    Mixed in Key - and the software folks who make it (and Odesi...?) - are some of the best in the business. MIK has been a staple for me for many, many years and I love it! Once you buy the regular MIK software, THEY GIVE YOU FREE UPGRADES which is awesome! 👍🏾I will def consider getting this software. Great video as always! 🤙🏾

    i'm getting this! iv been using tuner spectrum and converting a file to harmony/melody to try and figure out the key and progression. As a fairly new producer with no music theory skills this looks amazing!

    Just a quick follow up. I didnt think I'd use this a ton but is been super helpful! Besides figuring out kicks and stuff, an engineer just asked me to create my song catalog and get the key and BPM for all my tracks. I had never done this and sorry but I dont remember what key the 7th song I worked on last year is in! Haha! Saved probably a half hour of diving into each song individually.

    Great review, man. I've known about Mixed In Key for a while, but at the time was really just focused on composing and producing music wasn't really serious about DJing. Well, years later, now I'm getting back into it and I just had to say "goodbye" to the DAW I grew up on (FL) :_(. I bought Live and Denon DJ's MC4000 DJ controller (about to buy either Serato DJ pro or Traktor pro 3 once I compare them. I'm really funkin' exited about this, but I have a question regarding Mixed In Key (may be a dumb question, so please just humor me, lol)... Would you recommend buying both Mixed In Key and Mixed In Key Studio Edition? Oh... And also, what DJ software do you use/would you recommend? Thanks for the informative video, Slynk. Jam on!

    Planning your entire set out in ableton? :( i guess you’re a producer-first artist but come on man, keep the spirit of mixing alive. I see those tables in the back haha. Either way, love ur vids Slynk!!

    • @Bejeerk
      @Bejeerk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well... To be fair, I kinda do the same, but I just plan it before the set, just to get an idea of all the songs to put in, in what order, and how I plan to mix them, but when I'm in front of people, for the actual set, I still mix, if I were to play a pre-recorded set, I would be bored to death and feel terrible, haha, already did that once and it was the worst set of my life because I felt like I was lying to people.

    • @Slynk
      @Slynk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Maybe you misunderstood what I mean. I plan the set in Ableton. It's a sketch book for ideas and stuff. I figure out what mixes we'll together and stuff. Then I render out all the edits, remixes and mashups I create in Ableton like little Lego blocks which I then perform live on turntables with Serato. I do scratch routines and mix everything live.

    • @adonis2418
      @adonis2418 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Slynk I understand it completely. I find creating mashups and things beforehand to be an interesting grey area for me. Maybe I'm more of a freestyle purist I guess. Didn't mean to sound like I'm knocking your style homie.

    • @Slynk
      @Slynk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Freestyle is fun and all, but you should try preparing a proper routine. It's also really fun. I got this 7min routine in my set right now where I just blast though about 20 funk songs and sugarhil shit that I've remixed with phat bass and new drums. The most fun is performing it and doing all the scratching.

    • @adonis2418
      @adonis2418 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Slynk Ill keep that in mind man :) I bet that is nice for freeing up some time to let lose on some scratching.

      @Slynk  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope.

    • @adonis2418
      @adonis2418 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unless your mixing very melody heavy music, it really doesn’t matter. Mixing in key everytime is overrated in most cases. Use your ear. If it sounds like shit don’t play it. Many of the best DJs in the world are on vinyl and don’t pay an ounce of attention to each individual songs key.

    • @Slynk
      @Slynk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it's ignorant to completely ignore harmonic mixing. But at the same time, you don't always need to stick to mixing perfectly in key. And in some cases, it can become boring if you stay on the same key too long. Contrast is good sometimes. And sure, some music is more a tonal. Understand harmonic mixing and use it in whatever artistic way you see fit.

    • @adonis2418
      @adonis2418 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Slynk I'm not saying to ignore the melodies you hear but literally keeping track of every key in my experience has occasionally been detrimental to my mixes. If you are cueing things before hand, you should be able to tell if the combination sounds bad. Also when mixing melodically we must discuss the types of cuts and transitions being used. In my experience, hard cuts often require less attention to melody. For example, if a rapper spits his last bar of an 8 bar flow and the beat or melody stops on that bar. That opens up an opportunity to hard cut to another song once that bar is spit, without the melody of what you're mixing into clashing with the previous melody. However, in cases where you're layering songs for an extended period of time, a melodic sync becomes much more important. Nothing wrong with using a software for that but don't underestimate the ability of your ear to decipher between good/clashing melodies. (Training your ear takes time of course but when your Slynk I'm sure your ears are plenty trained already haha.) Sorry for the extended reply

      @andreaschristou251 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slynk I create mixes in ableton in the studio but really want to translate that to love djing. I love the way ableton warps tracks and automatically beat matches and syncs allowing me to get on with more creative stuff. Does Serato have this type of warping and beat syncing?

    3:20 the app "lost track of things" - so it actually doesn't detect the key? ;)

    • @Slynk
      @Slynk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think you understand. The loop has multiple different chords within it. Each chord has multiple notes within it. So when I play the whole loop, the software is detecting the notes within multiple chords. I continue my example by only playing part of the loop so that the software can detect only the notes within a single chord.

    Slynk! Big fan of your work man. Your tutorials really help me expand my knowledge about music production and just music in general. You explain things really well and in a way that is easily digested by novices like myself. I was wondering, are you open to critiquing (from a producer's standpoint/point of view) works of other producers? Take a song of mine for example, would you be able to pinpoint where I fall short, what things I can improve on, is it better if I mixed/mastered it this way rather than that way, etc.
    I've linked a song of mine below. If you'r against this kind of stuff then just feel free to delete my comment, no hard feelings lol.
