My Grandma always mixed the carrots and radish seeds together as when we would pull mature radishes it would create space for the slower carrots. Just an FYI

It helps break the crust of soil for the carrots as well if you have any clay in your dirt

And to add to that it helps spread the seed out if you mix a couple handfuls of dry sand in with your seeds, it’s so much easier to sow them and they are spaced out :)

@SeriousName If you don't like radishes, why not space with baby greens instead? You'll like what you pull out, and you'll have space for the carrot tops, even if you're not affecting the underground space. or if you want some underground space made, plant beets with the carrots, and pull them for baby beet greens

      @alyselaurel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@SeriousName I'm not a fan of radishes either, but I recently roasted them in the oven with oil and salt and it was magical. They were so similar to potatoes.

We used to buy chickens for 25 cents from a hatchery near our house, when I was a kid. (That was a long time ago) At first their combs were pale and floppy and they had to learn to scratch. They got healthy and grew feathers. They lived and laid eggs! Then, after a while they would just drop dead, but we always felt good that we had given them the gift of sunshine and the soft breezes.

"They will be spoiled before too long." :) Yes they will. I got some of those factory hens and they're turning into very nice girls who lay lots of big brown eggs. No open toed shoes in with them and they're too rough eating out of your hand, but they will pretty themselves up in no time. Enjoy watching them improve!

I love how you talk about how you have an employee and that it hasn't always been this way. I get discouraged a lot by "homestead" youtubers because I always think "HOW IN THE WORLD CAN THEY DO ALL THIS?!" I have to always remind myself that most of these youtubers (including yourself) have both parents at home. My husband works "off farm." I'm the farmer and baby raiser so I have to be realistic with what I can accomplish

The last time we had chickens here on the farm a chicken disapeared then turned up with 21 chicks walking down the middle of the driveway of our farm that at the time had give or take 40 farm cats all around it was a mad rush to get them scooped up and penned up safe before the cats discovered them. Miraculously none became cat snacks

Hello Jess and family.....I rescued three hens from slaughter here in the uk last September. I live in a tiny end of terrace two bed home and the hens have a third of our garden as their run. They have laid all through the winter and are really tame. They do have to be told to go to bed though as they have no natural instincts whatsoever!!! I am lucky to have the use of two allotments and we are still allowed to go at the moment. Having my husband home has been a bonus as he helped me plant all the potatoes and onions yesterday. We are also planting as much veg into the back garden inches we are completely locked down. Stay well and safe. Love to you and allow your family from the UK.xxxxxx

I went in my uncle's commercial chickenhouse when I was a teen and words can't describe the horror. He told me the first task every day was to walk through and remove the dead ones. I am thankful I experienced it, though, because it has helped shape my beliefs in what agriculture should not be.

All your videos are gold. Period. But, I do want to say that from 11:55 to 16:00 is some of the most practical and inspiring information (and anecdotes) that I - a new homesteader just entering the second year - have found. Nothing I've read and nothing I've seen and nothing anyone else has shared has been as helpful and motivating to push forward than those four minutes.
To other viewers: NEVER let anyone discourage you from your lists - what needed to be done yesterday lists, what needs to be done today lists, what needs to be done tomorrow lists, what needs to be done throughout the year lists, what you want to have accomplished in five years list.
    - - - - -
And finally, who the hell gives the Roots and Refuge videos thumbs down? Why not just move on and find something you do like rather than sitting on your lazy butt trying to knock other people's hard work and passion down? Shame on you.

I'm doing some video catch up today and watching this in the end of July. Your chickens are beautiful and I'm sure those new chickens that looked so sad, in March when this was filmed, are probably now very happy, beautiful chickens too.

I ordered 19 chickens from Murray McMurray. The delivery date is in July. I’m so excited! I got 2/3 layers and 1/3 meat birds.

Omg... making me tear up for the chickens. I adopted 4 girls no longer laying. Sometimes it's a mental thing they give that brings joy and not physical thing like eggs. They are helping with the bugs.

I did the same thing in CA! I had gotten alots of dirt and soil and bricks for more raised beds. I even have eggs in the incubator and some chicks hatching out. We still can't buy chickens in California. So lots of projects to keep busy. Even got 3 new kitchen to be barn cats. Kids are loving that.

I can't tell you how much I learn from you, Jess and Miah. Your advise about a 5 year plan has helped me so much. Although I will never have a homestead as large as yours, I do have almost an acre which was a blank canvas, and a coop with 6 hens (the only livestock we're allowed where we live). I live in Wisconsin and work outside my home full time so the actual time I have to get projects done in which the weather is favorable is small. I used to bite off more than I could chew in the excitement of the spring, and it set me up for failure. Now I make a list of everything I'd love to do (expand the vegetable garden, plant some berry bushes, build a greenhouse) and check off the things I think I can accomplish this year, then cut one more job off of my list for the year. When I start feeling like I'm not getting enough done, I try to remember it's a 5 year plan even though the scale is so much smaller. It's made me so much happier, and I get more accomplished because I'm able to see my accomplishments, rather than the things I haven't gotten done.

We just got meat birds and are building the same tractor from justin. We loved his last design and it works great when paired with the P1 fence. Rotational grazing is such a game-changer. We learned so much through Justin's permaculture chickens. I am so excited for you guys!

Aw those poor chickens have no idea how happy they will be, it is sad but also so great that you have adopted them. Your list of projects sound like mine. I am putting up a whiteboard so I can prioritise as at the moment I am a bit overwhelmed, so am doing nothing!! But I am getting antsy to get going so the board goes up tomorrow
