The cost of goods sold, or COGS, is the accumulated cost of producing a product, which can include the cost and transportation of raw materials, labor needed to manufacture the goods and factory overhead. COGS is important in establishing healthy profit margins, driving decision-making that cuts costs, determining gross profit as well as net income, and ultimately, increasing profitability.
