Nick Nelson is a character I personally don’t see very often. He’s sweet, incredibly caring, emotional and masculine at the same time (which I think is the way most men really are on the inside, but it’s really hard to accept and share with others) and that’s what makes him very special.
The fact that he so humanly (if that’s even a word) comes to terms with his own sexuality and so confidently defends it, it’s amazing. But what it’s even more amazing is how his sexuality is not ALL that he is. Is just the core, or part of it, of who he is: a character that is not only stunningly beautiful in the outside, but outright precious in the inside.
I’m very excited to see how much he develops this new season and how his relationship with other characters, especially Tao, develop. Because, in the end of the day, he’s not just a character for Charlie (and us) to fall in love with, but also a great representation of what is like to grow under a steoreotype and try to overcome that perception and be who you really feel you are.
And as for Kit, he’s incredibly brave for not only being in love with his character, but also defending it even after what part of the fandom has done to him. I hope he really keeps getting good things, as he’s given us so much with Nick Nelson ❤

Thanks for the perceptive and timely look into the “heart throb” mythology and the ways that fans can help rather than harm their heroes.

Everyone would like Nick for a friend...in fact the whole group. Nick, I need a hug.

I really liked how you pointed out the ways that the script tried to make nick seem not "too perfect" by having ben as a foil and struggling with coming out. clever.
I will def be on the lookout for how they go about doing that in the upcoming 3rd season :D

Rather than go looking for a Nick Nelson, be Nick Nelson for somebody else. Easy for me to say because if I'd had the choice between them at that age, I think I would have chosen Charlie rather than Nick.

Thx for this video! Very well done.
I like the ending very much ... I hope people get more concious about the fact that actors or any other celebreties are real humans and that they have a their own lives which they wanna keep private.
I love Heartstopper because the story is told in such a fresh and innocent way ... no sex scenes, just kisses, holding hands, having fun ... no matter of which sex or identity the 2 lovers are. Feelings - that's what counts.
I am very happy that a series like Heartstopper exists nowadays.
    Love has no gender.

Have you had the opportunity to read the web comic? It’d be interesting to see whether/how that affects your analysis.
I really appreciate your analysis. I have some thoughts on how so many of us who identify with Charlie tend to flatten Nick into only a heartthrob. I think there are a lot of viewers/readers who identify with Nick and I think he is actually a full human in the show. Kit’s performance is so nuanced that you can see Nick’s anxieties and fears. He goes on a journey where he relies on Charlie to learn and define who he is, and not just in terms of his bisexuality. Heartstopper starts as a Charlie POV story, but is actually a story about Nick, Charlie, and “Nick and Charlie.” Yes, the cute queer/questioning jock is a trope, but there are a lot of them out there.
I also think that Alice has created Heartstopper to be a model for how interactions can (and in some cases do) go. It’s not that the characters’ reactions are unnatural, but that they are rarely seen in media, one of the main social behavior learning mechanisms.
The blurring of the lines of how viewers see the characters and actors is indeed damaging. I am happy that some entertainers are vocally stating their boundaries. I am glad Kit, Joe, and the others have support systems that keep them grounded and protected from the fame. Would I love a moment of interaction with a cast member? Sure, but it’s more important that they feel safe and respected.

Quick follow up. The reason I ask about the webcomic knowledge is how so many of those moments you mentioned in the first section were pulled and framed from the page. I think these moments explore the archetype but also dig beneath it. Ok. Done now. Again thank you for such a thought provoking piece.

1:35 Let’s remember that the “problem” the US has with teen sexual life is not seen in most of the western countries…

Also, the actors in the us (can’t tell about other countries cause I’m unsure) are generally much much older, like 25 year olds playing 15/16 year olds
