I think Luke took pity on them and didn't expect them to pay all the time. But Lorelai was so resourceful at other stuff (sewing). I'm surprised she didn't learn to cook
If I ate like that even as a teenager I would be 300 pounds. It must be nice to eat anything you want and not gain any weight.
