- Hi, I'm Lauren and welcome to my channel, Whims and Honey Knits!
In this video I am sharing 20 things as a self-taught knitter that I wish I had known to help me improve earlier on in my knitting journey! I hope it helps you in your knitting journey and thank you for watching!
Leave a comment of what you found helpful or if there is something you're wanting to learn or better understand that I didn't include! I may make another video covering things I missed in this video :)
Below is a time stamp of the tips I share so you can find them as you need as well as links to patterns, yarn, knitting tools and more that I mention and recommend throughout the video!
***Clarification: in tip 3, depending on region and language there can be debate on what yarn display varieties are called - the first (cream) yarn is a “Skein” of yarn the second (yellow) yarn (more commonly in the US) is called a “Hank” of yarn and the very last (marled) yarn is a “Cake” of yarn.

This is a great video and I love the tip on just "Get Started", practice and be consistent! Keep these videos coming! ;)
@@PURSCAN thank you so much!! 🥰❤️
Love the idea about knitting baby sweaters first thank you
@@josdantas9739 thank you for watching and I’m glad that was a helpful idea for you, it has definitely helped me learn different parts of knitting a bit more quickly :)
I normally make my socks cuff down. At Christmas I had yarn that I wanted to use as much as possible so I followed a toe up pattern with afterthought heel. Picking up those stitches for the heel gave me the courage to drop down several rows on another project to fix a mistake. I doubt I will ever make another toe up sock, but I am grateful for the lesson I learned.
@@melissaemery8686 As frustrating as mistakes can be, I do also feel glad for what they have taught me. With each project, especially the more heavily mistaken ridden ones, I usually feel like a more confident knitter for overcoming the mistakes. Thanks for sharing your experience and for watching 🙂
Amazing tips! I totally agree, reading my knitting helped me so much in improving and the crochet hook tip is a game changer! Thanks for sharing ❤️
@@Cococables thank you so much for watching! Yes the crochet hook makes life easier ☺️☺️
Thank you for the tips!😊
@@The-Vintage-Needlecrafter thanks so much for watching! 💕
Great video!
@@Drew_Warner thank you! 😊
Love this! Thanks for sharing, Lauren! Even after knitting for a couple years, I never thought to get knitting books from the library, such a good idea. Great encouragement at the end too 🥰
@@Knitsandstitchess thank you so much for watching and for your sweet comment! Yes the library is where I find so many good resources but especially for knitting 😊
Thank you for the tips - I’ve crocheted for many years but I’m a very new knitter. I am enjoying it a lot but I do find it challenging. I really need to work on reading knit patterns and learn and practice fixing errors ; dropped stitches, ripping back, etc. I look forward to your future videos - I feel like you’re definitely interested in helping us newbie knitters 😊
@@gwensmith7024 thank you so much for watching and I’m so glad you found it helpful!! Those were things that definitely were hard for me and eventually clicked a lot more as a did more patterns that stretched me! I’m excited to share more videos soon, I hope you have a blessed day! 💕
Love this so much Lauren! Thank you for sharing these tips.
@@kennedysack2305 aw thank you so much!! 🥰
This has been so helpful and I love that you put the Bible verse at the end of your clip. Blessings Gail 🙋🏼♀️🇦🇺
@@gailfirenze4760 Thank you, Gail! 😊 And I’m so glad the scripture was an encouragement to you! Blessings to you as well 💕
First here! Excellent tips. Thank you! 🥰❤️🤗 I LOVE that you're a Christian. ✝️🙏💜
Aw thanks so much, Kim!! So glad to have you here, and thank you for your encouragement in my faith! 💗🙌🏻
I hope you have a blessed day!!
The yellow yarn is called a hank. The first yarn you showed is a skein. A ball is yarn that you wind into a ball by hand and is shaped like a true ball.
@@vanessalumbra9409 oh my goodness how did I go all this time have these flip flopped, I don’t know where I first learned it but I have in all my knitting journey thought the hank was a skein of yarn! Thank you for the correction, I will add that to the description to clarify for other viewers!!
@whimsandhoneyknits Lol. I used to work in a yarn shop. That's how I found out. I'm 70, and I'm still learning new things about knitting. .
@@vanessalumbra9409 how fun, I would love to work at a yarn shop sometime in my life :) and yes I agree, I have found there is always more to learn with knitting!
Guys for anyone beginning to knit out there just find drops interchangeable needles. The set is absolutely amazing, is somewhere around £30 if not less. No need to buy something so expensive until you actually know knitting is your life. 🤣🤣❤️
@@Wella_knits thank you for the less expensive suggestion for viewers!! I’ve only ever worked with the Lykke set I own so it’s all I can recommend and it works great, but definitely agree you can get a set that I’m sure works great for less ☺️
@ definitely! I’ve been knitting for 2 years and only now I got “proper needles”. I wish I got them sooner. I knit so much faster and is a lot easier. Thank you for your great advice xx
@@whimsandhoneyknitsdo you have an instagram account? Xx
@@Wella_knitsI totally agree, I didn’t get my interchangeable needles set until about two years into my knitting journey as well! I definitely wished I had them sooner too after realizing how much I enjoy them, but I am guilty of often times picking a hobby and not sticking to it 😅 so I waited until I was really ready to spurge and keep with knitting! Thanks so much for watching and sharing your experience! 💕
@@whimsandhoneyknits ha ha we have that in common. I started crocheting and moved on to knitting so fast. 🤣 but now knowing how serious I am about knitting it was worth it. ❤️ thank you very much and please keep them coming x we absolutely love them. I am a mum just like you with 2 small kids so when I am watching you it really feels as if you are with me in the room. Sounds silly but you have a very nice and calm voice that makes me feel that way. ❤️
What brand is the yellow skein you shared?
@@Knitsandstitchess It’s the brand Manos Del Uruguay and their Serena Yarn in their color 2044 😊
@ thank you! It is beautiful
