Its simple in the aspect that it doesn't have a lot of elements, but rather more complicated when Online interactions take place, such as strategizing, timing, and in general how good you are alone, but I understand what your saying and in the majority of ways its true, but it does have some titles beat very little at that, I've played it for 5893 hours and in all that time never has it once gotten less complex. But point is I get what your saying and your not wrong.
PlaYCal there is a simplicity factor, but I mean obviously you can't really see how much there really is to the game just by playing 2 death match rounds for the first time ever. Think about those damn call of duty games with their 50 different attachments, perks, and equipment and kill streaks and all that bullshit. Now reduced to fixed guns, and not that many variables come in to play pre battle. I think a solid reason why it's stayed so popular against the simple point is that depending on the player it has the potential to be a quite simple game to the beginner, and they can go in a deathmatch and do decent and get a kick out of that , but at the same time have the potential to be one of the most intricate games to the pros. I feel the game scales extremely well according to skill level. Also, that I think would have been cool to stick them into a competitive match each (make sure it's an extremely low level of course) to really just give them a feel for the game and for what the objective actually is to show its just not about getting the most kills among your ever respawning teammates and enemies
