Superb rendition. The Dream of the Blue Turtles was one of records of the 80's. So many ideas and influences put in a cooking pot and came out a masterpiece. An amazing achievement from a young man who obviously loves all music. Sting is one of the greats ..but not loved by the critics.
The critics “hated” Led Zeppelin (when they were active) too. 🙄 Panned 👎every album, particularly critics at RS. The critics at RS who roundly hated LZ, aged out or moved on and were eventually replaced with folks who grew up loving LZ, to the tide turned at the publication, but early on, the writers there passionately hated LZ, and other critics too. My comment seems weird and off topic: my point is that that the Mighty Sting, is in great company, if it is true that the critics don’t like his music.🎶 I have been a Police fan (Sting, being the main songwriter) since the late 1970s, and liked Sting when he went solo. In Short, I have liking Stings music with or without The Police.
Can’t believe I forgot about this one for 25 years until TH-cam Music app recommended it. YT music app is reminding off all kinds of great songs I forgot . Possibly the only feature of YT that’s still GREAT!
It's because in the movie / documentary, when they're shown rehearsing, the (American) singers (especially Janice Pendarvis) struggle with the correct pronounciation for the word "chasm". 😄 It comes up in the song right then.
I remember my dad showing my brother, my mum, and me this documentary when we were really young. This film started my obsession with sting. Firstly, you have to be ridiculously good and a composer and writer to get musicians as brilliant as these Jazz musicians to work under you. Yes Sting had the money but I can guarantee you a jazz musician could never work playing crap music even though they're being paid for it. Some takeaways: Branford Marsalis is as good, possibly better than John Coltrane, we lost Kenny Kirkland way too young, Omar Hakim is one of the greatest drummers of all time and Sting would have been just as successful if he was a novelist. Also, Paris was really the perfect place to premiere his work
Once again ridiculous overrating of black musicians. :/ The tempo goes here and there, Omar Hakim is a brilliant player despite his shortcoming here, but definitely not among greatest drummers of all time, the bass player is a total joke - fortunately Sting returned to bass -, Kenny Kirkland was good, hardly exceptional... but have to(!) agree with you on Marsalis, he is/was bloody awesome!
@@mansenmias Dude.....firstly, looks like your problem is not music, its something else. Omar Hakim is not a pop drummer. He's a jazz drummer. Sting picked him up from Weather Report. Unless you think Joe Zawinul, Jaco Pastorius and Wayne Shorter aren't great musicians and would hire similarly sub-standard players to join their group. Dienda, played by Branford Marsalis(written by by Kenny Kirkland) in the 80s and redone with lyrics by sting during the Italy concerts that became the All This Time album is a sublime composition. You didn't even look at Kirkland's solo to Shadows in the rain.......do you know any of his work......like at all?
@@mansenmias And actually you're right.....Omar is not the greatest drummer of all time. That honor goes to Fela Kuti's wizard that played with him during his golden period in the 70s, Tony Oladipo Allen.
Belated Amen to that. Omar Hakim was brilliant on Dream of the blue turtles and Kenny Kirkland equally so. That album is one of the best examples of perfect synergy between a singer songwriter and musician and other musicians I've ever witnessed.
Which is weird because it doesn't sound live at all (apart from the solo part at the beginning). Audio is way too good to be live and he's not even singing into the mic for half of it. Presumably they replaced the original audio for the movie.
This brings back horrible horrible memories.. for me that I face to dismantel evvveeerrryday. Man! he had A THING for the woman in the skirt/pants? Personally, I think they... ràarrr rarrrr rarrr. You know heee heee heee.
The complexity and richness of this song is stunning. Pure genius.
It's rare that you see such genius as this, jazz meshed with pop, an infectious chorus, and then the lyrics are pure poetry that have true meaning.
Omar Hakim is brilliant here!
Yup, Omar and Darryl are ace, so are Branford, Kenny, Dolette and Janice.
Sting is the ultimate! ❤🤩
It’s such a gorgeous song.
Damn that band is 🔥
Thanks ! Don't know why Fortress isn't on the soundtrack album -- it's the most memorable song in the film.
Totally agree!
It’s supposedly about his first divorce, maybe that had something to do with leaving it off. The timing may have been bad.
This is by far the best fortress song, because of the intro.

For sure! This is one of those rare songs where I keep hitting repeat!!

Me too!!!
Me too! One of my favorite sting songs from the 80s
It’s so good right?! I heard it the other day and had completed forgotten about it decades ago. Hits so good!
No kidding...I just remembered it too...
My God I love this song!
I love the subtle smiling looks Sting and the one pretty back up singer made!
Thats exactly what i was going to post. 😃👍

One of his own favorites

@@juanestadian8471 what about Papa Jo Jones, Roach, Blakey, Morello, Elvin Jones, Krupa. It is very audacious what you have said.
chords, lots of them, genius !
Che meraviglia!
80s air in my mind
Damn this is good!
Brandford Marsalis is outstanding...
Wow!
Un temon, un N°1 de la musica!
Thanks for sharing this great live recording.
Greats Song and big artists
Yo me creía fanático de Sting, pero esta gran canción la descubrí hace unos meses. ¿Cuantas más están por ahí que no he descubierto?
Is everyone in the crowd dead? This would have been insanely cool to see live. I never would have been able to control myself during the chorus!
I think this was recorded and performed before anyone had ever heard these songs.
High klass
😀😍😍😍💌
Christ, that’s a big place and very high too for indoors! How many are there? Has to be a couple of thousand. And where is this place?
Dang, he was kinda hot, huh?
2023
Who’s in the piano there? This song is the prelude to Soul Cages and Nothing like the Sun.
Hey! If you look at any of Sting's shows from the early 90's this song is the prelude to Soul Cages!!
Kenny Kirkland
Omar Hakim y Darryl Jones en 2011 lo dudo y mucho, yo situaría en 1986 esa grabación.
Is the tempo on this all over the place or is it me?
Starts out too fast and then speeds up

love the song - in my top 10 of all time... - but just a bit too fast...
Could easily have been a Police song!
This brings back horrible horrible memories.. for me that I face to dismantel evvveeerrryday. Man! he had A THING for the woman in the skirt/pants? Personally, I think they... ràarrr rarrrr rarrr. You know heee heee heee.
not him in 2011 oooh oops!
The song sounds great, but also reads like a creeper song... Then again, with every breath you take... He will be watching you 👀
This faster tempo ruins this song...
