The 12" MacBook should be called MacBook Air The 13" MacBook Pro without the touch bar should simply be called MacBook And the 13" and 15" variants with the touch bar should be the ones called MacBook Pros
Those programs are tailored for pc, so pc's would be the best option. Just look at how far behind rhinoceros is for mac. Also, they depend alot more on the hardware than editing software in general.
I use my 2014 Razer Blade for CAD, Maya and game design and I highly recommend it. The new ones are much better even. I think if you want to use a mac last year's model will work as well as this new one too for a lot less green.
For pure video editing especially 4K performance the MacBook is best right now. But for everything else (photos, 2D, 3D, CAD, programming, gaming, game design, typing, etc.), you can find equivalents or better on Windows machines.
Jonathan, but that IS the point. The point is that Adobe can't get their shit together, when it comes to optimization. And there are many other ways to compare performance, not everyone is a video producer. I would even argue, that the rest of the lineup shouldn't be called Pro either, since all of them have these new keyboards, which compromise usability for professional writers.
Adobe' optimization is worse because PCs are much much much much more diverse in specs while Macs aren't very diverse at all imo. It's like iOS and Android, Google has to optimize for thousands of different models and manufacturers so not everything is perfect.
Khoa Phan True. Especially when it comes to rapidly evolving graphics market. But as far as quality laptops (and now tablets) go - for the last few years Intel dual/quad core CPUs with integrated graphics have been flooding the market. Same architecture, pretty much the same stuff to work with. And Adobe just keeps promising...
This is the problem with this comparison. @Jonathan Morris picked a test that highlighted the difference between software designed for a dGPU and software designed for an iGPU, but he ran the test using two computers with iGPUs.
Andrew Marinho I will consider myself an Apple fanboy however I feel about Apple messed up on this MacBook Pro. For example 1) if you brought a brand-new iPhone 7 you will not be able to charge that phone using the new MacBook Pro without an adapter. 2) Also if you have a brand new iPhone 7 that came with lightning based headphones you will not be able to use those headphones with your new MacBook Pro, which means you have to carry around two different types of headphones 3) The MagSafe that the previous MacBooks had were so convenient because if somebody tripped over your cord it will not pull your almost $2000 laptop crashing to the floor
I think you maybe focusing too much on the iPhone. Whether the iPhone 7 headphones or is able to charge on the MacBook Pro is almost irrelevant. You would have to make the assumption that everyone who uses a MacBook is actually using the iPhone 7. That should not hold precedent when trying to design the computer.
Your comparison isn't exactly an Apple's to Apple's comparison. Okay, Final cut pro is better optimized for mac, but you're taking the narrow perspective of someone who makes videos. What about several other programs where Apple doesn't make an optimized competitor. What about games? Just because the macbook performed better in one specific scenario does not mean it is the better performer overall.
Exactly! The FCP example was like he started a game on both laptops and then said it runs much better on Windows. You see you pay for the software, the directX. Mind you there are way more gamers than video editors.
lol. games don't matter, no one games on a mac. it's common knowledge but ya. he does focus a lot on the video making aspect over anything; but, that is where his expertise is at. you wouldn't want someone who doesn't have the knowledge to talk about something he doesn't know, would you? it would make people who does understand what he is saying cringe
I've asked Jonathan in another reply if he can take a best configuration $1499 Windows laptop to compare against this $1499 MacBook Pro 13 Retina late 2016.. One with Nvidia discrete graphics, the fastest SSD and most memory possible for the price and similar display resolution...etc.. Then, compare that Windows laptop running Adobe PP with the Mac running FCPX (and also Adobe PP as another data point). I think that would be more fair.
Ha ha, nice to see I'm welcomed here. Aww, thank you guys. Especially you, RickstinXi. 3-4-5 Triangle, yes, I did watch this video. I have a 2014 MacBook Pro 15 inch, and I have to carry around an ethernet adapter. With the new one, there is no HDMI output, will be a pain if you do lot of presentations. Juggling for adapters. And all adapters don't work the same way, it can get annoying, trust me. It will be more difficult with the new one.
Vixen on Weed I didn't get what you are trying to say, buddy. Are you saying, everyone else has to catch up while you have the latest ports? Anyway, what I'm saying is from my experience. Maybe not so inconvenient for others.
***** Yup, saw that buddy. Was subdued, but he did mention it. For his workflow, the advantage he got with the better software performance outweighed the inconvenience caused due to lack of ports.
I like my new MacBook Pro 13 inch base model. I enjoy the new keyboard, trackpad, excellent screen, and amazing build quality. I use this laptop solely as a device for school. I don't need any crazy ports, and stop crying about it too. $40 on amazon gets you sd, micro sd, 2 USB A, and an hdmi port FROM ONE USB C PORT. if you really wanted to you could get more ports out of these 2 usb c ports than the dell xps 13. The MacOS is the easiest most simplistic I've used coming from windows up until this MacBook. Time and time again id say windows deterioration is real. The laptop does have low specs for the price, but the optimization with the specs is what shows. The performance out of the relatively low specs is faster than many windows laptops and the butter smoothness from the MacOS is unreal. Id recommend this laptop to those with the money because I do agree it is VERY steep. If you don't like the laptop stop hating and crying about it on all the videos I'm just getting tired of it at this point. If you don't like it don't buy it, if you don't have the money for it the world doesn't have to know either. I enjoy this MacBook and this has no bias as I came from windows my whole life until now, I only switched because I needed a laptop that lasts, and windows never last for me.
"Unbiased". Nothing about only having USB-C ports. Pros need dem SD card slots Or cores on the CPU. A Pro machine does not have only 2 cores. Or nothing about the keyboard. If you're making a laptop for pros, HAVE A GOOD KEYBOARD! Or about upgradeability, You know swapping parts more easily. EDIT: Apparently some people don't understand a concept called "irony". It's biased. Also explaining.
he's an isheep. He'll buy any apple laptop out there.Test a $200 editing software (final cut pro) on it and give it a good review based on that.It makes sense cuz everyone who owns a macbook uses fcpx /s
Cores on the CPU doesn't really matter because as he said specs don't matter if the OS isn't optimized well enough to know how to handle them. So as he compared it to the HP laptop on paper it had better specs but the Macbook completely destroyed it because of the optimization of software and hardware. Nothing about the keyboard because there is really nothing to complain about it.
even though this is possible, your problem is hardware compatibility. Also, I can confidently say that the r/w speeds will not go for the better as macs use superior SSDs that most competitors out there
True it aint the mac that is faster its Final cut pro....adobe premier is fucking slow whether you run it on mac or windows. But he did make a point kinda.
undermine his point? how? by including an application that works for both os'? The issue here is that it's not an accurate way of measuring the capability of the system. What if a windows user was planning on switching to a mac, while still having an Adobe subscription? What if that user has had years upon years of experience with a workflow that has been designed around Premiere? While we're at it, not everybody who uses a mac uses it for video editing. People like myself (photographers) use the mac for Photoshop and lightroom. Both of which rely on having more (and more powerful) cores.
i agree that adobe needs to up their game when it comes to optimization. But I wanna say a few things. I don't understand why people say specs don't matter. If that was the case then apple would still be at 1GB of RAM for their iPhones and iPads, 8mp cameras, and dual core processors and also everyone will still have 10 year old computers because "specs don't matter." And the thing is the people that say specs don't matter are the exact same people that get excited when their products get a spec bump. I'm confused as to why people say specs don't matter, but yet are mad at apple for not upgrading the mac pro since 2013. So unconsciously people do like better specs, I think apple just tells consumers that they "optimize" their software to justify under powered products. When adobe updates premiere to perform like final cut, then I really wanna see what apple is going to say to justify their prices since they won't really have anything to back them up. And lastly I think the reason why apple screws us (the consumers) is because we keep agreeing with them for doing unexplainable things like removal of the headphone jack and lack of ports.
Its not really about specs, but the numbers the market try to sell to you. Of course better specs is always a good thing, but that doesn't mean a Quad Core processor will always be better than a Dual Core. It doesn't mean a 256SSD will always be as fast as any other 256SSD. It doesn't mean a 2.3GHz processor will always be better than a 2.0GHz processor. Also, there are other factors involved: a higher clock may lead to a worse battery life and overheat. A higher amount of RAM may lead to more energy consumption. And of course, higher specs may leads to an even higher price. Higher numbers doesn't always mean better specs. This is why optimization is so important. That mean you can have a machine that is lightweight, have a great battery life and still performance really well.
LuneTech Its probably not "specs don't matter at all", but rather "specs aren't the only things that matter". I think the apple peeps are sort of jabbing at the pc industry where people are obsessed with every bit of clock speed you can get. although this may have benefits for the occasional extreme gamer, for general use, i dont think most people will feel the difference between a 2600k and 6700k. And to be honest i actually think thats been worse off for the software industry as developers get lazy and code sloppy stuff knowing hardware will cover their asses. but i digress. people are just upset that the mac pro seems to have forgotten. can we just all agree that it takes both hardware and software?
STFU. It's not "specs don't matter" it's "specs aren't everything". OF COURSE products need to keep up to date with specs, which Apple and every other manufacturer does do. The difference is, all of Apple's products perform better with their software because of optimization. The point is dumbasses that only care about specs and say Apple products are shit don't factor in software at all. Specs matter... kind of. Software optimization goes a much longer way than specs do. It is after all software that makes you computer run. You can have a computer made 10 years from now with crazy future specs but it might not even be able to boot up a modern operating system because it doesn't know wtf is happening. You actually have to WRITE great software in order to make ANY hardware useful. I would take an Apple product for media ANY day, because even 3-year-old Macs compared to the latest spec on PC today still shit on Windows based programs when doing audio and video editing. That's how much specs don't matter. Not that they don't matter at all, just that they matter a lot less than you think. AND OF COURSE even Apple consumers love spec upgrades because that means their devices are EVEN FASTER. But they are only faster because Apple knows how to write software for performance.
Ansgar Feicht if you grab a pc and a Mac both with identical specs, the pc will slightly outperform it. so windows is doing pretty good considering how poorly optomized it is compared to MacOS. btw I got that info from youtube comparisons so I didn't make this up
LuneTech I'm not saying WINDOWS isn't optimized. I'm saying shit like Adobe isn't optimized. Apple's own software is more optimized... And usually third party software is more optimized in most cases for Mac OS and iOS. Windows itself as an operating system is pretty good now.
Yeah, Jonathan, if you could also give us some idea of the FCPX performance differences between 2016 12" MacBook (in addition to the last refresh of 13" MBPr and 15" MBPr), that would give us some idea of where this thing falls in line.
YEAH BUT APPLE LOGO THAT DOES NOT LIGHT UP *Apple fucked up badly* Love my mbp 2015 tho. But that apple logo shine ain't for me. I look for the blessing light.
After waiting for the 2016 to be released for months and holding off, I rolled my eyes and bought the macbook pro 2015. It will be arriving tomorrow. I was disappointed with the specs compared to the cost. Then when I saw the lack of ports... that was the last straw. 2015 it is.
Dude, Do you realize that you actually just posted that your stoked you just bought a laptop that has 3 year old hardware? APPLE, what happened to you. CRY.
I guess I just assumed anybody who bought a new computer would be stoked. But this is exactly my point. we are now buying Apples because we feel we need to look cool still in coffee shops but we're hating our purchases. Hence my comment Apple what have you done to yourself. We need the maker steve jobs back
Carter Johnson I got a Mac simply because I need something a little more functional and easier for on-the-go that also works across all my devices (iPad and iPhone). As far as 13-inches, Apple is still arguably the best despite the subpar specifications. I have a 17-inch laptop with much better specs that I paid about the same price for. And I still have my desktop too. My Mac will be mostly for travel and writing projects. Also, I'm not some Mac fanboy. I have an iPhone because my job gave me one. And I still have my personal phone- an Android (which I prefer). I also haven't stepped foot in a coffee shop in at least 6 months....
Still think you should have done Premier vs Premier, I mean how can you do a comparison when the variable are entirely different? Everything else in the video was pretty good.
The point wasn't testing the hardware, rather the optimization between hardware and software that Apple uses. Apple is really good at that, because it's a closed ecosystem, much like the iPhone. You can squeeze out as much power as efficiently as possible
and the toold inside final cut are overwhelmed by sony vegas, premiere, after effects, you have to compare final cut with movie maker not those monsters, cause in macs you have speed but cheap software
He did the same thing that apple did at their launch event. Comparing apple to apple - literally. Because that the best they can come up with anyway, specially when other manufacturers are killing them with design and price to performance ratio.
I think many would appreciate a HP Spectre vs Macbook Pro 2k16......I think there are more factors to compare each other on as its not just the speed of the laptop that matters......thanks Jon!
Who edits video on a Laptop? That seems downright painful. All of 2016 so far for Apple has just been a complete cash grab. I'll stick with my 4790K/1080 build that didn't cost all that much more than the dual core i5 with integrated graphics but absolutely destroys it in every single way.
Most people can't afford separate editing machines. You buy gear for a purpose. If you're on the go a lot AND edit, a laptop is what you get. I hate using laptops in general (without accessories), but I get why people buy them.
Whilst I totally get why Jonathan chose to use Final Cut Pro X and a folder copy as his benchmarks here in order to help his case, I can't help but feel that they present a rather biased and unrealistic view of how powerful this machine is. The benchmarks chosen here present possibly the only two scenarios in which this 2016 macbook would beat the less expensive HP machine. In the speed tests run by Laptop Mag the HP beat the Macbook in every benchmark except the data transfer speed test and since the HP comes with a 256 or 512Gb SSD the performance on the inbuilt drive will be more than sufficient to edit 4k or even 5k video with no issues. After all, this speed is only relevant when copying or moving/accessing folders within the drive on the Macbook itself. If transferring large files from an external drive or SD Card (with dongle of course) you are limited to the speed of the slowest component (not that I would be complaining about the speed of the drive in the Macbook of course) and who is copying/duplicating 25Gb folders on their own harddrive where the speed is really evident - what would you do that for? Certainly the HP is a superior machine in terms of raw performance and to state that optimisation in Final Cut Pro X (due to the use of background rendering and Intel's Quicksync codec I presume?) proves otherwise is a little misleading in my mind. Love your video production though, Jonathan - it really is superb.
I'm sorry to break down to you Jonathan but the i7 in the HP comuter is much much better in real life scenarios. If only you would make sure you were using the correct codec or simply used Sony Vegas instead you would notice that. Also 16gb ram in a laptop for video editing is kinda getting a bit low. Fuck apple.
Hands down Adobe PP is the worst NLE you can work on. I really wish people would just drop it. Both Vegas and Resolve kill it in speed and more importantly in workflow. Vegas and Resolve employ common sense logic while PP does not. PP requires you to nest sequences in order to do some basic tasks that you want to apply across the project and that is just nonsense. Any NLE you pick besides Vegas & Resolve like Pinnacle, Edius, etc. will most likely offer you a better experience than PP.
Just goes to show you that you don't need to be using that much RAM or processing power to get the job done. So what, you spend more on more processing power and RAM on a PC, use more expensive software, spend more time editing just to deliver the same product. Sounds like inefficiency to me. Grow up.
I agree with you on just about everything you said. I would point out the experience of editing in Premiere Pro is generally better and despite faster render times I find it faster to edit complex projects in Premiere Pro than the train wreck that is Final Cut Pro.
***** If you go by the 13" MacBook Pro without the touch bar, it's actually less than the OLD MacBook Pro if you update the old one to 256gb of storage.
Walter Kingstone that might be true in ur country but not in the uk. (btw they've increased the price of the old macbook pros too so maybe ur right in that way. before they were cheaper.
Walter Kingstone For me I find the lack of typical ports like the headphone jack and USB-A an annoyance because of how prevalent they still are. It seems to me Apple are trying to hard to make some of their accesories part of their closed ecosystem whereby you have to buy their dongles for your usual stuff to work. Don't get me wrong I like the aesthetics of a lot of Apple's products but the functionality is just a bit lacking. And of course the high price too is a bit high to justify (for me) when I can buy something with similar or better performance, while still looking good, and maintaining functionality that I need.
I've been using my mid-2009 15 inch mbp for 7 years now, and the things still works great, except it lags a bit now even after a ram update.. I would love to have a new mbp! :)
khairul USacc oh I forgot to mention, I did upgrade to the samsung 500 gb ssd last year. as soon as I updated, everything seemed much better, but things have been slowing down lately
James Kim it's the OS software problem, it is forcing you to buy new Mac. if you didn't update to latest OS, it will still be fast for couple more years (until chrome, whatever browser eating up your rams and lags the whole system). my sister had her macbook pro for 8 years and didn't update to latest os but still runs like new without upgrading ssd (except for rams)
FCPX and Premiere, how is this fair? "This is not the point", actually it is, I use FCPX but the Premiere + After Effects blows any shitty prosumer (such as us dear Jon) software out the water. Need I say more? Element 3D, I don't think I need more than that, so yes you should make an apple to apple comparison and stop repeating this bullshit over and over again. Also it’s not a fair comparison as is, the Spectre should be compared to, at least, last year’s MacBook 12’’ model (please never say it’s a capable machine, makes my head hurt). Regards.
Actually, different video encoders may have different presets that directly affect performance. Even using the exact same encoder on the same machine with different configurations will give you way different results... And these configurations aren't only the bitrate... I cannot really see the point on that comparison the Mac with FCPX and the HP with Premiere and it gets even harder for me to grasp as Premiere is available for both.
João Estevinho I mean, I know what he means "PCs don't have the option, that's their fault" and from a prosumer standpoint that's fine, but Premiere isn't just a beast of a program by itself, it's the AE + Plugin combo that really seals the deal! If one has to simply put a shitty laptop review together, FCPX is going to do just fine, I get it, heck, I like FCPX, Mac Os still has its advantages, software wise they're still kicking it (not sure for how long this is going to last though, I've been using Windows 10 lately and, I gotta say, it's been working like a charm on my Cintiq Companion). But let's not kid ourselves then, you'd just be buying a piece of software knowing that the hardware is just shit, and it is, let's face it. Also, yes, it does bother me paying that amount of money for a castrated hardware such as this. If mom needs to do the taxes and dad needs a fancy way to note the groceries than okay, buy that shit or an iPad, whatever makes your boat float, but it's ridiculous to call this a "capable machine". Regards.
I think Jonathan missed the point on the performance aspect.Yes, we know MacOS software blows out some windows software out of the water, but this costs $1500!!! For that price, it SHOULD have an i7 CPU. And guess what? Those performance measures that you saw that MacBook get could be increased even more if it had a better processor. Also, as usual, why does this thing cost so much and have no dedicated graphics? Only two ports? This is basically what the 12 inch MacBook should have been last year, minus the price tag and lack of ports.
It doesn't make sense +Jonathan Morrison because what make the MacBook look good against the HP is the fact that FCPX make it look faster. What really puts the performance of both laptops is make them both export with the same software. What you just showed was software optimization not hardware optimization. It would be fair if Microsoft had a video editing software optimization for Windows but since it isn't the case then the most fair thing to do was to test both laptops with Adobe Premiere. Don't get me wrong I have a rMBP 15 but you have to be fair.
Alexis Carrasquillo I agree. I think it is good to show comparisons between software. but i think it's a complete disservice to consumers to not show an apples to apples comparison. of the market demanded it enough, that same software optimization could come to windows. it's not fair to skew the story just so it's in the MacBook favor. because we know that final cut is fast. but we want to see how fast the MacBook pro is in comparison with a similarly priced laptop. that means apples to apples. giving one a headstart by giving it a software that has a speed advantage (where premiere has other advantages) is not a fair comparison.
I think the whole point is to show that if you use programs that apple provides (i.e. their variants to what you can get on windows), such as garageband, logic pro x and FCPX, you will get an insanely fast and smooth experience. But if you use software that does not have any favour towards apple, then there isn't much point in buying this laptop compared to the HP spectre. I would buy the new macbook pro but I'm only interested in photo editing on Adobe photoshop, lightroom and camera raw, so someone like me paying a price premium to buy the MBP is almost pointless.
He didn't want to point out neither Hardware nor Software optimization, but Everyday User Experience. If I'm editing, I'm going to do it with the best software compatible with my machine. Thus, it doesn't come down to only numbers, but to the whole ecosystem of your machine (OS, apps, hardware). It seems underpowered than other laptops, but in real life usage, for the same price, to the same people that always bought a MacBook, it's really good. And I have to say gimmicks like better memory, better speakers, better build quality and aesthetics are worth every penny spent on a MacBook, not because I'm a fan (I don't own any Apple product) but because in practice a not-as-good laptop comes at little less than a MacBook.
Thats the problem here EllBock this is a way too expensive laptop and since he is doomed to use them he's trying to justify he's purchase. I do own a MBP and its my 2nd one and I always loved them because a MBP use to be the way to go when you need a good laptop even though it was a pricy one. But this time it doesn't justify the price and not everybody on a MacBook is doing video editing, there are programmers, image editors and a bunch of other guys out there. I really wanted this new MBP to be an awesome one but the only thing that makes this laptops stand out from others is OS X (macOS). Yes every dollar count when you buy a MacBook, of course it does because if you want one with the things you want to buy it will cost you $1,799 or more. +Jonathan Morrison don't get me wrong here man I'm a subscriber and I really love your videos but lets be honest here, It's way too expensive and nobody expected them to be this expensive. You guys where thinking that the prices will be the same and whatever they make you were going to buy it but even though you are going to (so ***** ) it made you think twice this year.
EllBock but he used final cut pro as a universal example of why MACS should be better optimized. Final cut pro is great. But don't use that as an argument and say that MACs are more "optimized".
That's totally fair Jonathan! Comparing Adobe Premiere on the Spectre (which is running off the CPU as the Intel HD GPU isn't supported) to Final Cut Pro X on the MBP 2016 (which is using the Iris Pro graphics card for acceleration)... Maybe you should compare a PC laptop with an nVidia 970 or 1060?
I agree with you. The absence of functionality from the computer at this point in time is the reason why I won't be updating to anything newer than a 2015. At least the older macs have a headphone jack (which I use, ALOT). I also use USB-A and ethernet ports to directly get internet connection.
Simple question: is it worthy to be called pro? Set this aside lets have the one with the touchbar is it worthy to be called pro? Or is it pro dongles, pro thinness, pro price, pro portability (though i think with the added dongles its a bit uhhmm) but looking forward it is: Pro performance no doubt yes, pro screen yes, pro build quality yes ( though it should be necessary pro or not pro) Not hating i use apple products too its just that i am having thoughts on the word pro for the latest iteration of their devices. Or is it a strategic move?
camicazi oh wow so the added 200 is for the screen improvements only? Cause they cant say its for the new processors or the new trackpad or keboard. Man i have to do a research on that
Gelo Saurus they also made the ssd bigger and faster, but the cpu is the most important part in the mbp imo, so I just dont understand why they downgraded that part
camicazi to be honest i am not really that knowledgeable about all the tech terms but hardware works with the software well in the macbooks just like how optimized it is with iphones. Like an android phone need crazy specs to run smoothly but ios needs only like half of that to run smoothly. But the thing is, yes it is optimized but the price tho. Always at a super premium.
What about comparing the Final Cut Pro processing on the 2016 MacBook Pro with the previous to see if the performance it's night and day light Apple said at the event and to see if it's worth the upgrade
User of both mac and pc here. Mac better at graphics/music, pc better at gaming/productivity - nothing new here. But you only compare one aspect - I'm sure many would love to see the other comparison as well. More people probably do gaming/business analytics work than graphics/music.
Then why are you even thinking of Macbook Pro 2016 get the older one if you really want more ports and macOS or get a Razer or Dell laptop with Windows
The performance difference that is observed in this video is very likely entirely due to the PCIe SSD. The processor isn't really faster, but the SSD really is. Final Cut and Adobe Première are disk intensive application, and having a PCIe SSD is a big advantage here. Now if you get another laptop with PCIe SSD, you'll get comparable performance. Where this MBP sucks though, is in raw processor performance (at least for the 1,800USD version), and in an application which is CPU heavy like Photoshop or Lightroom, or worse any 3D software, this MBP will get trumped. So the MBP2016 is faster than the MBP2015 in one area: disk intensive applications. In raw CPU performance, I'm waiting for other tests.
It's just well optimized software. It's ass hardware for the price tho. Take for instance the PS4 or Xbox spec wise there shit they have around 1.3Tflops of compute power. But what makes them run games at medium settings and 30 fps for 350$ is the optimized software. Btw I'm not saying medium settings and 30 fps are enjoyable settings to game at. I have a custom gaming rig were I play all my games on 4K 60+ fps
No.. You can export the same file faster on fcp on a mac than you can using premiere pro on a PC. If you're really good with premiere you would edit faster on both a pc and a mac than fcp, missing the fucking point bruh
Final Cut is Apples software? If yes, it this not a stupid and unfair test? or more like a useless test? If HP had their own program like Final Cut, HP could have it optimised it just as or better to their computers? You only showed Apple software runs very good on Apples computers...
Who cares where the advantage is coming from. The fact that it exists is good for the ones among us who aren't just jerking off to tech specs, but actually need to get shit done.
The point is that HP doesn't have that software. By buying an Apple product you're also paying for potentially deadly fast super optimized software. That's what Jonathan is saying.
it's not just Final Cut, it's also the OS and all kinds of other software. Trust me, I've been on Windows all my life and only recently switched to a MacBook Pro. Never going back.
Do you realize how silly what you said was? Of course Mac software runs better on Macs. Macs are faster anyway. Get that Quad core i7, with the DDR4 Ram, Macbook Pro 15"
someone's gotta crack the code here how is apple doing magic? comparitively low specs high performance mac os is way smooother but that big difference in performance test against a higher spec notebook is mindblowing apple products always optimize stuff with any specs. hope windows could do something as well too like if u agree
If the manufacturers had invested a little bit in Linux desktop... I have a 4-year old HP Ultrabook that is almost unusable in Windows 10, but it is faster than Macbook 12 when running Linux. And the Ultrabook doesn't even have a SSD, mind you.
I'm very glad that you made this video..this is why I've always loved Apple! Their hardware and software and other devices just work so well together in a blink of an eye..and that's the point that people are missing...most people just say that you can't game on Macs..which is the only argument they have really. Clearly I don't game..that's why I own Apple products..I do actual work, that needs to get done fast.
That comparison between the HP and MacBook is because of the much more powerful Iris graphics with 64MB eDRAM in the MacBook, not some pie in the sky "optimization". Despite a small processor bump, the HP has a much weaker GPU, that's what you're seeing there. Plus Apples new custom SSD I'm sure. People aren't giving the hardware enough credit for this difference, "optimization" is vague and not the whole story. It's the same as when people cite optimization for when the Apple A series SoCs beats SoCs with more cores and higher clocks, they don't understand that certain benchmarks are low level and meant to get past the OS, it's because the design of the CPU cores themselves is above and beyond, not that optimization magically makes hardware twice as fast.
So, the truth about the 2016 MacBook Pro is that you can say from, what were your words.... when comparing to pieces of very different software in a NON "an apples to apples" comparison you get different results. Well wow. I was under the impression Adobe was designed to run using a GPU with CUDA cores. So you are running Apples software on hardware the software was designed to run on, against a test using Adobe software on a machine it was not optimized for. Don't you think you could have found a test that wasn't so .... I don't know blatantly biased?
Eric Pellegrini totally agree.. this comparison is just like : "my new macbook pro can run FIFA 17 on 70FPS, and the HP Spectre is running Battlefield 1 on 50FPS.. so macbook wins. because who cares? I never played battlefield"
well he stated that he used Final Cut Pro to show how optimised it is with MBP's hardware. So this video is meant to showcase the experience using a Macbook Pro, showing that when you're buying a MBP, you're not paying for the hardware on paper, more like the experience that comes with the fully optimized software. (even though I still personally think that its waaay too overpriced, especially when they get rid of the ports like that). Sorry if my English isn't good
Your English is fine. But the argument doesn't hold water. Adobe is optimized for CUDA processing with a NVIDIA chip. Optimization isn't something unique to Apple computers and software, or their price points. And for less you can get better optimized performance.
Fame Little Sold already lol. But I gotta admit that they hold a higher resale value due to their demand in public. Better jump off the sinking ship before everyone else understands that Apple is going down and stop buying.
asemnafiz If only I didn't have to pay my contract off for another 8 months. I want to get the LG V20 ASAP but my friend may get a Pixel and give me his G5 which I love
The argument of that's "not the point" of comparing apples to apples is bs. If Apple put the same capable hardware in the Macbook Pro then it would be faster even, no? It's clear as day that they want to hold back on the hardware in case others come up with better software optimisations.
The really problem is Adobe is a piece of software optimized for NVIDIA GPUs. At the very best, this test would be a comparison between software designed to run on an iGPU and software designed to run on a dGPU, but running on an iGPU. And even at it's best it conflates so many different things, everyone should walk away from this saying it's a pointless test.
If you are getting a computer for schoolwork or editing you should get a macbook. If you want the best all rounder for everything and upgradability get a pc.
Isaac if you want an overpriced sh*t, get a macbook If you want to have problems not knowing how to use your computer get a pc with linux If you want to be a winner get a windows pc ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
That comment is directed at gamers. If you're a college or even highschool student you'd be better off with a macbook. It's better in nearly every way.(Not spec-wise but performance wise)
Bought this base model few days ago. Everything works great. New keyboard is super fast and comfortable. Screen is gorgeous. The only bad thing is price, but the more i use it, the more i understand, why it is so expensive.
I discovered your channel recently and I really like it. I was planning to sell my 2009 Mac Pro to get a 15" MPB (not the new one, as I really don´t want to loose the Magsafe connector and the SD Card reader). I always thought that FCPX would really be a snail with Intel Iris GPUs. But after watching your videos I´ve decided to go with last´s year MBP with a i5 2,9 ghz and 512 gb SSD and keep the Mac Pro for more complex works. Thanks!
***** Where did I brag and justify about the price? I merely stated that I'm having a good time with my current Macbook Pro and see no use in the new Macbook.
See that's the issue with your video export test, Jonathan: you're comparing Final Cut to Adobe, not MacBook Pro to HP Spectre. That you don't understand that distinction invalidates your entire point of view.
Ok, first of all, you exported the footage directly from Premiere. It's faster if you use Media Encoder. Secondly, depending on the codec of the footage you're using, if you tick the "Use Previews" box before exporting it's way faster. Also there are other laptops cheaper than the Macbook Pro with better graphics cards than the Spectre. This really makes a huge difference when working in Premiere. You should take all these things into account when choosing an editing laptop. I still think there are better options than the Macbook Pro/Final Cut pro in the PC laptop market.
you are using final cut pro (apple software) on a WINDOWS laptop , then compare it to a macbook pro??? ... thats some BS unfair comparision lol compare windows movie maker on the HP VS final cut pro on mac ,
But that's the whole point of an ecosystem. Apple created that software for the Mac and mac only. On top of that, fcp is a pro software whereas movie maker isn't. You buy the macbook for the proprietary ssd, software, and other tech they developed. It's pricey for that apple touch. Now, I don't own one and by god do I wish I could touch one for a couple of days to get a good understanding of that "Apple" build quality, but you gotta admit the ecosystem is perfect.
Oh and he used Premiere Pro vs Final Cut on the software side, which speaks volumes for the optimization. You can learn to really appreciate software optimization from Apple. But don't take my word for it I haven't touched one. Take his and that video.
So you are literaly screwed by apple that says "buy our shit, or use other software, because we make it slow as fuck on other systems." There is no doubt they could have optimized their software for windows, but "screw you users, go buy some overpriced laptops"
I repeatedly had to do things on an iPhone 6 my former boss had (help him with mundane stuff), along with his iPad. Since I couldn't convince him to upgrade to Android, it really played its (albeit, small in overall prospective) role in me quitting, I couldn't bare working with such sub-par usability products.
My first smartphone was an iPhone 5 and I hated it. It was so simple and overall a bad experience. I also have an iPad air that I got as a gift. I owned and own Apple products, yet still really dislike the entire experience of using one.
I hate it coz everytime the Mac has an OS update, I have to wait for Matlab to issue an update to make It work with it. While my Work desktop - a Windows machine even with all those (so called Crashy Updates - that I am yet to encounter) works flawlessly.
Nice review. I'm working with the non touch bar version. However I am seriously considering swapping it out for the touchbar version next week. I got a week to sleep on it.
i don't know why people always review a product over one application. ofcourse it is optimised for the apple applications but what about other things like gaming and stuff. i heard you saying apple ssd's are fast to transfer. you are paying 1499 for 'macbook pro' and only 1299 for spectre and you are getting way more. there is no pain in installing faster ssd in there. it is stupid to buy a laptop for just one application when it sucks at everything else. if you want the speed for the professional stuff buy the dell precision series. those laptops are the real meaning for the word optimization. Btw 'specs are everything' i accept it when you are talking about phones not laptops mate. Laptops are different and they are meant to do all the tasks not just one video editing software. i am am apple fan and i feel your reviews are so biased towards apple and iam so sorry to say that.
maverick7376. The price of comercial software is overpriced an apple has became a amater platform becouse of convinience factor and there i no better software than blender wich is well knovn open source software able of dooing many things including video edeting an when you use low latency kernel in linux it works realy great
I used apple for 5 years things have changed i moved to linux becuse of freedom of chociche and preformance factor apple since death of Steve Jobs isnt apple software is buggy as hell even opensoure software is better vritten thosedays and a lot has changed in 2 years time and is even improving with a fast pace comunity development wins no closed code
I don't think many people have really considered the real benefits of Thunderbolt 3, everyone's so stuck in the here and now. Pros are going to benefit from the flexibility of this laptop and what it can support externally whether it's fast SSD storage for working files and cache, or fast external graphics for crunching. Given the options the interface provides, the gates for innovation and continuity in laptops and user hardware options are finally open.
so you won't talk about the weak gpu, the lack of USB slot which forces you to use a fucking adapter to charge the phone made by the same company? ! it has last gen processor, butterfly keyboard. How do you justify that. You've just compared FCPX with Adobe PP like as if everyone edit videos using a $200 software on their MacBook pro. I expected all those points but you just keep justifying all the cons of the MacBook
@technologic, calm down. take it easy man. it's Appel's... in 2 month, everyone will forget about all this and will enjoy "paying more for less" plus all the dongles xD xD xD ps : buy MacBook pro 2015 or high end PC laptop. I'm still wondering 🤔
I'm a disappointed longtime Mac user but I'd chose this Macbook Pro vs the touch bar versions. The 2015 version is the better deal but for those who NEED a new mac laptop, this is the best bet.
technologic that's because he's a Mac fanboy who doesn't want to look biased but still does by ignoring the key features... that's why I dislike apple fans who are so hypnotised by fashion and trends they'll do anything to get this rubbish
I think that the new MacBook isn't all too bad. Yes, it is expensive and yes, it has a lack of ports but for the everyday person that isn't going to matter to much. All they are going to need is a charger and maybe the odd USB port. It is really only the TH-camrs that have truly been affected, as they will use more of the ports (such as SD card) more often for editing/uploading their videos. This is why you see so many tech TH-camrs are complaining as it will be harder and more impractical for them to make their videos. But for normal use, ports are not essential. I have an older MacBook myself, and I immediately noticed a difference in sound and picture quality. ...... and at least they kept that headphone jack!!!
see and here is where the problem is... this is the Macbook Pro. For professionals thats why its called pro. Its supposed to be for video editing/exporting as well as multi monitor setups. Because these are things professionals use. it doesn't matter what "normal use" is like because this is for professionals. Its supposed to be "pro". That implies its for the advanced user. It has absolutely nothing for the advanced user.
Good comparison - Smooth video! How's the battery life compared to the competition? As a poor CS student, I really need a laptop! Hopefully the RNG is in my favor.
***** The one I'm talking about doesn't even have a cable, it just sticks to the port, like a big USB drive, if you will. Just look for Satechi's products!
They're pushing us to a future where you won't need any because everything will be USB-C/Thunderbolt 3. Which may as well be the same as they use the same connector.
***** When the rest of the industry gets off its ass and bothers to follow. It took forever to get rid of the fucking VGA ports on PC's (and some new ones STILL come with them). USB 2.0 ports are still very common on NEW PC's too. If you're in the Apple world then you're more likely to move forward quicker anyway. All my FireWire kit was gradually replaced with Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 kit. I've already begin the gradual process of moving to USB-C/Thunderbolt 3. Things like external hard drives etc tend to have a similar shelf life to the ports they come with, either in terms of how long they actually survive or how useful the amount of storage they hold is. The smallest desktop drive I still have in regular use is a 2TB FireWire 800 drive, still going strong, and it's my Time Machine drive for my 2010 MacBook Pro. I'll certainly swap to a Thunderbolt 3 or USB-3.1 drive whenever I get a new MacBook Pro.
I don't think the spectre is the best comparison to a macbook pro. For the price of a macbook pro you could get a performance laptop that contains a dedicated GPU which would tear the macbook to shreds. Also FInal Cut X may be technically faster, but there are some pretty big limitations with what you can do with it. One reason Premiere Pro renders slower is that it is designed to do much more than Final Cut X. Premiere can utilize the other adobe suite programs seamlessly using Dynamic Link, which will end up saving you a bunch of time for motion graphics work. Please do not try to tell me that Apple Motion is as good as After Effects. It just isn't capable of 1/10th of what AE can do.
Hate? Who said anything about hate? I just think it feels very much like an ad. The channel seems devoted to all things mac. It's also one of the slickest produced product review channels I've seen.
yeah, i think he must've compare them using another "pro" software, not FCPX vs Adobe Pr. only.. because we all know that FCPX is optimized for MacOS.. then how about Adobe Illustrator? or 3D modelling software? will they run better with MBP than with spectre? because MBP wasn't made for video editors that use FCPX only..
you forgot to render the Adobe timeline. final cut pro renders automatically so this export speed comparison was unreliable. Adobe is a very nicely built program. I've used both programs for many years. export speeds definitely not conclude which laptop or program is faster
Keep going on making What's Inside videos its really funny to see what is inside things like a Macbook and to see destruction , destruction is gooood veeery good :D Please make a Video where you take apart an Apple watch . Hoping to see one. Sorry if my English isnt very good im from Germany
So you compare Final Cut Pro on Mac with Premiere on Win 10 ??? And want to have an objective conclusion regarding the Hardware specs? :D Seriously man, at least test with Premiere on the Mac as well ! All you do here is comparing 2 software products...
No his reasoning is actually pretty fair. If you were a potential mac buyer then techincally this machine should be reviewed with it's maximum potential in mind.
Brandon Teeter You still don't get it. You can't compare 2 different software products on different machines and OSs and say anything about HW-differences. The fair comparison would have been Premiere for example on both machines. Other than Final Cut Pro, every other productivity SW is better on wherever you find the better hardware. Which hass always been PC.
you compare potatoes with bananas and the bananas win because you like them better. watching this video is waste of time, but congratulation, you managed to get a video worth nothing to be watched 815000 times and commented 8915 times. I think that macbook is for you...
What about the people who never used final cut or who never will? Is sad that I'm paying a shit ton of cash for a device like that and I can't even transfer music to my iphone if I don't have that stupid adapter. Simple things like these is why is so overpriced. But anyways... People only buy this because is apple and looks cool.
You can get a USB C to lightning cable. You don't need a dongle. USB C is slowly replacing the USB A ports. Won't be long before everything runs off it and you'll be thankful if your computer has them.
Brandon Skinner the whole thing of buying a different cable is what's the problem. You've got an iPhone and a MacBook and can't even use the to together without a different cable that doesn't come with either at those price points ? That's ridiculous
My thoughts on the 13" MacBook Pro after a week! 🙌🏼
lolololoollolololool
nice vid man
Jonathan Morrison wallpaper at 0:33?
Jonathan Morrison where do you get your music from?
Jonathan Morrison it's true when you really think about it
The 12" MacBook should be called MacBook Air
The 13" MacBook Pro without the touch bar should simply be called MacBook
And the 13" and 15" variants with the touch bar should be the ones called MacBook Pros
Freddy Mazimpaka exactly
Also drop the price on the no touch bar 13.
Nah cos then people will get mad that the "Macbook Air" was downgraded, at least in terms of specs.
agreed
No, the one with a discrete gpu should be called the pro. With that these are simply high class consumer grade mid range garbage.
People on youtube only talks about video editors or photo editors. What about architecture or designing purposes like how good it is with AutoCAD?
Those programs are tailored for pc, so pc's would be the best option. Just look at how far behind rhinoceros is for mac. Also, they depend alot more on the hardware than editing software in general.
Thank you.
Ali Ozan ahaha auto cad on a Mac. Yea I tried it it's not fun.
Yeah I agree but I think Adobe's concentrating more on consumers with dedicated graphics rather iGPUs (at least it seems like it right now)
This is the problem with this comparison. @Jonathan Morris picked a test that highlighted the difference between software designed for a dGPU and software designed for an iGPU, but he ran the test using two computers with iGPUs.
oh I see, haven't thought of that my bad.
Look at the dislikes, people can't stand someone talking good things about Apple products, it hurts them
I don't know if you're blind or just stupid.
Andrew Marinho I will consider myself an Apple fanboy however I feel about Apple messed up on this MacBook Pro. For example
1) if you brought a brand-new iPhone 7 you will not be able to charge that phone using the new MacBook Pro without an adapter.
2) Also if you have a brand new iPhone 7 that came with lightning based headphones you will not be able to use those headphones with your new MacBook Pro, which means you have to carry around two different types of headphones
3) The MagSafe that the previous MacBooks had were so convenient because if somebody tripped over your cord it will not pull your almost $2000 laptop crashing to the floor
Andrew Marinho nah honey. Bias hurts us.
Andrew Marinho j
Your comparison isn't exactly an Apple's to Apple's comparison. Okay, Final cut pro is better optimized for mac, but you're taking the narrow perspective of someone who makes videos. What about several other programs where Apple doesn't make an optimized competitor. What about games? Just because the macbook performed better in one specific scenario does not mean it is the better performer overall.
abhinand1000 he specifically talked about content creators being benefited from MacBook
Also he rendered using Premiere's export instead of using Media Encoder which is really how you're supposed to do it and renders faster.
Wow, unbiased I see. No mention on the inconvenience caused due to lack of ports, c'mon.
RickstinXi fuck up racist ass
Ha ha, nice to see I'm welcomed here. Aww, thank you guys. Especially you, RickstinXi.
3-4-5 Triangle, yes, I did watch this video. I have a 2014 MacBook Pro 15 inch, and I have to carry around an ethernet adapter.
With the new one, there is no HDMI output, will be a pain if you do lot of presentations. Juggling for adapters.
And all adapters don't work the same way, it can get annoying, trust me. It will be more difficult with the new one.
Nandu Sreevalsan well that's the problem with carrying the latest while everyone is not eager to upgrade. happens
I enjoy this MacBook and this has no bias as I came from windows my whole life until now, I only switched because I needed a laptop that lasts, and windows never last for me.
hey man can you inbox me, i have some questions on getting a macbook coming from a windows guy
I agree! I’m going to buy the new MacBook Pro 13” in a month. USB C is the future and people just have to accept that.
This isn't a review, you know that, right?
Cores on the CPU doesn't really matter because as he said specs don't matter if the OS isn't optimized well enough to know how to handle them. So as he compared it to the HP laptop on paper it had better specs but the Macbook completely destroyed it because of the optimization of software and hardware. Nothing about the keyboard because there is really nothing to complain about it.
Well I know, but if somebody complains that the 13" base model MacBook ""Pro"" isn't a ""Pro"" laptop, you should mention these issues.
technologic Talks a person who uses pirated software
OK, I guess I have to try Final Cut Pro now :)
do it! haha
I've just opened two youtube videos to watch while I have a snack - yours was the next one :D
I still prefer premiere for broadcasting work. FCP is cheaper though.
even though this is possible, your problem is hardware compatibility. Also, I can confidently say that the r/w speeds will not go for the better as macs use superior SSDs that most competitors out there
For more awesome tech videos like this one, check out my channel!! I try to post two videos a week, I think you'll really like them!
As much as I understand your take on FCP. I wished you could of tossed in the export times for Premiere on the Mac.
it's slower in the macbook if you really want
Benny Banks you literally took nothing from the video.
do you think he didn't?, probably he cut out, to make his point.
I just wish they weren't SOOO damned expensive. Seriously.
...but they are gorgeous.
that truck of your is gourguses ;)
The trailer has colors of the following.
White
Blue
Red
That's the Russian flag... but ok 🇷🇺
They really aren't that expensive man.
i agree that adobe needs to up their game when it comes to optimization.
Can you do the same test with final cut pro but with the 2015 macbook pro vs 2016?
that would be great!
Yeah, Jonathan, if you could also give us some idea of the FCPX performance differences between 2016 12" MacBook (in addition to the last refresh of 13" MBPr and 15" MBPr), that would give us some idea of where this thing falls in line.
I'd like to see that as well fellas!
YEAH BUT APPLE LOGO SOOOOO *CLICKS BUY*
Wow actual iJustine.
you're furthering the stereotype that women are unintelligent.
+Thomas Lam No, she's saying she doesn't care how much money she's wasting and how good the computer is, she's buying a logo
Women who obsess over Apple products should be sent to the middle east imo.
YEAH BUT APPLE LOGO THAT DOES NOT LIGHT UP *Apple fucked up badly*
Love my mbp 2015 tho.
CRY.
Carter Johnson Please quote me where I said I was "stoked" or even excited at the very least.
I'm a fan boy. I'm proud of it and I'm a sad panda
Still think you should have done Premier vs Premier, I mean how can you do a comparison when the variable are entirely different? Everything else in the video was pretty good.
Kamran Kazemi-Far or atleast compare previous gen MacBook Pro vs current. Might as well compare compare ms paint lol
The point wasn't testing the hardware, rather the optimization between hardware and software that Apple uses. Apple is really good at that, because it's a closed ecosystem, much like the iPhone. You can squeeze out as much power as efficiently as possible
It must have lost the comparison, so he went elsewhere to boast.
and the toold inside final cut are overwhelmed by sony vegas, premiere, after effects, you have to compare final cut with movie maker not those monsters, cause in macs you have speed but cheap software
I think so too
Sahil Sanil I am working on that video right now. Check out my site for that video soon...
Chad Christian I want to see that video.
Chad Christian Cool!
i think a device such as the surface book would be a good contender for windows and then we could properly answer the question , Microsoft or Apple
Who edits video on a Laptop? That seems downright painful. All of 2016 so far for Apple has just been a complete cash grab. I'll stick with my 4790K/1080 build that didn't cost all that much more than the dual core i5 with integrated graphics but absolutely destroys it in every single way.
This video was edited on a Laptop ha.
Jonathan Morrison Do you at least plug in a mouse? I could never do that
Most people can't afford separate editing machines. You buy gear for a purpose. If you're on the go a lot AND edit, a laptop is what you get. I hate using laptops in general (without accessories), but I get why people buy them.
Esa Edvik and yet they are buying a $1500 dual core i5 based laptop? you could buy one with the same specs for under $750.
Ryan O'Neill people that only have laptops, so me and basically everyone I know irl
As much as Im a windows guy, I will admit that they do have an edge in video editing and media.
Brandon Saunders Any chance that you use the Surface Book?
roflbiscuit No, I personally have the Dell XPS 13 series with the 256 Gb SSD and the 3200 screen.
Brandon Saunders and that's it,everything else is windows. So its end up what are your needs.
Brandon Saunders no they dont...
I still haven't received the earpod you promised to give away a few months before, are you guys fraud?
Everybody in the field who knows these guys and works with them is a fraud, except for their workers and even some of them.
What happens if you charge it with two power outputs.
The world explodes taking you with it.
it opens a blackhole
It would self-Samsung.
It picks the one with highest power and charges the notebook out of that one.
Cank Gaming HD it will become note 7
Grow up.
+Tapacirer NS +1 I've used Vegas without ever needing to crack open a manual. That's how intuitive it is to use.
But it looks exactly like the MacBook Pro, so calling it MacBook is even more confusing to me.
good point :P
For more awesome tech videos like this one, check out my channel!! I try to post two videos a week, I think you'll really like them!
I agree with you on just about everything you said. I would point out the experience of editing in Premiere Pro is generally better and despite faster render times I find it faster to edit complex projects in Premiere Pro than the train wreck that is Final Cut Pro.
Definitely changed my mind on the MacBook, I heard so many bad things about it but now I understand a lot better what we're paying for
Exactly. Although there's obviously the ports issue, I think many people are just bandwagoning and saying they hate the MacBook Pros for no reason.
BUT the older macbook pro is still good. the price increase for theses are too much
***** If you go by the 13" MacBook Pro without the touch bar, it's actually less than the OLD MacBook Pro if you update the old one to 256gb of storage.
James Kim Lol! I recently sold mines haha.
#JamesKim just restart the device, i had a 2010 macbook pro it was getting really slow so i reseted the whole device and now its fast as hell
buy SSD
khairul USacc oh I forgot to mention, I did upgrade to the samsung 500 gb ssd last year. as soon as I updated, everything seemed much better, but things have been slowing down lately
Regards.
tottally agreed
Regards.
waste of money for those shitty macbook pro specs.for after effects your render times wil be in moon phases.
but but we have Motion ? magic version of after effects?
I think Jonathan missed the point on the performance aspect.Yes, we know MacOS software blows out some windows software out of the water, but this costs $1500!!! For that price, it SHOULD have an i7 CPU. And guess what? Those performance measures that you saw that MacBook get could be increased even more if it had a better processor.
Also, as usual, why does this thing cost so much and have no dedicated graphics? Only two ports?
This is basically what the 12 inch MacBook should have been last year, minus the price tag and lack of ports.
That's just in the states too. Over here in Canada, it starts at 1899. Pricing is even worse in Europe and other parts of the world.
Nice video, this guy gets it.
i know, right?
Word, never seen this guy before, but ill sub just bc of this vid alone. And I dont even own nor am I planning to get a mac.
Final Cut is optimised for some codecs, Premiere for others. The whole example given is just misrepresentation.
how many dongle need to purchase? that price.LoL......buy this really idiot and loser with nothing much to do on free time...low geek
Dave Woo where is grammar?
I was just watching the video from What's inside! Haha
Nice!
Jonathan Morrison I entered the giveaway!!
Jonathan Morrison I entered to
***** Both. haha. probs the macbook :D my computer is sooo old. i need a new one
Apple stated going wireless is the future but why the adapters and dongles? Uhm kinda confused right here.
Angelo John Villas usb c is considered the last port
I agree with you. The absence of functionality from the computer at this point in time is the reason why I won't be updating to anything newer than a 2015. At least the older macs have a headphone jack (which I use, ALOT). I also use USB-A and ethernet ports to directly get internet connection.
Simple question: is it worthy to be called pro? Set this aside lets have the one with the touchbar is it worthy to be called pro?
Or is it pro dongles, pro thinness, pro price, pro portability (though i think with the added dongles its a bit uhhmm) but looking forward it is:
Pro performance no doubt yes, pro screen yes, pro build quality yes ( though it should be necessary pro or not pro)
Not hating i use apple products too its just that i am having thoughts on the word pro for the latest iteration of their devices.
Or is it a strategic move?
pro performance is actually a no also, the 2015 macbook pros(13 inch) that are $200 cheaper have a 35% faster cpu
***** stop doing that pls
camicazi oh wow so the added 200 is for the screen improvements only?
Always at a super premium.
but I do wanna see how fast it exports out in premiere :(
What about comparing the Final Cut Pro processing on the 2016 MacBook Pro with the previous to see if the performance it's night and day light Apple said at the event and to see if it's worth the upgrade
Jon hit the nail on the head with the naming scheme. It's a great laptop but it shouldn't be billed as Pro in this configuration
User of both mac and pc here. Mac better at graphics/music, pc better at gaming/productivity - nothing new here. But you only compare one aspect - I'm sure many would love to see the other comparison as well. More people probably do gaming/business analytics work than graphics/music.
I don't edit video, hence the MacBook pro 2016 sucks, for me as well as most people.
Then why are you even thinking of Macbook Pro 2016 get the older one if you really want more ports and macOS or get a Razer or Dell laptop with Windows
CynoNex idiot
Why does it suck for most people? Most people use safari and word
I would personally get a Mac for video editing. For all the rest though, PC is better for sure.
You guys don't understand it, in a couple of years everybody is gonna thank Apple for this move.
In raw CPU performance, I'm waiting for other tests.
firstly thank you this is the first time i have seen someone being fair on the good and bad. excellent comparison aswell.
People say Apple products are underpowered, but they're so much faster and more powerful than their competitors.
In what usecase?
TopToad they ARE underpowered. They just have their software better optimized
TopToad I have Mac book, I don't see the speed off it
+Tasso gamer Not to mention we console players have to pay to play online
I think you didn't show the export times from the mac using premiere because the Spectre crushed it..
ThatRcThing but you can edit videos way faster on a mac with Final Cut Pro
ThatRcThing but if your're buying a MacBook pro, why wouldn't you be using final cut pro....
ThatRcThing did you even watch the video? He exclaimed why he didn't use Premier on the MacBook.
I don´t think you get it! :-)
I actually want to get this MacBook. I don't have a problem with Thunderbolt 3.
someone's gotta crack the code here
how is apple doing magic?
comparitively low specs high performance
mac os is way smooother but that big difference in performance test against a higher spec notebook is mindblowing
apple products always optimize stuff with any specs.
hope windows could do something as well too
like if u agree
This has way too much in common with 12 inch MacBook. For me, not worth the money at all. Also, I already miss MagSafe.
Eric Pellegrini it should've been, lol!
Eric Pellegrini totally agree.. this comparison is just like :
"my new macbook pro can run FIFA 17 on 70FPS, and the HP Spectre is running Battlefield 1 on 50FPS.. so macbook wins. because who cares? I never played battlefield"
Eric Pellegrini, I don't think it was biased at all. OSX is known for being extremely optimized for video editing programs like Final Cut Pro.
well he stated that he used Final Cut Pro to show how optimised it is with MBP's hardware.
Still going with the HP Spectre x360 when I go to college. Apple's a dead company to me and I'm ditching my iPhone 6 the second I'm able to do so.
Ditched my macbook for a surface pro and iPhone for an android. Never looked back. Never trust a brand that leaves out functions for slimness.
+asemnafiz I'll take them Apple products off your hands
How fool u r?
Fame Little
Sold already lol.
Jonathan, what type of mic are you using? The sound quality is epic!
You are making apple proud for increasing price for there products.
If you are getting a computer for schoolwork or editing you should get a macbook. If you want the best all rounder for everything and upgradability get a pc.
More specifically: The New Razer Blade Sealth
Isaac if you want an overpriced sh*t, get a macbook
If you want to have problems not knowing how to use your computer get a pc with linux
If you want to be a winner get a windows pc ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
That comment is directed at gamers. If you're a college or even highschool student you'd be better off with a macbook. It's better in nearly every way.(Not spec-wise but performance wise)
I'd rather get a Surface Book.
Mehmet Efe Akça No it's not. Windows laptops can do everything basic that a MacBook csn
Thanks!
Just out here chilling and living with a 15 inch 2013 Macbook Pro Retina. 😎
You just represent every Apple user cliché, always bragging to justify the price
***** Where did I brag and justify about the price? I merely stated that I'm having a good time with my current Macbook Pro and see no use in the new Macbook.
I know, I wanted to keep mine 2013 too but the bastards stole from me; I have no choice but buy a new one...
Armen Staubach Aah that's fucked up. Just buy a 2014 or 15 model! Those have different ports and still run smoothly as ever.
Samuël Hitijahubessy does your 2013 still run good and smooth?
I still think there are better options than the Macbook Pro/Final Cut pro in the PC laptop market.
you are using final cut pro (apple software) on a WINDOWS laptop , then compare it to a macbook pro??? ... thats some BS unfair comparision lol
compare windows movie maker on the HP VS final cut pro on mac ,
But that's the whole point of an ecosystem.
So you are literaly screwed by apple that says "buy our shit, or use other software, because we make it slow as fuck on other systems."
There is no doubt they could have optimized their software for windows, but "screw you users, go buy some overpriced laptops"
Just to be clear, Apple's Final Cut Pros ***isn't available*** on Windows. Not available.
Final Cut Pro on Mac vs. Premiere Pro Windows
Ex2Bot - Apple Fanbot comparing 2 different softwares for 2 diff OS... well ain't that "fair"

Hey man, new here and thinking of getting a macbook pro for university! Loved the review and the back to school vid you did! Keep up the good work!
haters will hate. Apple haters will always hate until they got their hands on an Apple product.
I've had apple products before I knew what good technology was
My first smartphone was an iPhone 5 and I hated it. It was so simple and overall a bad experience. I also have an iPad air that I got as a gift. I owned and own Apple products, yet still really dislike the entire experience of using one.
lol, troll
I hate it coz everytime the Mac has an OS update, I have to wait for Matlab to issue an update to make It work with it. While my Work desktop - a Windows machine even with all those (so called Crashy Updates - that I am yet to encounter) works flawlessly.
Try hackintosh hp vs macbook pro final cut pro render time
It's $1633 after taxes which is Actual cost. Point is, It's WAY overpriced!!
Apple stuff always overprice, and the macbook was much more expansive in the old day
Macbook is more overpriced NOW than in the past.
Yes, thats the point, it's becoming More and More Overpriced and people are pissed OFF!
Andrew Debasque except these TH-camrs who will and do buy anything Apple releases heheheheh clicks clicks clicks
It's 2017 and there are still people who just don't buy their shit used from amazon? 😂 you're ripping yourself off.
Nice review. I'm working with the non touch bar version.
However I am seriously considering swapping it out for the touchbar version next week. I got a week to sleep on it.
They take 2600 pounds from me and give me Intel Iris Graphics?Nice job Apple!
i don't know why people always review a product over one application. ofcourse it is optimised for the apple applications but what about other things like gaming and stuff. i heard you saying apple ssd's are fast to transfer. you are paying 1499 for 'macbook pro' and only 1299 for spectre and you are getting way more. there is no pain in installing faster ssd in there. it is stupid to buy a laptop for just one application when it sucks at everything else. if you want the speed for the professional stuff buy the dell precision series. those laptops are the real meaning for the word optimization. Btw 'specs are everything' i accept it when you are talking about phones not laptops mate. Laptops are different and they are meant to do all the tasks not just one video editing software. i am am apple fan and i feel your reviews are so biased towards apple and iam so sorry to say that.
Compare to system 76 with linux :D for that price
www.lwks.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=99&Itemid=210 ekvialetn video editor for linux
maverick7376. The price of comercial software is overpriced an apple has became a amater platform becouse of convinience factor and there i no better software than blender wich is well knovn open source software able of dooing many things including video edeting an when you use low latency kernel in linux it works realy great
Try to beat ffmpg rendering and exporting with finalcut :D
I used apple for 5 years things have changed i moved to linux becuse of freedom of chociche and preformance factor apple since death of Steve Jobs isnt apple software is buggy as hell even opensoure software is better vritten thosedays and a lot has changed in 2 years time and is even improving with a fast pace comunity development wins no closed code
Hey, who knows, maybe that could be reversed in the future?
I don't think many people have really considered the real benefits of Thunderbolt 3, everyone's so stuck in the here and now. Pros are going to benefit from the flexibility of this laptop and what it can support externally whether it's fast SSD storage for working files and cache, or fast external graphics for crunching. Given the options the interface provides, the gates for innovation and continuity in laptops and user hardware options are finally open.
pro or not to pro... that is the question
Just dongle it.
socialillz pro stands for proprietary (according to Apple) Lol
so you won't talk about the weak gpu, the lack of USB slot which forces you to use a fucking adapter to charge the phone made by the same company? ! it has last gen processor, butterfly keyboard. How do you justify that. You've just compared FCPX with Adobe PP like as if everyone edit videos using a $200 software on their MacBook pro. I expected all those points but you just keep justifying all the cons of the MacBook
@technologic, calm down. take it easy man. it's Appel's... in 2 month, everyone will forget about all this and will enjoy "paying more for less" plus all the dongles xD xD xD
ps : buy MacBook pro 2015 or high end PC laptop.
Spartan Jelly02 😂😂😂💯💯👌👌
see and here is where the problem is... this is the Macbook Pro.
One you go Apple, you don't look back. I like to keep an open mind but unless I'm into gaming I'm sticking with Apple.
That is a GREAT video and I agree with you of ditching the PRO name of this model.
Moh'd Tawalbeh nice tailosive shirt
apple just keeps pushing us toward the future, infinite adapters.......
Wrong. It is the future of ports, but others have not switched yet. Within a year, we'll have plenty of devices with USB-C/Thunderbolt 3.
Just get a single 8 port adapter, its not a big deal...

When the rest of the industry gets off its ass and bothers to follow.
Is this an ad?
Phil Hunter Is it? There's benchmarks showing performance. I don't think it's an add.
I was wondering the same
It's called "facts". If he is spewing facts, there is no reason to hate him.
Hate? Who said anything about hate? I just think it feels very much like an ad. The channel seems devoted to all things mac. It's also one of the slickest produced product review channels I've seen.
yeah, i think he must've compare them using another "pro" software, not FCPX vs Adobe Pr. only.. because we all know that FCPX is optimized for MacOS.. then how about Adobe Illustrator? or 3D modelling software? will they run better with MBP than with spectre? because MBP wasn't made for video editors that use FCPX only..
hi
hello
Justice Tankson hi
TEAM CRISPY ASSEMBLE!
you forgot to render the Adobe timeline. final cut pro renders automatically so this export speed comparison was unreliable. Adobe is a very nicely built program. I've used both programs for many years. export speeds definitely not conclude which laptop or program is faster
So good! See you next time Apple comes out with another product worthy of destroying:)
What's Inside? Lol
Keep going on making What's Inside videos its really funny to see what is inside things like a Macbook and to see destruction , destruction is gooood veeery good :D Please make a Video where you take apart an Apple watch . Hoping to see one. Sorry if my English isnt very good im from Germany
Lmao That Is So True Tho
So I'll Be Waiting For That Video
I really liked both of the videos
This price is still far from justified.
Which hass always been PC.
zeus1117 He isn't talking about hardware differences. He is talking about the product.
Brandon Teeter No, he talks about Software performance.
Brandon Teeter If OSX would be standalone like Windows 10, nobody would buy apple hardware..
This was fantastic man, thanks for pushing aside the surface level bulls***. There really is no bad hardware, only unoptimized software.
This was a really good in depth review.
Jonathan Morrison - Apple user in denial.
you know what ruins the 2016 Macbook Pro for me...
apple
Ya same, I spilled apple juice on mine and now it's ruined
haha
Can't wait for the Touch Bar video. Very interested to see those reviews come in.
this guy is such an apple fanboy
you compare potatoes with bananas and the bananas win because you like them better. watching this video is waste of time, but congratulation, you managed to get a video worth nothing to be watched 815000 times and commented 8915 times. I think that macbook is for you...
abudaabadi yep, total clickbait!
Luis Ortiz then you don't buy a MacBook Pro you dumbass. Go buy a chrome book. Common sense

Some people claim the macbooks have poor ventilation, so maybe you could test thermal throttling
vent
lets just say that the hp has even worse ventilation.
So yeah.
