HI i have to weld a stainless prop shaft to a stainless steel shaft with splines on the end- each shaft is about 1 1/4" thick- i figure to cut each shaft in half long ways about 6-8 inches, then hose clamp them together then weld- ii can weld ok- but do i need special wire or rods? i have both welders in shop. any advise??? its for an invention of a motorcycle /trike/ boat, it wont be in water much at all, i am making a drive shaft.
+Paul Zeiss not sure what you mean ss can be dif like 316 or 304 ss to mild use 309. grind off mill scale of mild steel. thats the short answer. pic needed
haha should be feather edge bevel with 3/32 or 1/8" gap two passes, and squared up with levels or two squares and a tape not a just a square for high/low
+jedediahbc Why dont you show a video of it? He made a basic beginners video for people to watch. Its not called welding stainless pipe in pipe rack 12 feet in air. I didnt search for that, so how did you get here, did you search for that? Quit being a fucking douche bag. The video is not perfect, but then again its not for a trade school or college, is it. Its on TH-cam, which is amateur and beginner stuff. I for one appreciate that he is trying to help someone somewhere. Funny how people who put the effort into trying and making a video get down trodden by people who don't have any videos. Go on, make one, show us, show all of youtube how to welding it in a pick rack 12 feet in the air. We are waiting.
+Erik D hey buddy, first off he didn't bevel it correctly, you should have a feathered edge, then clean up the inside and outside of the pipe with a die grinder or whatever you got. after that tape the ends and have a purge gas (argon or nitrogen). then have a decent fit, it varies in pipe diameter. have the purge going good then take it about a half inch, then the bottom and then sides. with the purge on of course. if you want to watch a good beginner welding channel I suggest welding tips and tricks. oh and you need a welding hood too, those arc flashes are nasty business for the eyes.
The inside of the seam is either not penetrated which leaves a weak joint or the penetration bead will be crap without the pipe being purged - either way an amateurish job, do not copy.
The only reason I started watching because I saw TIPS AND TRICKS MR JODYS HEADLINE OTHERWISE MONKEYS LIKE YOU CANT ACHIEVE ON YOUR OWN AS OLD AS YOU ARE MAKING ME LECTURE YOU LISTEN WORLDS ABUNDANTMAKE YOUR OWN IF YOU WANT TO RESPECT I HOPE YOU LEARNED SOMETHING
This is an extremely poor example of any SS welding. The organization that is responsible should take a close look at the information they are putting out. Longevity Welding is a mfg of low cost import machines that I have used however they seem to be a bit short in the understanding of actual welding. Having the ability to run a bead on a certain type of metal IS NOT the ability to properly weld that metal. No more than running a bead on a piece of pipe makes you a pipe welder. Throwing a bunch of videos on the internet made by customers and distributors with no experience in what they are demonstrating may be ok for the home hobbiest, but actual welders will call you out. One of the bad things about the internet is the ease at which poor information can be spread.
One experience with them and it was my last. Fortunately, it didn't cost me the whole price of the machine just their fee's--had to threaten a credit card chargeback. Goes to show anyone can make a video regardless of what they know and try to pass it off as factual. Have those welds inspected by a food facility inspector and then you can buy a real machine and do it over, and right.
Sorry bro but you wouldnt make at my shop prepping or welding SS process pipe!!! Dont not follow this guys crap....will not pass xray or ultrasound test!!!!
This is an awesome video of what not to do.

Im a professional after watching this
the key is to roll the torch farther back as you go with a shallower angle as you weld ...... apparently...
