I remember this song playing on the radio when I was young. So beautiful and so sad. I’m a big fan of the A Starry Night painting. My granddaughters and I created a painting inspired by Vincent’s Starry Night, that hangs on my wall. So sad too, that Van Gogh’s artwork was not appreciated until after his death.
Don McLean is such a masterful song writer - these aren't lyrics, they're poetry set to music. Home Free is the perfect collaborator - their gorgeous harmonies & singing are impeccable & their respect for other artist's vision of the music is apparent. One of my all time favorites from Don McLean's. Don's voice is still incredible and Rob's addition to this is amazing, his voice was made for this song. Many others will tell you the Vincent story and I'll leave it to them but I've known the story since before the song was origionally released.
Hi D Lynn. Your facts are correct. Vincent Van Gogh was Dutch and perhaps the greatest Painter of the Post Impressionist Period in the mid/late 1800s. Vincent committed suicide in 1890 at the age of 37 after a troubled life. Sadly he only sold one painting in his lifetime and died Penniless. Love this collaboration! "Vincent" is such a great song by Don McLean! He originally did it in 1972. What a great remake with Home Free! Rob's voice is perfect for this song. Such a beautiful tribute to the sad life of the painter Vincent Van Gogh. He suffered from depression & committed suicide. He never saw any success during his life. But now his paintings are worth millions of dollars.
This is a sad but beautifully performed song by all. And it brought tears the same as it did first time i heard it about Jan.73 we had just gotten home from westpac. I was in the navy at the time.
