  • I just received the brand new 2024 version of the Flat Grind Cold Steel Spartan #21ST, so let's check it out! The original Spartan had a sabre grind, and this new version's flat grind loses a bit of weight and thickness in exchange for more slicing ability. The Spartan has Japanese Aus10a steel, a stonewash finish, a tri-ad lock, and a kukri similar blade with a kopis style handle.

    Finally someone made a vid about this change. Thank you for being the first person on TH-cam to show what it looks like!

    I was wondering about this so much! Thanks. I ordered a GSM Spartan with serrated. It appears full flat grind. Probably better slicer than the original though lol

      Definitely a better slicer! Just not as hefty

      I don't blame ya! I think it's nice for what it is, but it's a completely different knife. The original has that coolness factor and is definitely beefier

    The responsible thing for cold steel now is to remove the old spartan version test videos and do a new one with the new cold steel spartan design 🤷🏻‍♂️

      I agree they need some new advertisement for the new design. This one just came out of nowhere. I'd like to see those new vids.

  • @chrisrey9644

    Thanks for the video! My only concern is now that the blade tapers to such a thin point, how much tip strength did they sacrifice? Will it withstand hard use like the older version?

    • @BearStoneAdventures

      There is definitely a decent bit of strength being sacrificed here. I assume their thought process is that it'd be less sturdy, but have more slicing action to make up for it. It's still decently hefty tho, just not at the same level you'd expect from what a Spartan *should* be.

      @@BearStoneAdventures thank you for replying, I was looking at the Spartan to do what it used to be able to do and be part of my emergency car kit. That's out the window now!
      If I wanted a great slicer/slasher, I'd still be looking at it though.

    After using the Atlas lock on the Mayhem, I’m not sure I can go back and wrestle with the Tri-ad again. Nice video though. Didn’t know about this.

    • @BearStoneAdventures

      I haven't tried the Atlas lock yet. What's your honest review on that "fidget toy" in comparison? 😅

    • @ThreeFortySeven

      @@BearStoneAdventures I’m really enjoying it. I carried it all day yesterday and today. Had a few opportunities to use it. Like all large Cold Steel folders, it’s overkill for what I use it for, but objectively , it’s much easier to open and close rapidly. So for EDC purposes, it works better than my Voyager Tanto XL due to the ease of closing. I’ve learned to be extra careful with Cold Steel knives and have the scars to prove it. The Mayhem is no exception, but as far as usability, I find it much more accessible. My only complaint is that it’s unbalanced. Even with the easier Atlas lock, it can still get away from you. Sure you can fidget with it, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

    • @BearStoneAdventures

      I really like the sharp looking lines and ridges on the mayhem checking it out here. I tend to enjoy feeling that forward weight on the large stuff like that, but that's my personal preference. I kept an Espada Large for my edc for a long while that had what I assume would be a similar feel to that.

    • @ThreeFortySeven

      @@BearStoneAdventures If you’re comfortable with the Espada, you’ll enjoy the Mayhem. I own the Espada XL, but only because it exists lol.

    Looks like a Rajah 3 blade with a Spartan handle...

    • @BearStoneAdventures

      It's very similar. The spine is a bit different, but they both have a similar kukri style sweep on the edge side. The Spartan is bigger than a rajah 3, but smaller than a rajah 2, kinda like a halfway size between the two.

    • @BearStoneAdventures

      Yeah it seems to me that they're just using the same machines from the serrated version. Less steel, less effort, more money.

    • @jorgefernandez6407

      Less steal, not a tank anymore. Why not thin out those scales too, they don't need to be so thick. It looks to me like a good solid chop, could give it a good chip! A shame. The Spartan has always been known for it's strength and reliability, a chopper & a slicer. Not any more. More money, less product... Good video btw, subscribed too!

    On a serious note, real Spartans would've shaved their own face with that knife. I need a tutorial on that.

    I like that new design and it should thrust very well now as well as slice. 🥷

    • @BearStoneAdventures
      @BearStoneAdventures  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Being that it's thinner now, it probably won't take as much abuse for thrusting into unreasonable targets, but being that it's thinner, it should indeed penetrate a bit easier.
