    How do they keep the tracks useable when autos pass over them and cover them with snow? How do they keep the overhead wires free of ice? How do they make sure switches work? Looks like a tough grind.

      Answer to your first question: Streetcars usually aren't impeded by snow like this, nor are any other trains, really. It's simply too heavy for it to matter except in incredibly extreme conditions, and I believe at least the modern streetcars have sanders to maintain grip.
      For your second question: The overhead wires are always free of ice except in huge freezing rain winter storms, because of the pantographs/trolley poles scraping the ice off all the time.
      Occasionally, the TTC is forced to send personnel out to clear ice off the wires if it's built up overnight.
      Third question: Switches don't actually "switch", they always stay solid and the way they are. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but I believe the streetcars have some form of mechanism to force the wheels to follow the other track. A button is pressed in the cab to signal the streetcar to follow the diverging track, and through some complicated piece of engineering, the streetcar "steers" itself to follow the diverging track.

    back then, it was terrible, now quebec has the worst winters, and toronto may actually have some of the lightest now.

    Better yet, why does Toronto still use street cars? Why haven't they converted to all bus lines? Quaint?

      Many cities in the US are going back to street cars. They should never have been dismantled.

    • @nickakers7985
      @nickakers7985 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      While most streetcar lines could be served with greater bus frequencies, fixed track systems offer a sense of permanence that doesn’t exist with buses. A bus line can be changed over night at the stroke of a pen, a streetcar, or tram line for our European friends, is usually guaranteed to be there for at least a few decades. As a result of this, developers feel much more comfortable investing in land and development around streetcar lines.

      yep, southern ontario has mostly super cold winters but not a whole lot of snow. Which is unfortunate, because I love snow.
