    what about just telling them that you are blind instead of being sassy about it

      I would not say he is sassy, he just did not want to tell them and expected them to respect that. But why he did not say it straight away is a question that maybe you should address to a visually impaired person. I assume they can give you a better answer than me. From my experience I can say that some people who do not have all the possible abilities (and that includes people who cannot read for example) have issues telling everyone about it and they like to keep it for themselves, which I think is fair enough. But the idea behind the film is that one should not judge others when one only knows very little of them since they might have good reasons for their behaviour.
