The problem with Mike's Superman/Superheroes theory is that Ben Affleck and Christian Bale already had successful careers or at least well known roles (Good Will Hunting and American Psycho respectively). Michael Keaton with Beetlejuice before he played Batman. Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Dean Cain had bit roles before becoming Superman
Checked out that snake video and it looked kinda fishy to me. After a quick search, it seems these series' use CGI to heighten dramatic effect.
They managed to slide right past without any elaboration, but I definitely caught Mike's contribution about deaths by horse with "well, that's not the worst..." and instinctively thought of "Mr. Hands"
