- When a committal service has concluded, the Vault man, the Cemetery crew, and the funeral director stay behind to lower the casket, and lower the grave liner.
A grave liners purpose is to prevent the soil above the vault from settling as the casket deteriorates, it does not slow the deterioration process or keep the elements away from the casket.
A Burial Vault serves the same purpose but offers further protection to the casket.

Thank you for showing these. I had the opportunity to see and witness my Grandfather in Law be interned since I had to ride in the hearse and the driver had to stay and witness the actual burial and it was an honor to be there with him till the end. Do you ever get a chance to find out about the person being buried? I know you cannot name names, but a short voiceover about the persons life, kids, grandkids, accomplishments would be interesting to know about while watching your work.

My dad died during a horrific snowstorm years ago, and his body had to be stored in the funeral home until the cemetery reopened for burials when we got there we couldn’t of course do graveside because of the threat of the whole thing caving in and killing people so we had it was held right there Road right beside it and the vault was there. The casket was lowered into the vault lid placed, and then we left after that but they then you know with a crane or whatever kind of equipment took the whole thing and lowered the whole thing into the ground, that was weird, but it was done with great dignity, these men who do these things are very sensitive and kind people

I watched a similar video to this one. I hadn't realized that the vault was raised up to the lid for placement and sealing. I had always assumed that the lid was lowered to the vault while it was in the grave. Learned something.
I've never seen in person the vault brought up, the vault sealed and then the whole thing lowered into the ground. I've always seen it done the way your describing. There are a various ways of doing it I guess. At the end of the day I'm not going to offer my suggestions to anybody as long as everything they are doing there is with the respect of the recently departed and surviving family in mind. That and everything is heavy and awkward. I'm not gonna recommend anything LOL.
The reason we display and close grave liners in this fashion is that our company believes every funeral deserves the same respect. Having the base of a Grave liner in the bottom of the grave doesn't effect its purpose at all, but sealed Burial Vaults are displayed this way to ensure the lid of the vault is aligned properly over the base to ensure a proper seal. It's more efficient to lower the casket and close the vault or grave liner above ground where the family can see that it is done properly before being lowered.

I was one of the pallbearers for my grandmother in 2005. I also was a driver in the Lincoln behind the hearse. Carrying her casket was the hardest thing I've ever done.
I have a question--if the casket is made of metal, will the vault still be necessary?
Most cemetery’s require a vault.Most caskets rust and collapse from the ground pressuse leaving a dip in the ground.A vault prevents that
The metal on the caskets is extremely thin. The weight of the soil on top over time would cause the top to collapse.

@@paulgrimm When I was in the Air Force, I fired the final salute to an airman being buried in a very old, early 19th century cemetery. While marching to the grave site we observed many sunken graves where over the centuries the wooden caskets had rotted away in Charleston's hot, moist, humid and very rainy climate.
I know in Maryland no matter what casket you have. It still has to be a container and so if you have a stainless steel casket, it’s still goes into a concrete liner, although there are different kinds of liners of course at different costs so you go through all making all those decisions I don’t think that there is anything, that really keeps out everything because if it’s completely sealed, I understand that mold grooves all over the body and it takes actually takes longer to decay so that’s why there is that thin space between the lid and the bottom part. The only thing that doesn’t need a vault is cremation again here in Maryland my sister died and I bought a small Marble container at her cage were in there and I chose to bury that because I didn’t want necklaces or anything like that I mean what would happen to him if I died do you know if there’s no nobody to inherit them anyway I buried it, but they didn’t because it had already been cremated so if you don’t like bugs crawling over your belly popping over cremation is a better way to gocleaner and faster
In Canada the casket liner is in the grave and the casket is lowered down into the liner.
I think you are referring to what is called a "lawn crypt." I can't speak about Canadian cemeteries, but most American cemeteries do not have lawn crypts. Most American cemeteries use the system that you saw in this video. However, lawn crypts are becoming more commonly used in larger memorial parks throughout America.

Ladies and gentlemen watching this casket lowering process, please take note:
The three gentlemen who arrived during the lowering process, and obviously after the interment service was completed, are there at will, but it is a very important aspect of the lowering process. You and your buddies need to stick together and make sure that you actually go in and that that wonderful casket and vault is put where they are supposed to be put, before it’s all said and done. So yes, there’s a bit of ha ha here but actually someone really does need to witness all the way to the dirt being tapped. That’s how you know for sure that everything was done right. Nothing will be left to conjecture then.
While that is true and absolutely welcome at every service, the men in this video are the cemetery workers and the man off to the side is a director. I do not film with family present unless they ask me to, which has happened a few times. Personally my family and I prefer to stay for the entire process, to make sure it's done properly but also it does offer a sense of closure to the life of our lost loved one. In my opinion everyone should handle the Burial of family the way they chose, but having someone to hold the funeral home, vault man, and cemetery crew accountable is always advised, thank you for your comment!

While I only found your page a few weeks ago, I’ve watched literally dozens and dozens of the shorts over the last few weeks. There’s something about the way that you have chosen to produce your videos that leaves me heartened and inspired. I guess if I had a complaint, it would be that more than a few of them seem to just stop (not counting the multi-part ones).

What do you do if it’s a Jewish person being buried? Do they have a vault too or just the pine box (since they believe in ashes to ashes and dust to dust)? I know they have their own cemetery but I always wondered how they were done.

In Alaska in some places some dead are put on top of the ground because of melting permafrost and too much water when they dig the ground. Some are buried and some are not..
Will that vault fill with water, sense it’s not a sealed lined vault? It looks like a cement grave box.
That’s a grave liner and yes It will fill up with water first rain.
My parents and wife are buried with no vault or liner of any kind. Just the all wood casket straight into the ground. Plus, we don’t leave until the entire grave is filled in with the dirt by hand shoveling it in.

cremation is becoming much more common and eventually ground burials will be rare.
That’s just a liner, the first big rain that liner is gonna fill up with water. Doesn’t protect the casket from the elements.

How does the top seal to the bottom of the vault or does it just sit on top?
With a concrete grave liner there isn't any kind of seal between the vault and top. It's use is strictly utility so the grave doesn't cave in.
Please watch some more of his videos. He explains in great detail about the seal, liner, and how it all works together to properly seal the vault.
At least I don't have to stand out in the hot sun and watch, like those 3 men!
In my state they don’t have nice lowering things like this I think they just use a fork lift and lower the vault top in place … I could be wrong I never stayed after to see but I’ve never seen a set up like the one you use the vault top is always on the grass
Our company sets our vaults and liners the Wilbert Way, which is where the vault or liner is closed or sealed above ground ensuring the proper closure.

Don't seal top of vault?
This grave liner does not seal, it's a concrete grave box that is strictly for the preservation of the soil above the grave.
Ain't gonna be no zombies popping out of this bad boy! You got the casket, then the concrete liner, then the two tons of Earth! Yeah. It ain't gonna happen!

My parents own a biggest. Funeral home in Vietnam before 1975 , they don’t have all theses fancy tools so they have to hire ten people just to low the casket down ,so amazing to see one man do it everything . 🙏🙏🙏
