In the last video I bought a textbook example of an overpriced MacBook listing from a shady eBay seller to demonstrate what low quality and overpriced laptops they sell, but it didn't go as planned. I was sent a late 2013 MacBook Pro, leaving me with more questions than answers. In today's video we'll answer those questions by buying another MacBook from the same exact listing but ship it to a friend to see how a normal eBay shopper would be treated...

      3 possibilities I see:
      1. Knows it’s a TH-camr so fluffed the sale so then possibility that would get recommended (I say unlikely)
      2. Someone grabbed the wrong pre-packed box or switched labels by mistake. (Most likely) as someone who used to sell on eBay this has happened to me I no longer pre-pack boxes.
      3. Technique I heard happens, occasionally randomly “fluffing” sales by upgrading users to higher spec machines. Do this hoping someone makes a second purchase (which will atleast break even) or blindly recommends it on reddit and social media and they see a flood of sales.
Bonus 4th: someone may not known the difference, maybe new person being trained didn’t know better or was being rushed. This again happened to me back when I was a regular seller and had seasonal high volume sales, hire help on it seems easy enough even had things stacked and labeled but was always a few that got mixed up.

Yeah I was scammed by one of these eBay sellers. I wanted a cheap MacBook to use for classes and watch movies on. So I found a 2015 MacBook Pro saying it was upgraded, yada yada, I even got the same navy case, it looked nice and flawless too.
But, I had to sell it on offerup bc it wouldn’t even read my iPhone X or wouldn’t update to a newer version of software. 😭
But, 1 year later and I recently bought a 2020 MacBook air for about the same as what I paid for that old macbook 😙 I think because I bought off an actual persons eBay account they were more honest in messaging.
I had to research before buying, compare them to other listings, look at current Mac’s & older models to see what would work best, asked questions from the sellers, looked at ratings, what they are selling, where they were located, looked/zoomed at the pics, viewed the description etc. 🥴 definitely take your time and research before you buy!

Interesting. I think you should have (without telling anyone) ordered ANOTHER one to your address with your exact name/details just to make sure the first one wasn't a fluke. It could have been some new factory worker who mixed up your order or it could have been someone intentionally thinking you making a video on the mistake would drive people to buy from them thinking they would benefit from the same mistake. If you had ordered another one secretly and gotten another good computer that was better than what you expected - you would know that it was no fluke - that someone was trying to use you to scam your viewers. If your second one sent to your home would have been the same as the one sent to your friend then you would know you just benefited from someone's careless mistake.

Thank you Luke for this great review. I was looking at this seller but now no way. Believe it or not my Macbook Pro is a late 2008, and I bought it use! It still works for what I do on it, except for 3 things, the screen is now separating from the body, running on 5 minutes of battery plugged in always and lastly I need to upgrade my browser. I'm not experienced enough to do any kind of updates or repairs so my only option is a newer one. I'm thinking of a 2013 13" so I just want to thank you again for exposing this seller although I have done enough research that I kinda figured this was the case with this seller and I believe several more on Ebay! I'm gonna keep looking thank you again.

My MacBook pro is a 13 inch mid-2010 with the faster 2.66ghz cpu. It was upgraded with 8gb of ram and a 128gb SSD and it’s in pretty nice shape. It has also been upgraded to MacOS Mojave using Dosdude1’s patcher. I recently ordered a 500gb SSD to put into it as I want to put windows on it as well.

@Ricky Bennett tenfourfox is PPC only and is no longer supported. The best browsers for older intel macs I’ve found are Spiderweb, Arctic fox, and Waterfox classic if running 10.7 or newer.

I'm guessing it isn't anyway if i'm wrong my apologies.
But the "scammer" that you bought the macs from would NOT have your credit card number from ebay
Ebay doesn't GIve your credit card number to them so how could they get your number..Ebay takes out your money and gives it to them
So..just to advertise the sponsor Maybe... Am i missing something, ebay never gives your credit card number to strangers! That would be CHAOS

I bought a late 2013 MacBook Air 13" from a guy advertising it on Facebook Marketplace a couple of years ago. He was selling it because he couldn't get the OS to run, so he was running it from a Sandisk dongle. The MBA cost me £200, but after taking it to a Mac Repair shop, it cost me another £150. There were minor scratches on the body, but I wasn't too troubled by that.
When I looked on About this Mac, it turns out that it was a custom build model because the model according to EveryMac specs said it was normally shipped with an i5 core and 4Gb of RAM. My model is an 1.7Ghz Intel Core i7 with 8Gb RAM. SO, it has an i7 chip and maxed out on memory. I'm not too disappointed that it's running High Sierra because it allows me to run my equally old Canon printer which won't run on any OS higher than High Sierra, so anything I want to print, I have to AirDrop to the MBA from my equally old iMac running Mojave. It will accept Catalina, but I'm reasonably happy with Mojave.

Seller just put your label on the wrong pkg the 1st time. One in a thousand odds.
Your 1st purchase probably went to the person that bought the retina that you received.
Me - if both customers had plenty of 100% feedback, I'd send you both labels addressed to each other & ask u to swap(super risky).
But they'll probably just exchange the other customer's after they complain & eat the loss on yours from the difference in price.

What I find a bit odd is when I’m searching for “Whitman-technologies” and “ebay” on google I don’t see any serious complaints and on their profile there are about 1260 positive reviews during the last 12 months and no negative ones. Could these reviews somehow be manipulated or do their customers have very little technical knowledge so they wouldn’t have noticed they got scammed?

I bought a MacBook from the place you got yours from. They are located about an hour and a half from me. Anyway, they sent me the first one and it was defective. It was a 2011 and that's what I was buying. Then they sent me a different one to replace that one and it was a 2015 retina. No extra charge. Still using it today. I suppose anyone could have a bad day and if you had contacted the seller, I think you could probably get a replacement to match what you wanted or better.

There is no surprise pricing, the price is there in bold print. If someone wants to pay it, its their money. And, whether its a 200 gb, 4 gig ram for 500 bucks, or a 500gh 8 gig ram for 500, If they are not even utilizing the 200gb and the 4 gb space, its all mute point to talk them into the higher specs.

I think your missing the obvious here, you keep saying computers that cost the same. It’s blatantly obvious that the scammers mistakenly sent you the wrong computer in the first instance. More fool them, you got a half decent deal. You should have compared the first computer you received and explored wether it was worth what they were listing for that model.

Try ordering another one to your name you ordered the first one on and see if you get a better pc than what you paid for again.. i bet you dont.. big companies and repair resale wholesale distribution entities dont give two dicks about you, never heard of you, dont look at any ebay rank or whatever they literally just have a branch office and warehouses that receive these big shipments and separate out working/ non working and usable/ non usable and damaged stuff. Then piece back together what they have not giving a shit what goes where or speeds/ value of unit or parts, they just care about looks/ cosmetics and if the damn thing boots up.. then they reship the repurposed loads to the bigger distribution and resale warehouse companies and they have dedicated advertising and sales teams who probably look at the pallet of pc’s as a whole, make and design an ad or listing that looks desirable or hope it looks desirable then ship the shit out. Returning the numbers to the bigger investing companies analytic and revenue processing people who relay to the main big cio’s who check the box of whether to keep using the resalers or not. So the only thing they care about are numbers. Returns and refunds lie on the resalers profit margin so the thought and warranty fine print is their biggest issues.. is why you wont get a lot of this on amazon or a reputable resale megacorporation., ebay is not apart of any resale, only a medium used for resale that has a popular consumer audience..
