- Welcome back to my channel and in todays video we are down at Pickering’s Bikes in Measham UK, where Dave is going to talk you through the process of wheel building.
He will be building a vintage 700c wheel, radially laced to a Gran Robert hub.
If you like an in depth look at all things bike repair, mechanics and workshops, hopefully I’ve got you covered here!

Very therapeutic. Interesting comments about when n where to use a radial pattern, which looks very cool. What pattern would you recommend for a single speed coaster brake. I think i pinged one today under heavy braking.
Also, did you not use a tension meter or walk all over it before riding it?
For a coaster brake I’d say similar to disc a good three cross would be a fair balance - or perhaps a crows foot? Or totally bombproof four cross if the hubs allow!
I personally don’t think walking over a wheel is necessary - although I know some folks do, I like to place it on a flat surface and tension it by hand, whereas Dave swears by the method he uses here.
After building hundreds of wheels Dave likes to do his tension by feel, and I can’t argue with that as I’ve been running his wheels on my gravel bike for almost two years without a need for any remedial truing!
Beautiful wheel build I still like rim brakes well done 😊
Thanks so much 👍👍👍
Very interesting video. I am going to get some wheels built for my steel bike, and was considering gold hubs, black rims and silver spokes. I wasn't sure if they woukd look too bling compared to silver hubs, but having seen yours I'll be going for the gold 😊
Sounds lovely - hope you’re build goes well!! 👍👍
Well done boys
Thanks JC 👍👍👍
32h or 36h
36h on this build if I remember correctly 👍
