  • If you have an m20 powerplant in your old beem, you've probably heard of the stroker conversion! What you'd be unlikely to have heard, is that there are two different kinds of pistons that come in the 2.5i block. Only one type will work, the other would be a sad day...
    When we mention, if you're building this engine use early stuff, we mean in terms of cooling system, early car - two neck water pump, late - single neck.
    The production dates discussed in this video are pertinent only to the U.S Market. Refer to Realoem.com for further info on your market

Thankfully i got lucky and got the right ones without knowing, i wouldve been very sad if it didnt work. I had no idea there are 2 different “I” pistons so for others keep your eye out! Good advice. If you have a good shop you can machine off the skirts from the pre '90 pistons to allow for the rod clearance as well but if you can use the post '90 once so much the better....

    Hi from Finland! I just bought my first e30 cabriolet a few months ago and the engine was badly broken, one of the valves was in the piston. 😅 I haven't ever built any engine but I watched your videos for that head assembly example, and it was very helpful. I have driven it now maybe a month and it works great. The only thing what is bothering me is that the oil light is not working, i have oil pressure gauge there because of that. This Stroker build is very interesting because i have a few blocks, one head, eta crank and better camshaft allready. Hopefully u understood something from my bad english. 😅 Keep up!

    Thanks for the info Will! I never thought about pulling up realoem or looking for a build date to see if there were different part numbers/ updates. I bet there is a TSB # that you could probably look up to verify the newer style pistons as well. I should've known this information and I can't believe that I didn't. I built probably half a dozen of these over the years but it's been quite some time and I always did it the way you have because I never knew. You do a valuable service by helping people decipher what works and what doesn't. Hell I've had these motors apart so many times, but even someone like me could benefit from a 'refresher.' DBO is my favorite channel by far, and definitely the most underrated and entertaining stuff on the interwebz. You planning on making a video with Hamish's m60 swapped e30? Looks cool, and those things are fun with the m60 installed. Even a m60b30 is an upgrade over an NA m20. Can't go wrong with the v8 torque and sound. I had two 540/6 e34's and they were just great daily drivers. I miss them honestly. One of mine had the e32 3.15lsd, ltw flywheel, full mandrel exhaust with a Magnaflow/ cat delete, e60 545i 'short version' shift lever, poly motor/ trans/ suspension bushings, etc. Those mods in my opinion, are the best for the m60 powered cars. Diff, flywheel, shifter, exhaust, mounts, maybe the bigger plenum (b44 or ITB's) are the most noticeable stuff that really improves the enjoyment of that platform. Everything else for the m60 is big money really....
    I'd definitely like to see some video and details on that car. Great work as always!

      Hey Pete! Hamish here, I already have two episodes filmed! Just need the balls to put em out haha, right now it’s an m60b44 with the getrag 420g 6, it’ll be mated to a 2.93 LSD, the shifter is an e46 m3 assembly, fits mint! I’ll try and get that video out this week!

    • @psavel274
      @psavel274 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DENVERBEERANDOIL Hey Hamish!
      Yeah bro, definitely post those please. Love these type of builds. The m60b44 is the best one to go with, and I believe it already has the best flowing intake manifold IIRC. Pretty sure that's the one I threw on mine. You should definitely investigate what other diffs you can use on the e30. I know when I used the e32 3.15 on my e34 it was probably the best upgrade you could do with the 6 speed to get you a nice increase in acceleration. Since it was a 6 speed, the final gear is fairly tall and you won't be at high rpms with the shorter final drive. Only thing you need to do on the e34 to make it work is change the input flange. Otherwise FWIR it bolts right up. Obviously your case is a different size in the e30 but I'm sure someone has figured a different OEM alternative that it will benefit from. All my 2.93 diffs were open which sucked because both my 540/6 had ASC. That setup is a huge buzzkill, and even when its disabled, the intake boot and ASC throttle body is restrictive. BMW has a non-ASC intake boot which is an improvement, or you can make your own out of silicone couplers and a couple small chunks of 3.5" or 4" piping. I'd recommend chipping the DME if you haven't already as well. Hard to go wrong for the $ to pull the speed limiter, raise the rev limit, and add a better fuel and ignition map. There is a guy out there who does custom tunes for the 404 DME. I'm sure he does others if your running a later one, but afaik the 404 is the best one to go with. Check DUDMD on bimmerforums. Hes the guy that burns custom eproms. The lightweight flywheel is an enormous upgrade as the stock dual mass is heavy as hell!!! Pretty sure they're just south of 30 lbs! I had a JB Racing one on mine and what a difference. Also has the JB on my e36 track car and it never let me down in over 15 years of abuse. Some things to ponder for the future if you end up having a couple extra bucks to spend. Get those videos up broseph!!! Excited to see what you've got going on there!!!

    Could you possibly measure the skirt height on the light weight 1990 piston? I’m thinking that with far more of the original variant i piston out there that this issue could simply be overcome with a lathe or mill. We just need to know the skirt height dimension to machine them down to.

I have all the piston, crank and rod options in my garage and I decided on custom pistons because the cost was less than machine work.

I’ve cracked 2 heads in a row now at 15 psi of boost. Tune has very mild timing. The crack is in the water galley and as soon as it pops coolant starts coming up into the valve train. You can see the crack when you take the valve cover off. Never happened on my I motors with the same boost and the same head. Anyway cool vid!

    I've read that running the entire b27 rotating assembly leaves you with a compression ratio of 8.4:1. with late b25 pistons, what does the compression ratio end up at?
    I have a low-boost b25 that smokes and I suspect failing piston rings. Wondering if an entire b27 bottom end is the move, or just crank and rods if I don't want a lower compression ratio losing me low end torque.
