is now.
My fathers song right here. Every time he played the album he would play Hold On To Your Dream for me, then he played this about 3 times. Knew the song word for word. Great times!!!
Thats beautiful
It's a great song one of my favorites I discovered this when I was in 8th grade back in 92 diggin through Mom and Dad's record crete's it's a great song for times now as well. 😎
I could listen to this song on repeat all day long
A classic that has a true meaning in 2020.
Real talk bro
Right like how h gotta be working and it ain't no easy job. And how they want us to think we're all links in a chain
This song I often feel went unnoticed. This song like all of the rest should be included with Gil’s finest. The entire 1980 Album is about going forward. Remember, “space is the place but you stayed on the ground” how forward was that?👊🏿
Gil was power he sang with purpose. Rest in power brother ...messages recieved.

Definitely in Gil's Top 10 and that's saying something. Drew on him a whole bunch in the early 80's as an undergraduate. A great one for sure.

My mother first tuned me in to this song when it came out because she liked--and I liked it---haven't heard it in years. This was the first song I ever heard by GSH--I've never heard of him at the time, and wouldn't really get into his music until my stepdad bought home a collection of his songs, and I heard "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" ,:"Lady Day & John Coltrane", "Pieces Of A Man" and I was hooked. Only the jazz and college stations played his music,though--he was a remarkable talent--R.I.P.
