You’ll knock it out of the park mate. I turned 50 last year and just finished riding 1350km solo around Taiwan…my endurance engine at this age is far better than when I was younger.
Best of luck with your 2023 challenge Niall! I hadn't heard of Audax before - it sounds pretty hardcore, great there are such challenges for those that are interested. I have a 50th birthday coming up a month after you but I doubt I'll be challenging myself too much in 2023!! 😉 Best of luck with your build up - the road begins!!
What a day. Good luck with the training. . That's an awesome schedule of events ahead .. It's not a crisis , endurance is much more suited to the older body and brain . Knowing you have to put in the work to build the proper type of muscle fibres . There's no fast way to do that but you will do it . #determination I just got my bloods done and an ecg on Friday . I've a tip for you , swimming underwater , anaerobic fitness . But you prob know this already .
Thanks 👍 🙂 I've always found the long distance riding is as much mental as physical. Swimming is great complementary training for cycling but I never learned 🙈
Niall I will follow you gladly from my sofa and watch your progress with interest. It looks a daunting challenge but I'm sure your well able for it .Stay safe and injury free in 2023.
Just come across this lovely video. Good luck with your goals. Great cycling countryside to keepyou inspired. FWIW, im 62 and havw had more comebacks than Elvis😂
Hardcore mate, that is some challenge, very impressive! Looking forward to seeing the updates on your journey this year, looks like you are off to a great start! All the best!
More power to you! During COVID I quit my long term training in fencing and I have noticed a marked decrease in condition since. Also, I feel that my mental state is not as strong as when I was training 3 times a week. So, your video is inspiring me to get off my arse and get back to it. ☺️
Sounds like a good plan into which you've put a lot of thought. The longer distance targets are very daunting in isolation but you're taking a solid stepwise approach. I returned to the bike last year after an eight year lay-off and it's important to build in the way you're describing and feel comfortable with different expectations. Subscribed and I'll be following with interest.
Hi Niall. Best of luck with your challenge for the year. Your very energetic 🥵hope you have a good soft saddle on that bike, nice to have a goal/challenge, something to aim for. Best of luck with it. 👍
Unfortunately not 😔 Put way too much pressure on myself and ended up getting sick of the bike at the end of April and only just got back to it in the last couple of weeks. Back to the very beginning too, trying to build a basic fitness with a 20km easy loop 🙈
The Four Provinces is a great little bit of bling. It's a real buzz at the end, just to reflect back at how wonderful our Island is.
It's a great challenge. Just 4 rides but, as you say, it takes you all over. Harder than you would think especially when based in Donegal 🤣

Wow! That's some achievement 👏👏👏 My engine needs an overhaul at this stage 🙈
Good work
