Afterall, if we aren’t having fun or if we all drove the same car… it would take away from the experience and community. Thanks for watching
Just came across your channel belatedly, impressive channel and content indeed. Looks like it's a channel made by track enthusiasts for fellow track enthusiasts. I'm from Australia we bought our FL5 in May 2023 when they first became avail from dealers. Luckily there was no dealer premium here and we paid the MSRP of AUD $73000. Was expecting the car to be like a bigger and more powerful version of a Golf Gti in manual rather than the high revving engines + close ratio gearings of Hondas of the past which we still have, and car turned out to be pretty much what we expected. Driving it to the limit at the track was a differently story, while it solved all my lack of straightline speeds of my other Hondas, it give me plenty of news ones namely the electronic interventions. I couldn't disable the Agility Handling Assist even after pedal dance and the stability control can cut it pretty abruptly upon trail braking deep-ish into corners but applying the outside rear brakes quite hard ( very disconcerting when not expecting it ). Long pressing VSA in the individual mode just merely reduce the stability controls & traction control by a little and I don't get to remember do the pedal dance every time I get on the track. Aside from optimising the car setup with suspension setup, tyres and brake pads upgrade to go faster, I would love to know more about the intricacies' of the how the VSC + AHA works and if there is anyway of allowing brake and throttle overlap via a diagnostic mode or Hondata tuning setting. That way I could learn over time how to work along with the car's electronic systems rather than against them. I have found very information about this on YT as well as on forums. Hopefully you guys can give us some pointers down the track as you find out more about what makes the FL5 tick on track over time.
The part where you talk about why the stock suspension in the rear is so stiff in R mode makes so much sense… this was really well done. More of the discussion part in other videos, this one was in depth. Had to pause a few times and think about what you were saying. You should do a podcast or something. Great video once again
I hated Savagegeese's initial impression on FL5's R+ mode for having "too much rebound". Idk if they understood what "too much rebound" means. A blanket statement that can mean either, "too much bouncing caused by having insufficient rebound force" or "jarring bouncing, when rebound force is too high where the damper packed down". But through Jason's report, I think the R+ mode has too much rear compression damping Low to High Speed.
I’m getting a few questions on Instagram so I’ll add this here. The high speed compression damping is too high- it is over damped. In other words, it’s not compressing enough on curbs, bumps, anything with high piston speed. The rebound is under damped, in other words, it rebounds too quickly. So on high speed, you get a suspension that is resistant to compressing and when it does, it wants to spring back too quickly. On the low speed side, I find this acceptable and is actually the correct performance set up for an FF car. In an FF car, in regards to the on power mechanics, you don’t want the rear to squat. If it squats too much on power, the front wheels will have trouble putting down the power as you’re taking weight off the front axel. I’d say it’s about right, and I understand what the Honda engineers are trying to do. Also, as mentioned in the video, that will help the rear end rotate on entry and help with mid corner and exit as the driver gets on power. With our previous Audi TCR and Current Audi TT Endurance car, we have the high speed compression set to soak up all the bumps, but the low speed damping is high to achieve the best of both worlds, namely… 1. Keep the wheels on the ground over bumps and curbs, ideally keeping the tire on the ground and settling in one stroke. 2. For the rear to not compress a lot on power, keeping the weight on the front driven wheels. Thank you all for watching.

Its worth it based on the lack of depreciation alone, I put 40k miles on my fk8 civic type r LE. I only lost 3.5k in depreciation. The dollor per mile cost is very low on these cars. The Elantra would have cost me more to own to due to Hyundai's horrible depreciation curve. If your buying this as primarily a track car it makes no sense, the over heating issues are near impossible to solve in any sort of cost effective manner. I don't know why would buy a hot hatch as a track car anyway, buy a dedicated platform like a SS 1LE.

I have an FK8 and am definitely faster with the pedal dance vs long push VSA. OTOH, it may well be due to having softer shocks with the pedal dance. In the FK8, to go long push VSA requires the stiffer shock settings of the R+ mode where as in the FL5 I believe you can set these individually. Sure would like to have the Hyundai diff though and clutch type diffs are pretty pricey for the Honda. Wheel spin out of 5B or the Fabi hairpin is a big issue with my car. Don't really like using less throttle.
Great insights from a fast time attack FK8 Driver. For sure, the helical style will definitely struggle most in those tight corners, so it's even more important to get the car rotated earlier in the corner - which an experienced driver like yourself can do. The car is incredibly stable but I don’t think it can... I did an early lift and partial throttle over crest, into full throttle… a very conservative, lower risk approach. I don’t get enough feedback from the r23 to send it 10/10ths and keep in mind, I got 3 laps total. The car did slightly grab the rear inside wheel, which suggests to me the car is generating some yaw already in 4. I will say… it might very well be possible on CRS or RE71RS on a perfect day.

@@DriversPaddock I've been subscribed. I'm local to the GTA and have been out for a track day with the SPDA. Do you compete in OTA only? Or do you ever run lapping days with other groups? Also, just wondering about the point you made about throttle induced oversteer. I had believed that the EN actually rotates more than the type r. This is just from what I saw in track reviews by the Topher and in a savagegeese review (with Brit Casey). But the type r is actually more oversteer prone? Or are you saying that it's easier to modulate the oversteer without having to go fully on and off the pedal. IIRC, the EN only does brake torque vectoring with traction on. Traction full off will disable it (common tip to preserve pads). Maybe that gradual rear end rotation is the rear torque vectoring being active on the fl5?
I do OTA, CSCS, CTAC (now discontinued), LDRC Endurance Racing, CASC Sprints and next year - hopefully SPC and WRL. I Instruct with OTA, RASER Motorsports and will be with Sieya and JRP. Watch one more time when I talk about on throttle vs off throttle mechanics. I think you may be mixing up what I am saying. FWD cars do not have throttle induced oversteer, that's not possible if the rear wheels aren't driven. What I am saying is that off throttle, the EN rotates more easily and in tighter corners, even with traction control fully off, it does grab inside front wheel to help the car rotate and help the diff bind. That's where brake Torque vectoring and brake bias yaw control differ, they are different things. What I'm saying is that on power, if you need rotation, the EN you need to lift. The nose is not as eager to tuck in - this is true for ALL FWD cars EXCEPT the FL5 CTR or UNLESS there is some brake magic going on. The reason for this is that on power mechanics for FWD cars are such that, it will always pull the car straight. The CTR with its sophisticated front and rear brake grab allows throttle adjustability mid corner that the EN just doesn't have. The car knows that if you're slightly backing off the throttle, you want the nose in so it aids in this by grabbing rear brake to rotate the car.
+R, VSA off I didn’t see a point in pedal dancing as I wanted to review and experience what the Honda engineers programmed and developed… and from the review… it’s amazing. Pedal dancing just makes the FL5 a FWD car with a helical style LSD, nothing special.
Civic is so overrated! How can anyone pay $50K for a honda??? 🤣 Build quality is rubbish, performance is garbage, branding is poor... Hyundai N-series over this crap any day!
Having owned both- the build quality on the elantra N is so far behind the CTR lol. One of the cheapest interiors on the market hands down.
Did you do +r mode and VSA off or pedal dance?
+R, VSA off
I didn’t see a point in pedal dancing as I wanted to review and experience what the Honda engineers programmed and developed… and from the review… it’s amazing.
Pedal dancing just makes the FL5 a FWD car with a helical style LSD, nothing special.
Can I please buy your front lip on this fl5
well, first in US, the car can be bought for sticker so I would choose the Type r and the N is just not a good looking car.
Civic is so overrated! How can anyone pay $50K for a honda??? 🤣 Build quality is rubbish, performance is garbage, branding is poor... Hyundai N-series over this crap any day!
brother, those N cars are blowing engines left and right.
Having owned both- the build quality on the elantra N is so far behind the CTR lol. One of the cheapest interiors on the market hands down. The CTR has also beat the EN in just about every single track comparison on YT, as well as just about every single overall comparison 😂 . Just say you can't afford the type r. No need to make bs up
@@vjd222dude Honda should pay you amount of D riding you do for this car in every type R video. Do you even work? lol because I don’t and see the thousands of comments you leave
14:23 it’s called lift-off oversteer and is a very normal characteristic of FWD cars. Nothing new at all. The shorter the wheelbase, the more pronounced this becomes.
Really want to like your videos, lots of content I am looking for, well edited and shot, however as soon as you pov driving starts and I see you your hands moving around on the wheel I have to switch off.
After seeing the GT3-RS pass you like that I lost interest. Yes modern cars are too heavy, hard on tires.
That car is over 11 seconds faster around this track and he backed off the throttle to let his teammate pass. AFAIK, later that day, Jason came within a tenth and his teammate broke the production car record set by Lars Kern in a GT2 RS and Ron Fellows in a Z06.
@jackycheung7565 WOW 11 Sec thats insane! , back in the day a crx si, or a prelude VTEC could hang with a 911.
Is this a joke? 7:44 ring time vs 6:49. No civic with equally skilled drivers ever kept up with RS
@justinli2691 do you remember the motor trend article "giant killer CRX" probably before your time. Also the CRX was overall winner of a thunderhill endurance race.
@justinli2691 the CRX was faster arround the Riverside raceway than the Ferrari and Porsche.
@illwillem on YT really shows the world what the EN can do. Setting some records in his class at big name race tracks. The car loves being taken to the edge. Tune out O.L. and a little bit of love wheels tires etc... the car is a track menace. Resale isn't to bad either tbh. I think the R has been "overproduced" when people start selling prices will flop imo.
They made 40k fk8s, half of which went to north America, and most of them are still going at $30k+ usd
@@ShaiyanHossainyup! TypeR will maintain value, especially the ones that are well maintained. The N will not be so lucky.
@@ShaiyanHossain same with the N they sold at $33k msrp and they go for $28k still. I've seen them $32k used. The TR is only that expensive because people are paying stupid prices for em to begin with.
