I have had a half dozen tagua nuts knocking around the shop for years and couldn’t figure out what to do with them. I’m going to try turning them. Your instruction is great - thank you. Wish me luck.
Several years ago I bought some Tagua nuts for a trial at turning them. I found that I was allergic to the nut shavings created in turning. When I finished shaping the exterior of the nut I noticed the skin on my hand, wrist and forearm had developed a red rash with a mild irritation. I am glad I had not yet started any sanding. As with any oily wood (or nut) one should take precautions against any allergy. The rash faded after a reasonable time with not long term effects.
Can tagua nuts be shaved/cleaned/shaped by hand or only with machines?I don't have machinery, but I really like the look of this!! I've done similar things with strong sandpaper. Thanks for the video and your help!

I have hand carved several. They are hard as a woodpeckers lips. Make sure to use super sharp tooling .
Can you tell me why I am having trouble with the inside base or bottom of the vessel forming cracks?
A lot of these nuts have natural cracks, fill in the cracks with CA glue before hollowing out, just an idea
