A special experience to have the Kubin Quartet playing this Janacek intense composition. They give us a masterly and strong version, better than any other quartet I have listened to. They are sorely missed at the chamber music arrangements in north Denmark, their last concert being a deeply felt loss, mixed with gratitude and joyful appreciation of many great musical events in the 16 years they took the journey northwards. Forever grateful.
Dear Ragnhild, we like to remember concerts in Denmark, especially those that were at your place. When I remember it, I have tears in my eyes ... Pavel wishes you good health and well-being
Wow. I'm used to performances which dramatise the big moments more with some space (especiallly in the last movement). So this is a different take for me. So good to see great musicians playing this quartet!

First movement melodic motiv comes from the Moravian folksong "Šohajíčku, čí si". You can listen the song here: th-cam.com/video/QmGuuFa2Nh8/w-d-xo.html
To Music Man: If you would be interested in all the many works of Janacek, I would suggest you check out "arkivmusic.com" where when you write in a composers name it will provide a bio, and a substantial listing of all the works of Janacek on CD. He composed at least six operas and the majority of these were composed after he turned 60.
From the opening bars, this piece is unmistakably Janacek, with his uniquely passionate harmonic language...Has it been transcribed for orchestra? It should be, as the music definitely lends itself to a larger scale treatment...and it's such a disappointment that Janacek wrote so little for orchestra, that it would be a major addition to the symphonic repertoire...
If you are looking for "large scale Janáček", I highly recommend his magnificent operas! In particular 'Káťa Kabanová' which was written in 1921 just two years before String Quartet No. 1. They have a lot in common (both musically and thematically). I think, there you will find what you're looking for ;)
Thanks !! Is there a performance on YT which you would recommend..I'm talking about orchestral excerpts from the opera, as opposed to the entire opera itself...
difficult and very beautiful, many thanks to you all !
Thank you for your words of appreciation!

Une des mes oeuvres préférées de Leoš Janáček. Merveilleusement intrerprétée par Kubin Quartet.
Beautiful performance. Very personal and unique.
WHAT AN AMAZING PIECE!!!!! Superb performance as well, thank you for the upload. Wow!
One my favourites!
Love the microphone bonk at 1:46mins!
amazing music & players!!
Thank you..
The end is the most wonderful recap of the controlled mayhem that was portrayed in all the movements before. Crazy good ending.
