I used to shoot a Ruger M77 in .338 Mag, it really liked the 225 grain Nosler Partition over a stout charge of IMR 4350, reaching 2800 fps. It wasn't much fun to shoot off the bench, but you don't really notice the recoil in the field. I ended up selling the rifle to a friend who was moving to Alaska, where the .338 is a favorite round for big snarly critters.

I got a bunch of seconds from nosler and loaded up partitions and accubonds in different weights. For my xbolt the best groups were from the 225gr partition. That surprised me!
The M77 is known for lite trigger strikes. I bought one anyway. Guess what...sometimes the gun would not fire because of lite trigger strikes. Took it to a gunsmith. He "fixed" it. Took it hunting...problem re-occurred. Sold it and never looked back again at the M77. I have no use for guns that only sometimes fire when the trigger is pulled. Enjoy your dangerous game hunt with the M77...it could get exciting real quick!
I shoot a Howa 1500 in .338 Win Mag. It’s hands down my favorite mag rifle, and probably the most versatile magnum caliber for someone who’s a reloader. I can get below 1/2 MOA at 100 yards. Great Caliber! Don’t let anyone tell you it’s overkill
I spent my weekend at a gun show. I picked up 2.5 pounds of winchester 748 powder for my .358 win and I picked up some Barnes 185gr bullets for my .338 win mag and I also picked up an older Leupold VX-ll 3-9x40 scope with a set of rings. I also found some 150gr Barnes .338 bullets, I never knew anybody made bullets that light in .338 caliber.
Most accurate rifle I ever owned, was a Rem 700 stainless in a beautiful walnut stock. In 338 Win Mag. Took it to Colorado on a Muley,Elk hunt. Never saw an Elk but tagged a nice 4x4 Muley.
I had a Remington 700 left handed bolt action after a destroyed in a fire I can never find another one I dropped my first elk at 400 yd was a beautiful rifle
I bought my .338 in 1998. Winchester model 70 w boss. Had to do a lot of tuning to make it shoot accurately. Killed a big bull Elk w it in 2002. It’s a fine rifle and packs a punch for big game. Kills very efficiently.
Excellent Job. 20-some years guiding in Alaska, the .338 Model 700 Remington was my go-to-rifle. Shot a 225-grain bullet, dozen of bears, moose, mountain goats, and deer etc. My furthest shot was 469-yards on a mountain goat, 1-shot, DOA. Alaska was unpredictable what lurked ahead of you deep into the mountains. Years carrying that .338 caliber gave me complete confidence on all forms of harvesting wildlife. Thank You...

Nick, I purchased a Remington Model 700 “Alaska’s Wilderness Rifle 24” barrel in 1998, no modification’s where made except a Timney Triggger. It’s been a shooter, I like the .338-caliber, don’t think there is popular as the 300-Mag. Both are excellent choices, yet, my .338 is staying with me, yes, well worth the extra-cost…

One of my favorites as well. I've only tried 3 factory loaded rounds in mine, but it's liked all 3. Winchester 200 gr Power Points, Winchester 230 gr Black Talons (not made anymore), and Federal 210 gr Nosler Partitions. I handloaded for it now with the 210 gr Partitions and 225 gr Hornady soft points.

338 Win Mag in the late 80's.
I'll shoot over 100 rounds of 45-70 and 12 ga slug in a day, but only about 10 of those bruisers and my shoulder is done.
Mine is a Ruger M77 in 338Win Mag; shot my first deer with this using Winchester 200 grain Power Point bullet. That was over 20years ago and the rifle now has a custom muzzle brake installed which makes bench time more enjoyable. My Ruger really likes the Federal Premium 210 grain Nosler Partition rounds and will shoot sub-MOA 90% of the time.
Never really been crazy about the 338 cartridges, but nowadays I found myself wanting a 338 Win Mag. Heard great things about it and this video encourages me a bit more. Great video as always Who Tee Who!
Wonderful video! I also enjoy the 338 WM in my Ruger 77. Favorite for sure and will do anything a rifle is needed to do. Great round! Your rifle/scope combo is a nice one.
I was told that Crimson Trace uses the Monarch glass in all of their scopes. Very crisp and clear.
The load I worked up for my elk hunt was with Winchester brass, federal magnum primer, Speer grand slam 250 gr, and enough IMR 4831 to give me 2700 FPS. The trajectory was almost identical to my favorite 30-06 hand load with a 180 bullet.

I bought a Compass II in 6.5 Creedmoor during that same sale from KGC. The trigger is better than my Ruger American. Love the 3 position Model 70 style safety with the bolt lock. BTW, I'm getting 5/16 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards with Hornady Precision Hunter ammo. I love the gun. Super value, and it shoots like a laser. Your gun should shoot better with ammo it likes.
I got myself a Ruger No.1 chambered in .338 Win.Mag. many years ago. A really elegant hard hitting rifle. I bagged my first moose bull with it..
Never handled or shot a 338wm, but have read a lot on its capabilities. Definitely hammered the piggy. Would be a great elk or bear cartridge. Thanks for sharing!
Good for about anything you want to want to hunt.
I grabbed the same one when they were $250. For the price, it's not a bad rifle at all. I haven't hand loaded for it yet, but with regular off the shelf winchester hunting loads, the best groups I could get were 2-3". Considering it also has a pencil barrel, that's about the best I figure I can squeeze out of it.
That’s exactly why I reload/hand load. As you work up your load (additional grains of powder, type of powder, bullet weight etc. etc. you figure out what that rifle likes best. I have a couple hundred rds loaded for each of my rifles. No way you can replicate the accuracy that you enjoy with that continuity vs random different factory loads. Basically you should re-zero your scope every time you switch anything. And what Who Tee said about that rifle not liking that ammo is more of a thing than most people understand or appreciate!
Thanks for the video buddy. I asked a while ago about this. I have wanted the 338 for awhile I currently have 3 compass 2, 300 win mag, 30-06 and 308. I have let clients use them here in Maine for moose and everyone loves them. Keep up the videos 🇺🇸

You’re not kidding about .338 Win Mag ammo availability. I lucked out and found some Nosler Trophy Grade with 250gr Accubond (which I consider an excellent premium bullet) last year for $49/box at a backcountry store. Haven’t seen any since 😂

Love the vids. You need a front rest that doesn't move like ones we use in benchrest. They are Salty but only need buy it once.
And rear bag for shorter weight rifles.
You'll get more consistent results especially when shooting big boomers.

I hunt with a BAR in 338 win mag and I love it. You ain't kidding about the ammo, I bought 2 boxes of federal fusion at the beginning of this ammo crisis and was lucky enough to get two boxes of Winchester ammo recently. It's not available for purchase online anywhere, not just backordered, simply not available to purchase.
I own a 338 myself and what I do when sighting in after laser bore sight is shoot first shot, then i keep rifle still in my Caldwell bench rest ,keeping crosshairs on same spot i was aiming at and rotate turrets to the first bullet hole...done in 2 shots ? Maybe 3 shots.Yes 338 is pricey...a little tip from a 🇨🇦..

I've got several 338s. A Ruger #1 with Federal premiums did a 3/4 inch group at 300 yds. I thought I had missed the target on the second and third shots but a close-up confirms the three rounds were touching each other and the first and second rounds were nearly undetectable. I even took a photo. The 338 has taken many elk, caribou, moose, and a bear. I reload and found that slowing down a heavier bullet it cleanly takes a whitetail without tearing the animal up. Very versatile cartridge and obviously my favorite.
Love my 338.... only caliber i used for 30 years. Elk moose deer bear it unwinds their main springs really quick never have to go tracking nothing. Pull the trigger and meat in the freezer😁
When I was in high school, one of my hunting friends got a new M700 in .338. Wanting to be the true he-men of our generation shooting a big magnum, we took it out to the hayfield to zero the new Weaver V9W scope mounted on top.
First shot out of the box the recoil was so hard that the V9 eyepiece came back into my friends eyebrow leaving a nice little cut that bled profusely. He didn’t shoot it any more that day.
A week later, he mustered enough courage to try it again. This time the scab over his cut got knocked off and again, the blood flew everywhere.
He never shot it again, and I bought it from him later at a nice discounted price because he was afraid of it. It was a fine deer rifle after that, especially after I backed the eye relief off a bit more on the Weaver……..LOL!!

Those Weaver’s have a knife edge eye piece. Your friend is one of many victims. Nowadays we have muzzle brakes.

Leupold used to sharpen the ocular end so it would make a clean cut !

I have a Viking arms 1900 in .338 Win Mag. Love the rifle. Cross between a laser and howitzer. 185 barnes ttsx for deer and 225 barnes ttsx for elk and moose. Northern Alberta.
I had a Rem 700 in 338 WM that wouldn't shoot worth a crap so I sold it. I always liked the cartridge though. These days I shoot a 338-378 Weatherby and often find myself missing the reduced recoil and economical reloads of the Win Mag. It's pretty much the perfect elk cartridge for inside 500 yards.
Should always just take 3 careful shots before you adjust anything. Need a tight group before adjusting.
I agree, that barrel doesn’t like that Ammo. Curious to see what ammo works for you, and how much the group tightens up.
I have a hunch it will tighten up with 250 grainers.

Now I think I understand why my best friend traded his Ruger M77 in .338 Win Mag for a 7mm Magnum. Three high end scopes, including a Nickon, and various factory and hand loads never seemed to work for him though he did love the rifle for its quality. The 7mm Mag has proven to be deer and hog killing fool out to around five hundred yards or so.
Great cartridge. You might want to put some lead down field....^) I never like the group with the copperheads. If you Re-load, you might try the 225 Nosler....got much improved group.....Thanks for the vid and also the heads up on the Axil Ears....gonna get some....^)

1990 first year Win Supergrades became available again. Coming back from Desert Shield/Desert Storm my wife presented me one in 338 Win Mag. Shoots everything well from 200 Nosler BTs to 250 Partitions. Doesn't really kick ... it pushes/shoves, my Featherweight 270 kicks harder.
Shot mine last weekend with my brother. Ruger Mark 2 with skeleton stock. Love it. I call it the annihilater.

I agree, looks like two three shots groups ,first one around 6inch?(learning how to hold that beast again?)second group gripped the rifle little more and groups tightened up????in my opinion.never shot 338,but love my 300wm
If you can find the Winchester in the black box it shoots I think it's 200 gr. Bullets look like black coated ballistic tip loaded on nickel coated brass that was the best shooting ammo I tried couldn't beat it with my reloads

Love my .338 win mag. Browning Abolt Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. I recently put a Burris Fullfield 4 on it. While Use Hornady 230 ELDX I've been getting. 95 in groups. Best gun I have.
I bought a new Mossberg Patriot in 375 Ruger for $290, cerakoted stainless steel barrel and, although the recoil is stout, it's accurate as can be. Haven't taken anything with it yet but I will this year!! I know you feel about the 338 the same way I do about the 375.
I also purchased a Mossberg Patriot like yours in 375 Ruger would really like the gun if it would shoot a descend group. Mine shoots 3 shots into a 3" to 4" group at a 100 yards. I called Mossberg about this gun and they said that it was acceptable groups. I will never use a rifle on game that shoots that lousy. I think buying a Mossberg rifle is a gamble on getting a good one or a lousy one. I will never buy one again.
Have had good luck with Barnes ttsx. Non lead bullets I use in reloads for my 300 wby mag and my 6.5 CM. Never fired a 338 win so I cannot speak to what they do in that chambering. Just my two cents. Now I want one.
Have som 70s 338w favorite. Lighter to.load it down 4 lower states .bigger on top. Found i needed dual dove tail mounts. Front mount should have horizontal bridge Gainst front of receiver 180/ 250 don't shoot prone whith out sisy pack

338 win mag is a great cartridge, I prefer my Sako TRG M10 in 338 Lapua for long range hunting.
I was die hard Nikon guy. 95% of my rifles have Nikon. I tried Vortex there ok. I really like Leapold. Ill have to try Crimson Trace.
I would agree that the accuracy is lacking and no where near acceptable for 100 yards.
I would also say if this was a 12 guage and you made that same group at 100 yards with a slug, noone would complain and would actually be impressed.
I saw 2 bullets in one hole so I'm thinking it was all the turret twisting he was doing .Unless action screws are a bit loose.
Iv got a HOWA 1500 In 338 WIN MAG it's my favorite rifle. I use it hunting here in Australia and it will make pretty much anything stop in it's tracks with a single round
Ps. Hand load rounds for it and mess with projectiles, powder charges and projectile seating depth and you'll get groups better than any factory ammo. It just depends what your rifle likes to run
Great video mate. On the other one i saw alot of comments on how this calibre will break cheep scopes which you do not agree with. You actually like the cheep ones. May i ask what you believe is cheep as that scope is $1700 big ones in Australia. Cheers mate especially loving the 243 stuff as its my first rifle
I can see where people hunting really big animals would want that caliber but as a deer hunter (whitetails & mule deer ) I've never had a problem taking them with 30 06 or 308 my two favorite calibers. The most accurate rifle I've ever had is my browning x bolt hunter in 308. That 338 is a beast though 👍👍.

Barnes Bullets have always been great for me but your right about them coppers there.

I had a 7mm rem mag and couldn’t get it to group with anything but the heaviest bullet weights loaded long I’d check the throat before wasting a bunch of rounds

Coppers never seam to be accurate for me but they kill pretty good. I like the Barnes copper ammo but definitely doesn’t shoot better than an inch out of any rifle I’ve ever tried it in.

You may already know this. But due to the cost of ammo these days. Bore sight your rifle. Fire first shot at bull. Re aim at bull. Then dial your scope to first shot. Then adjust bench rest back to bull. Just a suggestion keep up the great videos.

I had that in a Ruger 77 , 3.5 -10 Leupold varyX 3, Liked it Fine, that is popular in Alaska, plenty of power, shoots far Those Ultra Mags l didn't get it , Punishment to shoot, not necessary, The cartridges that have been around work fine, Remember that Ultra Mag you picked up, that thing hurt to shoot
My 2 are .243 Winchester and the .308 . You can do some long range shooting with both but the .308 will take any large game in North America and you can buy surplus ammo for the .308 . The .243 will take Deer ,Hogs and any varrment at long range . I have used the .243 for Deer , Hogs , Coyotes , and whatever was eating my chickens . I know over kill for coons and skunks but when you go outside not knowing what to expect I picked the .243 because one time hogs were rutting up my garden and I only had a .22lr. bolt action at night . The .243 would take a 500 lbs. hog with poor shot placement and the .22 lr would not .

is my caliber of choice for wood bison .... i have a Savage bolt action and mainly use it at close range at a bison operation where I serve as a veterinarian...however...
All animals are tranquilized by dart gun first so a shot behind the ear is done on recumbent animals ...some of which are larger than moose ( up to 2500 lbs ) ... normally...
I dont recommend long distance head shots in hunting situations...even with this powerful ordinance ...(if it can be avoided.) These animals have large bony skulls which can absorb energy in large sinuses. Relatively large skull compared to brain...( brain location is deceiving and is easily missed) Behind the shoulder
is a better proposition...

My old neighbour 70 years old owns a mauser chambered in 338wm. He shot a wildbore ranged 175 meters (191 ). Allomst no drop. Really impressed!

Your howitzer got better with a hotter barrel. But what do you need that thing FOR ? How many fp recoil at what speed with that $$$ ammo ?Try a 338 federal ! Also , how useless is the miniature field of view at 20x ? As in in the field ?

My two favorite are; .204 Ruger & .338 Lapua Magnum.
I did notice that CT is using the same reticle design that the Nikon BDC scopes had.
All copper bullet is always longer bullet than lead core of same weight cause copper is less dense than lead. often time they need faster twist barrel than whats norm for caliber. You may have copper bullet shoot well just have to go lighter in weight to match length of lead core bullet. Many bolt action rifles come with twist intended only for lead core.
I shot a savage chambered in the 338 it kicked like a mule but out to 300 it was a tac driver
400 yard tack driver with250gr. Hornady rounds you hit it goes down I use to hunt big deer in extreme northern Wisconsin even my friend switched we both have problems walking long distance so having to track a animal is not in the cards rounds hit with 5 shot .75 spread at 250 yards doesn't leave a big jelly mess a out a 4 inch hole on a broad side extremely destructive on head shot not much left if hit in head.
I was wondering if you shot the rifle as is, or did you add any weight to the Butt stock to absorb some of the recoil. I’ve seen a couple guys fill there hollow stocks.

I have one that I inherited from my brother. It is a Ruger M77MKII All Weather. I have not fired it or hunted with it. This is a heavy duty caliber. This is for large game like elk, moose, brown bear. I live in Florida and this is way more rifle than I need. I thought I might use it if I got out west on an elk hunt.

@@linescum444 My brothers live in AK and they use 30-06 or 45-70 for moose. My brother did take a grizzly with 338 Ruger. He hit that grizz twice and it ran into thick willow brush. Talk about scary.... walking into thick willows after a grizzly bear. He found it in the thick brush dead. This was way out in the middle of nowhere at a gold mine. Those interior grizzly bears are always hungry and on the prowl for food. More than once they came into camp. In the morning you put on your pants boots and your gun. In that order. lol
Hey who tee you said you've never had copper ammo do well, have you tried Winchester deer season XP in your 308? Don't you have a Ruger American in 308? You should try it. I just did in my savage axis and it was the best out of anything I've tried so far copper or lead! Also recovered a bullet and it had great expansion and held all it's mass so I finally found my hunting round.

Great show , lots of Fun. Maybe it's bullet jump? In other words bullet SEATING DEPTH FOR YOUR CHAMBER. DO a lands engagement test and then compare to your CARTRIDGE OVERALL LENGTH, BEING USED. Till you know your chamber, You can try many makers and different grains and still not find what works in perfect rifle. Thanks for another fun show.
