Larry & Joe were destined to make music together.
Larry hails from Monagas, Venezuela and is a legend of Llanera music. Joe is from North Carolina and is a GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime musician. Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. Joe, after a decade in South America, got stranded back in his stomping grounds in the pandemic. Larry works construction to make ends meet. Joe's acclaimed "latingrass" band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus, and he shifted into action working with asylum seeking migrants.
Currently based in the Triangle of North Carolina, both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders. As a duo they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp, banjo, cuatro, fiddle, guitar, maracas and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions as well as storytelling about the ways that music and social movements coalesce.

Really enjoyed the show last evening, thankful that the rain and thunder finally dissipated. Unfortunate that Shay's set had to be cut so short. But amazed at the God given talent you both have and have refined. Fabulous vocals and skilled fingers, along with great stage presence and a humorous tone, though still remarking on the serious subjects of culture and the immigrations issues. Y hablo un poco de Espanol, and I live in Texas, so border music and Latin music are sorta in my gringo blood. I've been listening to Mexican music and American bluegrass and country, wishing and hoping they have a shared lane. And then Larry and Joe show up. I'm very into it, and I hope you are coming to Austin to play.

@@larryandjoe I listen to a lot of indy country and bluegrass and stumbled on Hermano Migrante on Radio Bristol. I only knew the name Joe Troop but hadn't found the music yet. I had been dreaming my love of Latin American music and Spanish would fuse somehow with the American music I love. I watched it many times and posted it for friends, but assumed it was a one time thing til this morning when this video came up for me and I read about your plans. I feel like Joe and I are kindred spirits - Spanish speaking Gringos with a love of American music. I can't wait to hear the whole record and annoy all my friends by raving about it all day. 😀
