I've always thought that this was a purely synthesized sound used in midi files. I remember hearing this instrument in Paper Mario 64's Forever Forest theme.
i think i first heard it in mario kart for super nintendo. this instrument + whistles (list a referee whistle) = that song i'm thinking of from mario kart
i always have to google 'me and julio down by the schoolyard' or '13th floor elevators' to find out what the heck the instrument is called , just to forget it again after 1 hour
I heard this in the Mario Party theme forever ago and didn't know how else to describe it other than as a synth "dog barking." I was soon informed by the kind people of Yahoo Answers that it is the cuica.
Woah. This is not what I thought this instrument would look like. I heard it in Cuphead in the track "Floral Fury" and it always sounded like a straw being moved up and down in a plastic lid.
Funny thing is: in the Netherlands and Belgium, we use this instrument too between Saint Martin's day (last day of november) and Carnival (in western Europe around february/march). It is somewhat forgotten, but a hundred years ago it was a fun folk instrument used by children. We call it "Foekepot" or " Rommelpot" (translates something like ' Rumbling jar'). The main difference with our Foekepot is that the drum stick is fixed with the point inside the drum; in the Foekepot, the drum stick sticks outwards on top. I have also used it in a music activity at daycare in which I tried to combine music and recycling. We made it with a plastic yoghurt jar,, a tapas stick and two rubber bands. First, you wrap the middle of the plastic bag around the broadest part of the tapas stick and then fasten it with the first rubber band. Then, you wraps all sides of the plastic bag on the rim of the yoghurt jar and fasten that with the second rubber band: presto , ready, and lots of fun! Remember to moisten your fingers a little before you swipe those fingers up and down around the stick, that produces the funny sound.
I've had a synthesizer with this sound as part of its drum kit for years and I finally found out what the sound was by searching "instrument that makes a squeaky sound"
This video is as old as me that’s not the point but this instrument is literally my favorite I love hearing it all over video games and in electric keyboards and stuff
Me too! I've searched for a long time what's amazing instrument made this sound so particular. I've seen a video where it's a musician who play it, but today it's... The revelation! Many thanks from France from a french guy who love music.
I first heard this sound on the old yamaha keyboards in the early 90s... I was about 3 or 4 when I first pushed that blue drum sound button and by god did it make me anxious. I don't know why haha
When used efficiently, this instrument can be an outstanding rhythm feature. But even more, there are (specially female) vocalists who can imitate the sound which is even more fascinating.
I've always wondered "what's that instrument I hear in a variety of gaming songs, typically jungle-themed ones, that make a "ooo"/"whoop"/"hoot" sound?" Well, now I know. Thank you.
I hear this instrument as part of jazzy music theme on Gran Turismo and always wonder what instrument was that or if it is even a musical intrument at all. I never knew it all these years playing GT, until now.
I always wondered what the hell is that sound in the background of baldi's basics ost, even i knew that it's some kind of percussion in midi. Even found it on my piano's drum kit but it had no name, but today I found this. And I know that this is an existing instrument.
This is used in a-lot of nintendo games. Infamously used in the Goron City theme in the Zelda series. and... ugh... yes, it was used in the PC game baldi's basics as well, but I mostly know it from Zelda.
I just thought it was the lid to some drink cup being played, but now I know what's on Beastie Boy's "20 Questions" from the Sounds of Science anthology.
Yo! This took me 10 years to find out where that hooting sound was coming from in Mario vs Donkey Kong GBA and Warioware Twisted. I always thought it was just DK hooting but it’s an actual instrument! I want to use this instrument on my videos
Staple of batucada rhythms! Fun trivia…. Jerry Goldsmith used this instrument in a very avant garde way while composing the soundtrack for Planet of the Apes in 1968!
Baldi's Basics for sure! The cucia is featured in many soundtracks including Cuphead, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Snipperclips, Pikuniku, Super Mario Sunshine, Paper Mario, Maggie and the Ferocious Beast, The Simpsons Hit & Run, Ooblets, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, and many more.
I've always thought that this was a purely synthesized sound used in midi files. I remember hearing this instrument in Paper Mario 64's Forever Forest theme.
It was a recurring sound in cheap Yamaha keyboards and the like. I guess it's part of General MIDI.
i think i first heard it in mario kart for super nintendo. this instrument + whistles (list a referee whistle) = that song i'm thinking of from mario kart
I'm just now finding out what instrument made this sound...I heard in a lot of 70s & 80s music. I always thought it was an orangutan

Me: What a cool instrument.
Nintendo 64: It's free real estate.
I always assumed the instrument that makes this sound would be something you'd blow into, so... interesting to see it's actually some kind of drum !
I love this sound! It’s always reminds me of Brazil 💙
I heard this in the Mario Party theme forever ago and didn't know how else to describe it other than as a synth "dog barking." I was soon informed by the kind people of Yahoo Answers that it is the cuica.

YES!
Woah. This is not what I thought this instrument would look like. I heard it in Cuphead in the track "Floral Fury" and it always sounded like a straw being moved up and down in a plastic lid.
Interestingly, the sound is produced by the same physical principle in both situations! Amplified friction transmitted to a membrane.
Haha 😂
And i love that the reasoning is because that's _essentially_ what it is lol
Literally I searched "brazilian instrument that sounds like a bird" and I found it
Props to you for at least knowing it was Brazilian,

Yes. This is what I’ve been looking for.
I hear this instrument as part of jazzy music theme on Gran Turismo and always wonder what instrument was that or if it is even a musical intrument at all. I never knew it all these years playing GT, until now.
In 2nd grade I had to make an instrument out of stuff in my house and I made a cuica with my mom and it actually turned out really good.
Finally found out what made the "ha hoo" sounds in the Baldi's Basics school theme.
In Baldi’s basics, it was just the midi sample.
@@FB64_Fakebetayeah.

I always wondered what the hell is that sound in the background of baldi's basics ost, even i knew that it's some kind of percussion in midi. Even found it on my piano's drum kit but it had no name, but today I found this. And I know that this is an existing instrument.
I always thought it sounded like a small barking dog. I wondered what made this sound for decades until someone on TH-cam answered my question.
the first time I remember clearly hearing this instrument and wanted to know what it was was in the movie predator 2
This is used in a-lot of nintendo games.
Infamously used in the Goron City theme in the Zelda series.
and... ugh... yes, it was used in the PC game baldi's basics as well, but I mostly know it from Zelda.

I think this is the melancholy instrument used in the intro of "Madagascar" by Weather Report on Night Passage...
I used to hear this sound in a lot of parliament and cameo songs…never knew what it was until now!!
Kedamono makes this sound. I find the Cuica noise to be nostalgic.

I remeber a cartoon show where this sound appears when somebody says something funny/dumb, or it's just my imagination?
Listen to Manha (morning) by Azymuth if you want to hear one being used in a song.
