      Can you imagine how frigidly cold it must be there in Antarctica, it must be about -50 or -60 degrees. I know in the wintertime there it gets colder than -100, but that's when it's dark outside and when nobody would be going outside because it would simply be too dangerously cold. Aircrafts at that time of year don't even take off or land, do they? Because engines would freeze up and not work within a few minutes of being exposed to that low of temperatures, wouldn't it?

      It's important to point out that isn't really snow. It's ice. Antarctica is the world's largest desert: it only gets around five inches of precipitation per year. Although the ice is derived from snow, the ice covering Antarctica is the result of around 60 million years of (minimal) snowfall that has never had the opportunity to melt off.
      Most of you will be ahead of me on this point already: if you only ever defrosted your refrigerator every 60 million years it would be almost indistinguishable from Antarctica, and just like Antarctica it'd be over-run with Polar Bears 🐻‍❄ . And trust me: from personal experience you don't want Polar Bears in your refrigerator, they eat everything and are quite anti-social. So defrost regularly folks. End of lecture.

    Are planes allowed to dump fuel anywhere ? Like... over cities ? What happens to kerosene when it is released ? Does it evaporates or is it raining kerosene on people underneath ?

    The Lufthansa 380 wasn't so much unstable as they were way off centerline. Which is very weird on a CAVU day when even an ILS isn't needed.

    Can anyone please explain why the A380 had to dump the fuel? Would they otherwise be too heavy for a safe landing?

    • @Brandon_SoMD
      @Brandon_SoMD ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. For longer-distance flights, it's very common for passenger aircraft to take off heavier than the maximum landing weight.
      For the A380, max takeoff weight is 560,000 kg (such high weights would be typical for a very long-range flight where a full fuel load is needed), but max landing weight is just 391,000 kg (usually a function of how much energy the brakes can safely absorb, plus the landing gear and fuselage structural loads on touchdown).
      So the only option for an unplanned early landing is to dump well over 100,000 kg of fuel - or fly around and burn it. Horrible for the environment, a horrible waste of money too (about $1/kg), but the only way to safely land.

    I always wonder the effects of dumping thousands of gallons of fuel over a city. This is done during emergencies, and this means the plane is normally at lower altitudes. The fuel has weight and mass so it will come down to the ground or water. They say it's perfectly safe but then again, they said Agent Orange was also perfectly safe. FAA says on average 15 fuel dumps are performed a year in the USA with the average dump being 15000 Gallons That comes to 225000 Gallons of fuel dumped into the air each year. In 10 years, that comes to 2,225,000 of fuel dumped. It will come down to the ground and water it does not just float away and disappear. And again, they say it's no problem and poses no safety concern??? When they say the term, it vaporizes that means it turns to a state of Gas so then it's going to come down with the rain or snow. The MSDA safety sheet lists just how Toxic it is. I'm not saying stop planes from flying But I am saying maybe alert the people below including Grade Schools with little Kids to go indoors for a period of time.

    les quadriréacteurs 380 et 747 beaucoup plus confortables et sur le plan sécurité ces avions étaient supérieurs aux 330 et 737 biréacteurs actuels et rien n'empèchait de moderniser ces anciens quadriréacteurs qui sont stockés à Teruel en Aragon (spain) et qui coutent une fortune à maintenir en bon état et 1 MILLION EU par avion pour remise !!! en marche : des quadriréacteurs diviseraient le nombre d'avions considérablement au regard du nombre de passagers embarqués !!! , la connerie n'a plus de limites et à tous les étages .
