    Good job getting straight on the recovery Ben. Shows your good when you know when to stop and deal with something immediately. I’ve had annoying calf issues past month so I’ve been spending more time on ankle mobility and working on the calves, self massage, strength and stretching. All started after a back ‘twinge’ then high hamstring / piriformis and then the opposite calf and shin splints. Shows how important it is not to neglect body parts in training. Back to wearing the calf sleeves, they really work for me. Must be the cold weather (or getting old!) but regardless of duration or type of warm up they ain’t happy, still, all the attention has made the pain go away and running as normal. Best of luck with the recovery, you’ll be back in a flash I’m sure!

    Real shame Ben. When I saw the title of the video and then saw you running in those freezing conditions, while on big mileage, I knew what would happen next.... soleus strain. Know it only too well from my own experience. Hope it isn't too bad for you and can recover quickly. Personally I really struggled for a long time. Thankfully you did the right thing and stopped the run right away.

    Get better soon Ben!!
    One of the things I ALWAYS end up with is joint issues from not warming up - just wanted to say that seeing you warm up with a jog before a warm up before the session really made me realise how much more effort I need to put into running if I wanna hit a 3:30 Boston Qualifier...

    I’ve just had the same problem. I’m not elite though. I kept trying to come back when it wasn’t quite sorted and extended the time I had to be off. Leg compression boots and massage gun really helped though. Good luck!

    Ah Ben. Hope it is just a little niggle that will be quickly fixed! I tore my calf muscle 2 weeks before the Tokyo marathon in 2016... totally gutted. Remember hobbling back home in tears. It was meant to be only a grade 1 tear so London marathon that year should have still been ok to do but I was still not recovered in time for that. I very long slow summer of training that year but managed to be fit enough for Berlin marathon. And the relief of crossing the finish line with my calf muscle still intact was the best feeling ever!!! 5 yrs later I am still nervous with that calf muscle even though have not had another tear. But it does get a lot of love and attention! 🥰

    @ThePaulaon1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Sorry to hear that Ben. Hope you recover quickly m8. This happened to me twice last year. Thankfully it totally healed fully within a couple of weeks and no lasting damage. First time it happened I was only half a mile into a run and it popped and I had to walk back the short distance. More of a muscle spasm than a strain or a tear. Hope yours is much the same. The hamstring tendinopathy I have however has been there since early Nov 😬. Take it easy.

    • @BenParkes
      @BenParkes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Paul! Hope your hamstring gets better soon and your able to run fully again shortly!

      @theorb21 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also had something very similar a couple months back. It was a really weird aggressively painful spasm but didn't seem like an overuse injury as it seemingly healed within a couple days I was back running. In my experience overuse tends to be less painful but more nagging and takes longer to recover from.

      Strange to read this - got the exact same thing a couple of days ago: odd sudden muscle spasm meant I had to stop and it came back when tried running again yesterday... could it be to do with the freezing cold?
      Hope everyone recovers soon!

    So sorry to hear of the injury, Ben, sending good thoughts and positive vibes it heals up soon! I had something similar about a year ago, iced it and had a couple rounds of massage. I also found wearing calf compression sleeves during the day helped it heal up more quickly as well. I have had calf strain injuries in the past and didn't wear compression sleeves, so this last time they seemed to help somewhat. All the best that you get back on the road again soon! Cheers from Canada, Scott PS - we use the metric system in Canada, I don't even remember what Fahrenheit temps mean anymore :)

    Speedy recovery thoughts to you! That's so rough. I was having a great training session one day last month getting ready for my first half marathon and both calves went on me simultaneously. It feels like it's been the longest month of my life. My half marathon would have been Feb 13th and I'm a bit bummed that I couldn't do it, but I am very happy that I'm managing a few 5-6km runs a week again. Definitely better than not being able to run at all!

    Similar thing happened to me when changing running form, changing shoes to ones with lower drop made huge difference. From 10mm to 4mm. Apparently when landing on front part of the foot in shoes with high drop, causes achilles to not relax properly, causing calf to take the strain from ladning.

    Oh no!!! I always get muscle issues in winter so I have invested in some 2XU thermal tights and they are fantastic! Make your legs feel great and I don’t get cold legs and muscles anymore which I think helps me at least. It’s not about being tough for me, during training I need to keep my legs warm and protected. Hope it’s nothing too serious and a quick recovery 👍

    Yes running is tough and quite injury prone. Unlike games like table-tennis, badminton, tennis, golf where you can just spend more time doing it to get better, with running run a bit too much too fast, you will just end-up injured easily. Get well soon and God bless, we've all been there.

    Been dealing with that same issue since summer. Over trained through it and caused other issues with knee and hip... Had to shut it down in September and finally able to slowly run up to about 10 miles a week. Still wake up with some soreness. Best of luck getting it sorted!!!
