"You are your father's daughter Stubbornness and pride Mind what he says but remember You may hear a voice inside And if the voice starts to whisper To follow the farthest star Moana, that voice inside is Who you are" I want to instill this lesson in my children.
Kind of a sad song if you think about it. Moana is always chasing her dreams to explore and head into the ocean, but her family tells her no and that she must conform to the life and responsibilities she will face in the island. Till the end of the song she drops those dreams and settles to the life she will have. This song makes me think about what happiness is and if one could find happiness in conforming to the life one has. I also think about how some people settle in life and give up on dreams, and how others continue chasing those dreams. Some achieve those dreams and others don’t. Do dreams lead to happiness? This song has me really thinking about where I am and if I am even happy here. Perhaps in time I will learn to be happy where I am. Or perhaps that voice inside of me will tell me where I am to be.
What I love about Chief Tui is just how different he is from other Disney Dad's. He doesn't want Moana to leave, but it's not for selfish reasons. Unlike King Triton (in the original), we actually SEE and understand why he doesn't want Moana to go. Even though she's pushed to accept that this is her life like Jasmine and a lot of other heroines, he's not trying to make things miserable for her and he genuinely loves her C:.
Gabriel C Media YESS!! I also love how she actually tries really hard to follow his advice and be what she's "meant to be" and is actually pretty competent! So many other Disney characters are either awful at what they're "supposed to do" or they just straight up nope out.
Gabriel C Media Triton wants to keep Ariel there because his wife was killed by a human ship. Chief Tui wants to keep Moana away because his friend was drowned by the sea... I don't see the difference.
Alora Marie That's something they added in a sequel though. In the original movie, Triton doesn't have any reasoning behind keeping Ariel at home other than a vague "it's dangerous"
The part I love about this is "Mind what he says but remember, you may hear a voice inside" they aren't saying "disobey your father and follow your heart" they have the movie play out in a very respect way, and I love that.
Ateli Makahili - it's not just Pasifika culture which is all about respecting one's parents and elders. It is all the tribal cultures of this planet, Asians etc. including the white people (even though maybe other tribes don't agree it is true and believe that white people are individualistic or whatever). The question is: when is it logical and when is it based on fear? For the Jewish tribes for example, they respect elders because they fear Yahweh (a kind of "Te Ka"). But we ALL hear that voice inside, which goes deeper than our cultures. And this voice relates to all the tribes of the planet, as one. This voice says we don't have to fear punishment. It is the young who are supposed to bring new ways of seeing into the world - not be forced to conform to the society of their parents. Disney movies are about this trans-tribal connection made possible through brave people who cross the boundaries of their culture, and go beyond. Finding a deeper tradition (exploration) that is forgotten. It's not about glorifying the separate tribes and what their beliefs are, but about precisely those people from those tribes who do not conform. This song is humorous for that reason.... "Who needs a new song, this old one's all we need" :D
I swear half of the songs on this soundtrack always bring me to tears with just how beautiful they are. Absolutely brilliant writing that taps right into the guts of who we are as humans.
As a proud Polynesian myself...this movie hit me right in the heart. Cinematics, the story and the way they presented our culture. It was heartwarming and beautiful to say the least.
LYRICS: Moana, make way, make way Moana, it's time you knew The village of Motunui is all you need The dancers are practicing They dance to an ancient song (Who needs a new song? This old one's all we need) This tradition is our mission And Moana, there's so much to do (make way) Don't trip on the taro root, that's all you need We share everything we make (we make) We joke and we weave our baskets (ah-ha) The fishermen come back from the sea I wanna see Don't walk away Moana, stay on the ground now Our people will need a chief and there you are There comes a day When you're gonna look around And realize happiness is where you are Consider the coconut (the what?) Consider its tree We use each part of the coconut, that's all we need We make our nets from the fibers The water is sweet inside We use the leaves to build fires We cook up the meat inside Consider the coconuts The trunks and the leaves (hah) The island gives us what we need And no one leaves That's right, we stay We're safe and we're well provided And when we look to the future, there you are You'll be okay In time you'll learn just as I did You must find happiness right where you are I like to dance with the water The undertow and the waves The water is mischievous, ha! I like how it misbehaves The village may think I'm crazy Or say that I drift too far But once you know what you like, well, there you are You are your father's daughter, stubbornness and pride Mind what he says but remember You may hear a voice inside And if the voice starts to whisper To follow the farthest star Moana, that voice inside is who you are We make our nets from the fibers The water is sweet inside We use the leaves to build fires And cook up the meat inside The village believes in us (hah, that's right) The village believes (hah) The island gives us what we need And no one leaves So here I'll stay My home, my people beside me And when I think of tomorrow, there we are I'll lead the way I'll have my people to guide me We'll build our future together where we are 'Cause every path leads you back to where you are You can find happiness right where you are Where you are
It may seem weird that an entire village is trying to convince Moana to be happy on the island where she is, and they all instantly become voyagers at the end of the film, but my headcanon is that they weren't just trying to convince Moana to be happy with staying on the island, they were trying to convince themselves as well. They all wanted to leave, but the villagers were loyal enough to the chief to stay on the island, even though they didn't want to.
@@ChipNoir That is true. Plus, I think there were just 2 different truths. They had to explore, but they also had to stay together. Remember, they left together, not as just one person. In the end, it wasn't Moana leaving the village, it was the village leaving WITH Moana.
Well, Moana had just sailed away, had an adventure, saved the world, and returned alive. Whatever other reservations her people may have had, Moana had just proven that voyaging wasn't inherently deadly. And the only reason she was able to save the world at all was by defying her people's tradition, which would naturally shake their faith in the idea of permanent isolation.
The thing is, they probably didn't know they were voyagers. According to Moana's grandma, it was their ancestors who stopped voyaging because of the darkness that prevented their own people from coming back whenever they sailed. The people probably didn't know about the canoes and boats. The chief oppressed his people because of the accident he was involved before so.
Felt the grandmother spoke on a whole new level. People think I'm crazy, or that I drift too far. But I know I what I like, and well. Here I am. Whole song speaks on that level. I tried being happy as I was, but then I accepted it, and I couldn't find happiness where I was so I walked away
You are your father's daughter... Stubbornness and pride Mind what he says but remember you may hear a voice inside. That part speaks to what I'm dealing with personally
i like how this isnt the cliche "oh i dont want to stay here i want to do my own things no one understands me" storyline, moana actually tries to stay there and be chief, she actually wants to. alot of movies dont do that
That's something I really love about this movie, even though Moana is called to the ocean, she grows to respect her island and the elders and the villagers. She learns to be happy where she is, even if she knows there is happiness elsewhere
Viimine yeah, it’s about finding your own place. It wasn’t that her Father wanted to be hard on her or anything. He feared for her. He went to the sea and it didn’t go well for him he didn’t want to lose her. At the end he’s very proud of her.
Alya Emily - she doesn't "learn to be happy where she is", she just forgets momentarily about the voice inside. The problem is that yes, indeed, happiness is where you are but only WITH the Knowledge.... which she doesn't have yet. She must travel on a journey of discovery, then return with the Knowledge, which then brings change of perspective for all. They expect to have happiness based on forgetting, and this is not the true Tradition. Their true identity is that of Explorers.
I know this song is for children and all but this song gives me such good vibes I personally love this song so much it just gives me good memories when listening to this.
It initially gave me good vibes till I gave it some thought. It's actually a sad tale. Especially the part where her father says "in time you'll learn just as I did". That right there is a sad story in one line
Moana is an iconic princess. She actually does something for her people, like Mulan another iconic role. She stands up for herself and learns who she is. She is amazing. She doesn't need a man to figure out who she is. She learns by herself and with the help of her people. ALSO THE SOUNDTRACK IS AMAZING BC LIN AND HER VOICE ACTOR IS SO CUTE AND WONDERFUL AND DESERVES THE WORLD I LOVE AULILDKWLDNQK
well Maui did kind of save her ass a bajillion times so she would've probably died without a man (DEMI GOD). lol Nothing wrong with needing help sometimes, I wish Disney would make a movie about that instead of pushing all this "Women can do anything a man can do!" cause for like 90% of women, we cant lol
I just want to add to your list there. Belle and Merida (in my opinion) are also pretty iconic. Maybe not to the same scale as Moana and Mulan, but for the time it was made, Belle was pretty revolutionary. I totally agree about the soundtrack, it's one of my favorites :)
All considerations of the coconut aside, I love the message the song sends. Although Moana's dad kept pushing for her to stay on the island her whole life, he isn't necessarily a "villain" in the movie since he's stopping Moana on her journey. Not only were his fears pretty justified, theres's also still truth behind the idea of finding happiness where you are. The whole movie is centered Moana's destiny and part of it is having to leave the island to discover her inner self. We can't always stay at the same place in life, especially if doing so is not meant for us or it won't make us happy. But sometimes you don't have to go on any sort of journey because what you're searching for or what you think is missing in your life is already there and you just haven't found/appreciated it yet. People do indeed find happiness by simply being where they are in life and that's okay too. Also, I remember seeing someone else point out that Moana's dad says "you *must* find happiness right where you are" while Moana says "you *can* find happiness right where you are". I love how just that one word change shows the difference between how Moana and her dad interpret the same idea of finding happiness.
I absolutely adore Grandma Tala "I like to dance with the water, the undertow and the waves, the water is mischievous, ha! I like how it misbehaves, the village may think I'm crazy, or say that I drift too far, but once you know what you like, well there you are." she is so cool, she reminded me of my great grandmother who was very unique and she didn't care what people said about her.

Can't even listen to this without shedding tears, always makes me think of my baby niece and how her and her daddy(my brother) always sat in front of the TV together singing this 💙
This song and the scenes are literally so deep. Showcases how the optimism and exploration melts away for most people as we get older and see the logic of responsibility, safety, and "building a life where youre at" The dynamic with the grandma and Moana and even her quick look back to the sea and her grandmother as she's trying to accept her life and responsibility as an adult but still having that curious spark never having left. Even the dads line "you'll learn just as I did" implying he was once young and curious too but gradually gave way to responsibility and "safer choices" as he became an adult. The way they use this to showcase and reveal the experiences and personalities of the characters is a beautiful set up for the rest of the film.
a lot of disney movie characters are missing their mothers, since Walt Disney's own mother died from carbon monoxide poisoning from the new house Walt bought her shortly after his success in the film industry. He felt responsible for his mother's death, and yeah... idk if this is 100% true, just something i read somewhere
I love how Moana wasn't rebellious and wanted to just not listen and do her own thing for herself. SHE was kind and unselfish willing to give up something she loved for the good of her entire island. That's what a good leader does. And I love how in the song you see the maturity of Moana. She was like she would stay with her people with her and was geuininely okay with it and excited to do her best and lead. I love it and how it shows in a way how it's okay to transition into adult responsibility. It can have its own happiness to it and you can find it still even if it isn't your exact dream and maybe eventually your dreams will make room for themselves.
You are your father's daughter Stubbornness and pride Mind what he says but remember You may hear a voice inside And if the voice starts to whisper To follow the farthest star Moana, that voice inside is Who you are *Me literally crying*

Exactly. I think in the age of social media and fake influencers promoting unrealistic lavish lifestyles, a message like "be happy with where you are / what you have" deserves to be spread more widely.
Fun Fact: Temuera Morrison, who voiced Chief Tui (but when singing, voiced by Christopher Jackson) was the actor and voice of Jango Fett, Boba Fett and all the clone troopers in Episode II and III in the Star Wars' Prequel Trilogy and for the video games these characters appeared in. Just cool to know that Moana's dad was a lethal bounty hunter in a galaxy far, far away.
This song is so amazing to me. Because it's a song about your responsibility to the people around you, not just yourself. Even if she doesn't like it, her people need her and she decides to help-despite her passions, despite her curiosity. Sometimes, you can't follow your dreams. This song tells us that you don't have to in order to have a happy life. I really wish this movie had been about learning to live with what you have and making the best out of it, because it's something that isn't represented much in children's media, which is where it's needed most.
I actually like that instead of browbeating the audience towards one extreme or the other, this movie gives us a more nuanced view. If you never strive for something better or more sometimes and ALWAYS settle for what's there, then you risk complacency, which ironically could mean that instead of appreciating what you have, you take it for granted. Plus then you have no ambition or motivation to try to improve yourself or to make things better for others around you, even if said circumstances are harmful. On the other hand, if you're always chasing more and are NEVER happy with what you have, then you probably won't be happy with whatever you get next. You might even do more harm than good and regret it after all is said and done (be careful what you wish for). Neither extreme is healthy and what I love is that some important lessons throughout this movie are that 1. There's a time and a place for both; one doesn't have to outweigh the other and neither are always bad or always good. 2. Life is generally about striking a healthy balance between the two. It's not always easy but ultimately it's arguably the most satisfying in the end.
I think I finally get the understand the undertone of this song, be content with what you have and don't go looking for adventure or what you are supposed to do because it will find you in its own time.

Guy_With_A_Stick Except 90% of the action takes place in the middle of the ocean and the ocean itself is a sentient character and Maui shapeshifts every twelve seconds and that would be hella difficult to do on stage?
Guy_With_A_Stick all the transformations could be done with projection. And if a broadway production way possible for the little mermaid. It must be possible for moana! 🙌🏻💪🏼
Clorox Bleach I personally love the soundtrack for his own sake - not caring about the one who wrote it... But I admit that Hamilton, even if I don't know him before (but I do now thanks to thousands of comments referring to Linn), is really nice^^

yraco my sister kept insulting the movie, dad slept through it. i was the only one crying my heart out :))) famillies can make you feel horible to go to the movies
Never had anything like that myself but my dad wasn't very happy when I suggested to watch it, I think it was partly because he already wanted to watch something else while I wanted to watch this with the rest of my family and that he thought it was "for girls" or something like that because it has a female lead and her name is the title. I'd just say ignore your sister and from my experience dads don't seem to be the best in movies anyway. (Also nice name)
I always thought they had a good argument for moana to stay. They needed her to be the new chief and there was plenty good reason for her to stay there. They weren't just holding her back to piss off the viewers, they had an actual reason for once.
I mean how can you even argue about her father's reasons for worrying about his daughter going to the ocean? It is where his best friend died. There are also monsters lurking beneath... considering those coconut pirates... I wont let my daughter go near the ocean too... :d
It was a breath of fresh air to me that a movie actually had it so that the differing opinions of the protagonist aren't ridiculously extreme. It was very simple that the father needed her to be the chief and that the water was too dangerous to sail on. She's his daughter regardless, he wants to protect her. Neither he nor her is wrong in their opinions and it's nice that the movie had it that way.
The part where younger Moana says, “I wanna see,” refering to the world outside her island breaks my heart for some reason. I think they did an amazing job in hiring Lin-Manuel Miranda to write the music for this movie, he is simply amazing and did an awesome job.
Phillipa Soo's voice at around 2:49. It's so awesome to see parts of the Hamilton cast in this movie. That's one of the parts that I love of this film.
If only people would read the additional info provided below these videos, if you click on "SHOW MORE" u will see the people who perform this song. Phillipa Soo is not listed, apparently she is in the movie as a villager but not in this song.
The fact u were surrounded by weak women/dumb society does not mean all are like that. @Tommy Hopps check planet and places around u will see many examples.
I think this is disney's first anti "more" song. it's like "nah i actually love my home even though i happen to be somewhat different and I actually don't want to abandon everything i've ever known and loved on a whim...you know...like a rational human being." I think the only other kid's film to really do this was how to train your dragon- which is also a great movie
Rebecca Robinson, it's the culture of taking only what you need. Take care of the land and ocean, and it will take care of you. The Polynesian culture is all about that, but western culture is the polar opposite, hence why it's different to most.
what about Tiana. She didn't want to leave her home she only left to turn into a human so she could get the restaurant she wanted which was near her home.
"I like to dance with the water, the undertow and the waves. The water is mischievous, I like how it misbehaves. The village may think I'm crazy or say that I drift too far, but once you know what you like, well there you are." Best part💖 Ps: Never consider coconuts
Kenya Carter I love how she sings: "You are your father's daughter Stubbornness and pride Mind what he says but remember You may hear a voice inside And if the voice starts to whisper To follow the farthest star Moana, that voice inside is who you are" almost like one's own grandmother giving you advice to follow your dreams ❤️
DUDE I LISTEN TO THE WHOLE SONG JUST TO GET TO THAT PART, definitly the best part, and it contrasts so well with the rest of the song... I wish it was a bit longer :(

“I wanna see”
Damn nigga it ain’t that deep

@@anouymous3688 it’s always that deep 😔
Also told her to consider the coconut
But we didn't know that in the original movie ^_^
Yeahh! she truly tries to do the right thing and accept what she's supposed to do. It's so different from a lot of other princesses ^-^
The part I love about this is "Mind what he says but remember, you may hear a voice inside" they aren't saying "disobey your father and follow your heart" they have the movie play out in a very respect way, and I love that.
Yes I love that. Because our culture is all about respecting your parents and elders. And they showed it through this movie I love it.
When we respect our heart's calling, everyone benefits.
+Ateli Makahili Truth sista 👏👏Respect and family are huge parts of Pasifika culture
Have you considered the COCONUT
Moana: I wanna be ocean. :(
Father: NO, BE THE FUCKING COCONUT

LYRICS:
Moana, make way, make way
Moana, it's time you knew
The village of Motunui is all you need
The dancers are practicing
They dance to an ancient song
(Who needs a new song? This old one's all we need)
This tradition is our mission
And Moana, there's so much to do (make way)
Don't trip on the taro root, that's all you need
We share everything we make (we make)
We joke and we weave our baskets (ah-ha)
The fishermen come back from the sea
I wanna see
Don't walk away
Moana, stay on the ground now
Our people will need a chief and there you are
There comes a day
When you're gonna look around
And realize happiness is where you are
Consider the coconut (the what?)
Consider its tree
We use each part of the coconut, that's all we need
We make our nets from the fibers
The water is sweet inside
We use the leaves to build fires
We cook up the meat inside
Consider the coconuts
The trunks and the leaves (hah)
The island gives us what we need
And no one leaves
That's right, we stay
We're safe and we're well provided
And when we look to the future, there you are
You'll be okay
In time you'll learn just as I did
You must find happiness right where you are
I like to dance with the water
The undertow and the waves
The water is mischievous, ha! I like how it misbehaves
The village may think I'm crazy
Or say that I drift too far
But once you know what you like, well, there you are
You are your father's daughter, stubbornness and pride
Mind what he says but remember
You may hear a voice inside
And if the voice starts to whisper
To follow the farthest star
Moana, that voice inside is who you are
We make our nets from the fibers
The water is sweet inside
We use the leaves to build fires
And cook up the meat inside
The village believes in us (hah, that's right)
The village believes (hah)
The island gives us what we need
And no one leaves
So here I'll stay
My home, my people beside me
And when I think of tomorrow, there we are
I'll lead the way
I'll have my people to guide me
We'll build our future together where we are
'Cause every path leads you back to where you are
You can find happiness right where you are
Where you are

Martín Tena me too 😃😃😃😃I saw it like a day after it came out
Martín Tena I agree! This movie was very touching and incredible, saw it the day it came out :)
But did you consider the coconut?
Yeah
It may seem weird that an entire village is trying to convince Moana to be happy on the island where she is, and they all instantly become voyagers at the end of the film, but my headcanon is that they weren't just trying to convince Moana to be happy with staying on the island, they were trying to convince themselves as well. They all wanted to leave, but the villagers were loyal enough to the chief to stay on the island, even though they didn't want to.
To be fair for a kid she's unusually determined to throw herself at the ocean >_>
Chip Noir holy. shit.
Know why she died?
She probably didn't Consider the coconut
You are your father's daughter... Stubbornness and pride
Mind what he says but remember you may hear a voice inside.
That part speaks to what I'm dealing with personally
No! Not even it's leaves? Or the water that is inside? Goodness me, she missed out on so much!
i like how this isnt the cliche "oh i dont want to stay here i want to do my own things no one understands me" storyline, moana actually tries to stay there and be chief, she actually wants to. alot of movies dont do that
and the reason she left was so she could help everyone on the island too
That's something I really love about this movie, even though Moana is called to the ocean, she grows to respect her island and the elders and the villagers.
Viimine also when she leaves its not just because shes being selfish. She wants to save her island
"In time you'll learn just as I did"
BRILLIANT FORESHADOWING
The last "and no one leaves" sends little shivers up my spine. I love this song and this movie

Moana is an iconic princess. She actually does something for her people, like Mulan another iconic role. She stands up for herself and learns who she is. She is amazing. well Maui did kind of save her ass a bajillion times so she would've probably died without a man (DEMI GOD). lol Nothing wrong with needing help sometimes, I wish Disney would make a movie about that instead of pushing all this "Women can do anything a man can do!" cause for like 90% of women, we cant lol
Highland Bilby true but I really liked Maui!! I think Moana is more independent than more princesses! I agree though lmAo:)
I just want to add to your list there. Belle and Merida (in my opinion) are also pretty iconic. Maybe not to the same scale as Moana and Mulan, but for the time it was made, Belle was pretty revolutionary. I totally agree about the soundtrack, it's one of my favorites :)
didn’t even consider the coconut till I saw these comments
How rude of you
Yes
How dare you. You are gross.
I feel like I now connected with you on a spiritual level.
same lol
This is so well worded
Most importantly, this movie taught us to consider coconuts too

This song and the scenes are literally so deep.
Showcases how the optimism and exploration melts away for most people as we get older and see the logic of responsibility, safety, and "building a life where youre at"
The dynamic with the grandma and Moana and even her quick look back to the sea and her grandmother as she's trying to accept her life and responsibility as an adult but still having that curious spark never having left.
Even the dads line "you'll learn just as I did" implying he was once young and curious too but gradually gave way to responsibility and "safer choices" as he became an adult.
The way they use this to showcase and reveal the experiences and personalities of the characters is a beautiful set up for the rest of the film.
Ana:I'm going to marry Prince Hans!!!
Elsa: Have you considered the coconut?
"Um, where did you even GET that? We live in a snow-covered kingdom."
"Rapunzel brought it last week. She's REALLY well-traveled."
a bird may fly south for the winter!
Quincy Cade You don't have to be white to be corny.
Oh my god
geordan campbell At least our father's didn't bale on us
I just realised that moana's parents don't die in the movie, odd considering Disney has something against mothers especially.
Both of Mulan's and Merida's parents also don't die either
taymartin58 they are the odd ones in the disney families
TheGhostgodzilla probaly because theyre not fairy tales
a lot of disney movie characters are missing their mothers, since Walt Disney's own mother died from carbon monoxide poisoning from the new house Walt bought her shortly after his success in the film industry. He felt responsible for his mother's death, and yeah... idk if this is 100% true, just something i read somewhere
Eileen L Ya it's true I read it from his own biography😢
I love how Moana wasn't rebellious and wanted to just not listen and do her own thing for herself. SHE was kind and unselfish willing to give up something she loved for the good of her entire island. That's what a good leader does. And I love how in the song you see the maturity of Moana. She was like she would stay with her people with her and was geuininely okay with it and excited to do her best and lead. I love it and how it shows in a way how it's okay to transition into adult responsibility. It can have its own happiness to it and you can find it still even if it isn't your exact dream and maybe eventually your dreams will make room for themselves.
You are your father's daughter

ladies and gentlemen...
HERE COMES THE VILLAGE CHIEF
the moment you've been waiting for
HERE COMES THE VILLAGE CHIEF
the pride of motunui...
HERE COME THE VILLAGE CHIEF--
CHRIS JACKSON.
labislazuli 😂
Moana, make way, make way!
Moana, it's time you knew
The village of Motunui is
All you need
The dancers are practising
They dance to an ancient song
(Who needs a new song? This old one's all we need)
This tradition is our mission
And Moana, there's so much to do (make way!)
Don't trip on the taro root
That's all you need
We share everything we make (we make)
We joke and we weave our baskets (aha!)
The fishermen come back from the sea
I wanna see
Don't walk away
Moana, stay on the ground now
Our people will need a chief
And there you are
There comes a day
When you're gonna look around
And realize happiness is
Where you are
Consider the coconut (the what?)
Consider its tree
We use each part of the coconut
That's all we need
We make our nets from the fibers (we make our nets from the fibers)
The water is sweet inside (the water is sweet inside)
We use the leaves to build fires (we use the leaves to build fires)
We cook up the meat inside (we cook up the meat inside)
Consider the coconuts (consider the coconuts)
The trunks and the leaves (ha!)
The island gives us what we need
And no one leaves
That's right, we stay
We're safe and we're well provided
And when we look to the future
There you are
You'll be okay
In time you'll learn just as I did
You must find happiness right
Where you are
I like to dance with the water
The undertow and the waves
The water is mischievous (ha!)
I like how it misbehaves
The village may think I'm crazy
Or say that I drift too far
But once you know what you like, well
There you are
You are your father's daughter
Stubbornness and pride
Mind what he says but remember
You may hear a voice inside
And if the voice starts to whisper
To follow the farthest star
Moana, that voice inside is
Who you are
We make our nets from the fibers (we weave our nets from the fibers)
The water is sweet inside (and we taste the sweet inside)
We use the leaves to build fires (we sing these songs in our choir)
We cook up the meat inside (we have mouths to feed inside)
The village believes in us (that's right!)
The village believes (ha!)
The island gives us what we need
And no one leaves
So here I'll stay
My home, my people beside me
And when I think of tomorrow
There we are
I'll lead the way
I'll have my people to guide me
We'll build our future together
Where we are
'Cause every path leads you back to
Where you are
You can find happiness right -
Where you are
Where you are
cactus bodywash thanks!!
Aww
I was looking for this comment, thanks~
Wow u wrote the whole song
Minor nitpick, but it's supposed to be "(A real tasty treat inside)" not "(we taste the sweet inside)"
I like Grandma's lyrics about yourself about following your own voice, there's such a profound message in it.
This song just SCREAMED Hamilton to me, I can't believe I didn't recognize Christopher Jackson's and Phillipa Soo's voices, they sound amazing!
Laurel Kane Chris is in there, but I'm not sure about Philippa
+Abby Cecilia Im pretty she plays one of the female singers.
I saw Philippa's name in the credits, so she was in somewhere. Not sure where, though.
Jabroniville she voiced one of the villagers
The mom is definitely Nicole Scherzinger though. Not Philippa Soo.

I think my favorite part has to be when Moana's dad sings "and no one leaves". Sounds so good.
Same here!
Haha
He sounded British on that line. It was really weird lol. He completely lost his usual accent
Me too!!
I love that part 🤧🤧
I think I finally get the understand the undertone of this song, be content with what you have and don't go looking for adventure or what you are supposed to do because it will find you in its own time.

This movie is literally screaming for a Broadway production.
Guy_With_A_Stick Except 90% of the action takes place in the middle of the ocean and the ocean itself is a sentient character and Maui shapeshifts every twelve seconds and that would be hella difficult to do on stage?
Difficult is not impossible. ;)
Guy_With_A_Stick all the transformations could be done with projection. And if a broadway production way possible for the little mermaid. It must be possible for moana! 🙌🏻💪🏼

I personally love the soundtrack for his own sake - not caring about the one who wrote it...

Are you Aaron Burr, sir?
That depends,
Who's asking?
Oh, sure, sir
I'm Alexander Hamilton,
I'm at your service, sir
I have been looking for you
I'm getting nervous
Sir, I heard your name at Princeton
I was seeking an accelerated course of study
When I got sort of out of sorts with a buddy of yours
I may have punched him it's a blur, sir
He handles the financials?
You punched the bursar?
Yes, I wanted to do what you did
Graduate in two, then join the revolution he looked at me like I was stupid
I'm not stupid
So how'd you do it,
How'd you graduate so fast?
It was my parent's dying wish before they passed
You're an orphan, of course
I'm an orphan
God, I wish there was a war
Then we could prove that we're worth more than anyone bargained for
Can I buy you a drink?
That would be nice
While we're talking, let me offer you some free advice
Talk less
What?
Smile more
Ha
Don't let them know what you're against or what you're for
You can't be serious
You wanna get ahead?
Yes
Fools who run their mouths off wind up dead
Yo yo yo yo yo
What time is it?
Show time
Like I said
Show time, show time
Yo, I'm John Lauren's in the place to be
Two pints o' Sam Adams, but I'm workin' on three, uh
Those redcoats don't want it with me
'Cause I will pop chick-a pop these cops till I'm free
Oui oui, mon ami, je m'appelle Lafayette
The Lancelot of the revolutionary set
I came from afar just to say bonsoir
Tell the king casse-toi
Who's the best, c'est moi
Brrrah, brraaah I am Hercules Mulligan
Up in it, lovin' it, yes I heard ya mother said come again
Ay, lock up ya daughters and horses, of course
It's hard to have intercourse over four sets of corsets (wow)
No more sex, pour me another brew, son
Let's raise a couple more to the revolution
Well, if it ain't the prodigy of Princeton college
Aaron Burr Give us a verse,
Drop some knowledge
Good luck with that, you're takin' a stand
You spit, I'm 'a sit
We'll see where we land (boo)
Burr, the revolution's imminent, what do you stall for?
If you stand for nothing Burr, what'll you fall for?
Oh, who are you oh, who are you oh, who are you?
Oh, who is this kid, what's he gonna do?
If he considered the coconut he would’ve said no-! OH ALEXANDER
The Universe of Random Stuff why?
Aaron Burr not surprised. What happened to that 40 dollar coconut you bought?

dono irawan beautiful way of thinking, but what if your heart says nothing?
+Iridescent Noise You're probably dead if it's completely quiet...
yraco my sister kept insulting the movie, dad slept through it. i was the only one crying my heart out :))) famillies can make you feel horible to go to the movies
They weren't just holding her back to piss off the viewers, they had an actual reason for once.
exactly, and the father feared the ocean due to his past. Very real and interesting
I mean how can you even argue about her father's reasons for worrying about his daughter going to the ocean? It is where his best friend died. There are also monsters lurking beneath... considering those coconut pirates... I wont let my daughter go near the ocean too... :d
So, what you are saying is... consider the coconut (pirates)?
It was a breath of fresh air to me that a movie actually had it so that the differing opinions of the protagonist aren't ridiculously extreme. It was very simple that the father needed her to be the chief and that the water was too dangerous to sail on. She's his daughter regardless, he wants to protect her. Neither he nor her is wrong in their opinions and it's nice that the movie had it that way.
Imperator Exactly! MOANA CONSIDER THE COCONUTS WHY DON'T YOU? THAT'S WHY NOBODY LEAVES THE ISLAND!
The part where younger Moana says, “I wanna see,” refering to the world outside her island breaks my heart for some reason. I think they did an amazing job in hiring Lin-Manuel Miranda to write the music for this movie, he is simply amazing and did an awesome job.

If only people would read the additional info provided below these videos, if you click on "SHOW MORE" u will see the people who perform this song. Phillipa Soo is not listed, apparently she is in the movie as a villager but not in this song.
I like how there was no "male heir" bs. Everyone KNOWS Moana can do it, it's a great message for kids ( I think at least)
jonkeybong yeah, she was the firstborn, end of story. I loved how they didn't even MENTION it, because it wasn't worth mentioning.
Jackie house Yeah. It was just obvious that she was the heir and that she would be the next village Chieftain. It was so refreshing.
Jackie House AND they know she can do it without needing a spouse.
And no dumb love between 2 strangers who want to marry instantly.

Rebecca Robinson *cough*Mulan*cough*
she had every intention of coming home.
Followed immediately by a song where she happily abandons everything.

GlitchyPresident would you like to see they make Moana 2 when she found a husband 🌟?
Not really!
GlitchyPresident Really 🌟?
Solange Griffin then it would be exactly like Pocahontas, which I do not want.
This soundtrack is so inspiring to me.. Makes me really excited to get back to school and work toward that art degree!
You and me both!
coconut degree
Ashley Walton HELL YEAH!
Martin Holck Worth more than an art degree :P
Most of The Comments Talks about Moana's Father considering the coconuts, but can we talk about her grandmother's part?
ITS AMAZING
Finally a normal comment
"I like to dance with the water, the undertow and the waves. The water is mischievous, I like how it misbehaves. The village may think I'm crazy or say that I drift too far, but once you know what you like, well there you are."
Best part💖
Ps: Never consider coconuts
Kenya Carter I love how she sings: "You are your father's daughter
Stubbornness and pride
Mind what he says but remember
You may hear a voice inside
And if the voice starts to whisper
To follow the farthest star
Moana, that voice inside is who you are"
almost like one's own grandmother giving you advice to follow your dreams ❤️
Agree. Best part of this song. And Gramma is my favourite character in the movie.
DUDE I LISTEN TO THE WHOLE SONG JUST TO GET TO THAT PART, definitly the best part, and it contrasts so well with the rest of the song... I wish it was a bit longer :(
*_always consider the coconut_*
