      I just subbed to your channel to see what your final install will look like. Right now I’m thinking of using a hood bracket to mount an antenna on the passenger side. I’m also trying to figure out where to install the transceiver(ftm300dr) in my 2024 OB.

    I use a Diamond NR770HRKS on my vehicle. The 3M adhesive backed mount is super strong and the antenna is a fold over model for entering low clearance areas like my garage. The antenna is mounted on my hatch window and the coax is plenty long enough to reach the radio. I use it for my mobile radio. Bottom line is that I didn’t want to drill holes in my car, and there is literally only an inch or two of coax that is visible with the entire installation.

      I have the nmo version of that antenna on my suburban. It's definitely on my list of antennas I'm considering when the weather warms up. Thanks for letting me know it works for you... I've never tried a glass mount antenna and have wondered how well they work

    These mounts have been available at the Dayton Hamvention since 2000. Still have mine, still working great. The only issue is the lossy RG 174 cable. Times Microwave made a cable (LMR100 if my memory serves me right) that had better performance than the 174 coax. Waiting as well for cold weather to clear and warm up a bit before I instal my mobile in the car.

    If/when you upgrade to a mobile rig, conside gettingr a magnet-mount antenna for your Outback. I use a short (under 30") antenna for garage-clearance reasons, but can swap with a longer antenna on road trips.
    My Outback doesn't use standard hex-head seat-mounting bolts, so I couldn't use my planned "gooseneck" bolt-on mount. Instead I got a Lido wedge-mount. With a little work I got it to fit securely between the console and passenger seat. The head of my FTM-300 is conveniently positioned, with the base section under the driver's seat; works well.
    Aside from running power from the battery into the passenger cabin, my Outback is still "stock" which was a priority for me. Pull out the wedge mount, take off the mag-mount antenna, and the radio is "gone" as far as potential thieves are concerned.

      I've found that mag mounts scuff the paint over years of use so I'm going to try and avoid that this time. Thanks for the tips on the Lido mount!

    Could not find one on ama-zon but aliexpress have them as "Nagoya RB-CLP Antenna Mounting" FYI I think you need to move it around your car to find the best spot -dont think a 1/4 wave will work that great it needs a ground plane -maybe a ground independent halfwave ?

    I buy one for APRS, and it was very bad for me. The SWR was to important.
    I try the 3 SMA antennas that I own, but it did'nt work, It would maybe be ok with another antenna, or a with adding a ground on the car.
    The first time I put it on the driver windows, so on the highway, when I have to down the windows for paying, the antenne fall. At the back, as you did, it's better !

      @@SevenFortyOne I have a signal stick and use a 19" rat tail on the mount (bnc version). It works better with it. Need to check your loses on those rg174 mounts too, some aren't good for vhf/uhf. Only issue with getting a counterpoise mounted is that there are now side curtain airbags mounted under the headliner, otherwise you could use some self adhesive copper foil tape applied to the metal roof inside the headliner and run a small clip lead to the mount.

  • @jbammi
    @jbammi หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks 741, did you try adding a tiger tail to see what difference it makes. I suspect it will help since the capacitance coupling is nil as opposed to a mag mount on metal or a full fledged install on metal. 73

    In your case there's another option-those roof racks. Get a crossbar and you can mount the antenna in the center of your car roof for better radiation.

    • @SevenFortyOne
      @SevenFortyOne  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I thought about that but there are couple of reasons I probably won't go that route. First is that with the antenna up high like that I'll be limited to what will fit in my garage and I eventually want to put an antenna on the car that will work on 6 meters. Second, I will eventually be using the root to carry kayaks and an antenna on the cross bars will most likely interfere with that. I'm willing to sacrifice antenna performance for convenience/usability of other features of the car
