    Russia's Lavra is so damn powerful. It almost becomes a weakness because you end up getting too many artists and musicians with no where to slot their works because you don't have enough theatre squares and you haven't hit the civic for broadcast towers.

    • @TheSaxyGamer
      @TheSaxyGamer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      Haha, one thing that you can do when that happens is sell your existing great works to the AI with the least domestic tourists for gold and then use the extra people to fill those spots back up. This won't really affect your progress towards victory at all and you can at least get something from the extra great people.

    • @beanburrito4405
      @beanburrito4405 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      I personally some of the excess great people as scouts. They’re actually better than scouts; you can set them to auto-explore and if they’re attacked they get transported to your nearest territory. They also have more movement than scouts and can still pick up goody huts

    • @countluke2334
      @countluke2334 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The excess great people can protect tiles. I played against Russia recently and wondered why the AI had about 7 Great People just standing around in the end (I hadn't watched the video before), and I noticed you can't bombard tiles with Great People on them with your bombers or with your artillery / warships. Plus, religious units cannot enter a tile with GP on them - so you can protect your last city from conversion by surrounding it w GP.
      I'm not sure this is intended, but it sure works.
      Anyone else wondering why GP can't be stolen or traded? Wouldn't that be great?

      That happened to me one game, and because of how big the cities are when you settle I got trapped into building tall rather than wide and I didn't have enough museums to activate all my great artists and musicians.

    I once played accurate start Earth with Russia, I was America so it was late before I met them, and I looked and saw they literally had 50% of their hexes covered in artists and missionaries they couldn’t use. The AI was practically giving away great works just to use up their artists. It was kinda terrifying.

    This is quite late, but I have to mention this. The Lavra territory expansion bonus is actually quite great. Remember that you get extra great ARTIST points, and they are used three times each. And yes, every time you use them, one extra tile. Writer and musician just two times indeed. Also, some great merchants and engineers have multiple uses. Just remember the main problem. Tile ownership might get messed up, and newer cities won't use some tiles unless you swap those for them, if a nearby city expanded over it's area.

    You should really mention the spawn bias for tundra is super strong with the pantheon that gives faith adjacency and faith purchasing. With the cheap lavra you can just get +6 - +8 faith per turn and lavra and then just spam units. If you manage to get warrior monks then you don't even have to wait for anything else. Warrior monks and horsemen are strong at pushing and then you just keep rolling.

    Really nice. Can you make a video about what wonders to get or prioritise while going for every victory types keeping in mind the higher difficulty type (Diety) as it's not so easy to get earlier wonders on Diety.

    CPL players taught me the importance of faith as a currency. It buys you settlers, workers, soldiers, walls, science/cultural buildings, it's cheaper to purchase them than gold and unhindered by upkeep. Faith is so overpowered right now I actually ban Russia in my multiplayer games because of its easy access to it.

  • @MrTNA-ml8tt
    @MrTNA-ml8tt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    For 2-3 years i thought Russia is the best civ in the game because Lavra is OP and you get so many artists, writers and musicians which will give you so much money, not to mention if you have commercial hubs and be the owner of Jakarta as a city state that when you get to Theocracy you won the game cause you can buy so many cossacks with religion and easily destroy the opponents. Even now Russia is in contention for the best civ with Sumeria, Scytia, Germany and Egypt but i will give the edge a little to Aztecs over every Civ

    • @thomasdebuch3046
      @thomasdebuch3046 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn’t say Egypt is a contender for being the best civ. Their bonuses aren’t very strong and they are quite situational, except for the Sphinx.

    Grand embassy is NOT an OK ability, it's a bad ability which you won't even use. Let's imagine you have 10 trade routes going exclusively to other civs. Let's assume they are ahead of you. You only get 10 science...That's terrible, like really not good

    • @SingingSpock
      @SingingSpock 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      NKLA2222 you're missing that 1) this is on top of other resources and 2) this is for every three technologies they're ahead of you. Find the best science and culture civs in your game, trade with them a bunch for 2-4 science/culture plus other yields each route

    • @NikolaRJK1
      @NikolaRJK1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      except you can't beat domestic routes for the 4 gold policy card and late game + 4 food. And then when do you manage to keep up in science with them , the bonus is non existent. It's a good bonus if you compare it with no bonus at all. I mean, I get that if he had some insane ability, Russia would be OP, so he is kinda nerfed. The only time this is viable is in the very early game where 3-4 science per turn makes a difference.

    • @korayven9255
      @korayven9255 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is entirely correct in that the Grand Embassy does not show its worth in the late game. The thing about 4X games is though is that most of the game can be determined within the first few hundred turns (depending on speed). The word snowball is used a few times in the video and for good reason: a small advantage at the start of the game has cumulative, sometimes massively so, effects on the late game. 3-4 science per turn in the early game might not seem like much but you're thinking of that in absolute terms. The better question is, what *percentage* is that of your early science output? Moreover, Triangle Trade is a midgame policy that should not be compared to the early game utility of Grand Embassy. The more appropriate comparison is to Caravansaries (+2 per trade route). All in all, it doesn't seem that great outside of helping you out of a hole but for the greater period of most competitive games, you're gonna be in a hole of some kind to start with.

    • @NikolaRJK1
      @NikolaRJK1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but any ability that is inverse i.e. you get bonus for being bad is, well bad. You can't allow yourself to be behind in tech in early game at all. You want to rush the districts, archers, knights. So in order to use it you need to be behind. And also no war as your traders are always pillaged.

    • @korayven9255
      @korayven9255 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are basically two kinds of good abilities: 'win more' or 'lose less'. If it does either of these things competently, it's a good ability. Grand Embassy is firmly in the latter category, letting you focus on other things in the early game without compromising on your game plan. You're thinking of being behind as firmly a fault of the player rather than a reasonable consequence of a competitive game. If you're so far ahead that you're not getting anything from it, then you've more or less have the game on lock at that point.
