Tomb Raider Original vs Anniversary Graphics Comparison

- Since Tomb Raider Anniversary joined Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Library I thought it would be a great idea to do a comparison of this one of the very first remakes in gaming history with its 1996 original.
For those of you who had a chance to spend their childhood playing on PS One this video might be a nice back to the past.

Please note that original Tomb Raider is PS One version of the game recorded on PS3 meanwhle Anniverary is Xbox 360 version captured on Xbox One X.
In anniversary the opening cut scene made Lara more sympathetic towards the Shirpa but in the original she checks his pulse then moves on “Well he’s dead, now let’s see about this tomb” 😄

I just wish that with Anniversary they used more of the same lighting and colors from the original. I feel like it would have preserved the atmosphere a lot better.

i reall wish they had remade all of the original games like this it would've been a cool opportunity to clean up some of the rougher edges of the originals e.g. the controls, they really haven't aged well, maybe get rid of the quick time events though, probably sound like a busted record saying this but while they look cool and all i don't see the point of them just fight the boss like normal using your own skill.
but you do have to use your own skill to fight the t-rex lol
I fell in love with Lara from Anniversary and I'm still thinking that was the most beautiful Lara ever!

This was the "next gen" version of TRA, not even the PC version had these shaders and that lighting. I remember i kept questioning myself why only ps3 and x360 had to have such an advantage, as I played it on PS2, PSP, and PC, and none of these were like that (and TRL did have the next gen option on PC)... Still, good times! I actually loved Anniversary (despite liking older TRs more)

Well I like the old one. and the anniversary. But the graphics on Anniversary are much better. and Everytime I play Anniversary it Always remind me of the old one.

Nice! Don't see too many actual Remasters. They did a fine job with this one. Another good remaster was Crash Bandicoot.
Anniversary is remake.
It is NOT a remaster, it's a Remake. Crash Bandicoot one was a Remaster because it was basically the same game gameplay-wise, just with new graphics. But in terms of game engine it was a remake, though, so it's a hard call. But Tomb Raider Anniversary is a Remake because it plays nothing like original and also has different locations and different story direction. I somewhat don't understand why do humans care so little much about correct terms yet act like they're experts. I'm just saying that they should not act like experts when they don't do research.

Exactly. I would find it boring as hell to defeat a boss without any tactics, and in Anniversary, we were given a tactic for the T-Rex; shoot him repeatedly until he enrages and charges and then, lure him into hurting himself. That is so epic and way better than the Original.
It actually hurts seeing you dissing this remake when it's my first Tomb Raider game...

I think the old one is scariest, you have this sensation of being in danger and lost all the time and this is not in anniversary

Yeah the shots and the was it's funny tho ahaha but for the sunglasses they actually got that right you're supposed to wear them in a snowy mountain (like when you go skiing you put sunscreen and wear sunglasses)
First game lara was just being spontaneous. Also she wears more than kratos who goes into cold areas in practically only a tartan in god of war. Tomb raider 2 lara had more time to prepare. But yeah Lara's the kind of person who would leave right away if she had too and not think too much about how to dress. Again though after tr1 lara dressed better for each location
In my opinion Anniversary was a stunning remake. It contains all the best from the original and bring it to the next level. I wish that tomb raider becomes to the epic old fashion one after "shadow of the tomb raider" ( witch is actually already a third person far cry with a bit of tomb raider we all know)

Funny, I think Shadow looks more like classic Tomb Raider than TR 2013 and Rise combined. You got amazing jungle environments, puzzles, an option to disable all hints and painted ledges, free underwater movement, and more.

Ricardo Santos Ricardo Santos you've totally right with that jungle theme etc but at the end is it just 80% optimal what tomb raider actually stands for. You have to stop an Mayan apocalypse but you could looking for some herbs to help a old tribe lady to heal her son or so ... there is so much possibilities going on there (of course all optional). But those HUBs are the main concept around the new tomb raider series. From there you have to guide yourself trough the story with only 2 story based tombs or 10 (or so) optional tombs. In my opinion a tomb raider game must live from treasures, tombs and Adventures not for killing thousands of soldiers, any Rambo Features or roleplay elements motto "talk to many people to learn about the culture if the player want to" but yes on the surfaces shadow looks and seems definitely much more like an tomb raider an der 2013.

I played original TR like crazy as a kid, and I LOVED Anniversary, still love it today!! amazing remake that took best of TR and improved it. One thing I preferred in original is how Egypt levels were much more vibrant and colorful while in Anniversary they were very monochrome beige.. Anniversary/Legend/Underworld were last games I enjoyed! they need to remake TR2 too!! it would be amazing in today's graphics!!

It's crazy. I literally looked at the date "2007" and was completely sure there was another game named exactly the same around 2013. How could this thing run on a 2007 machine? Back then 2gb RAM and dual-core processors were new... Truth is not much changed in video games since 2007...graphics are a bit better but not the huge step as seen between tb1 and anniversary or for example ff7 and ff12
@@baronnuuke7821 Graphics have got diminished returns. I agree. I try to tell others this, but they don't always understand. HUGE difference between PS1 style graphics and PS2, but less astronomical leaps with each generation. Tomb Raider Anniversary is actually a PS2 game that got ported to 360/PS3. PC version is best, but I have major audio problems.
I'm so happy that anniversary is the same game as the original 1996 version.
It needs to happen with all PS1s with TR 2-4 and the 5th one which is chronicles I'm guessing.
Old Lara was such a bad ass, wish they made a game like the old ones with the new engine instead of this survival crap.
Old lara was good because she had a very 90s cool vibe would love to see a lara croft game where she was low poly and did stupid over the top stuff in a low poly world. Imagine what can be done with all that savings on processing could make after effects and gritty detail better. Also the original deaths felt brutal.

Revolutionary, the transition to 3D games. It was amazeballs back in the day. Especially since I was gaming since back in 92. The difference since 2D then to the 3D games of 1996 was quite remarkable (Dukenukem3d, Quake etc) . I suppose it was like VR or 4k today only more significant and lasting. I guess the next stage is holograms. "Computer, end program"

This brings back so many good memories. Now if only the new Tomb Raider games were actually like this, and you actually raided tombs under ground, instead of being a one teenager army taking on thousands of armed men, breaking necks, and strictly going from point A to point B to complete your “objective”. This “the original/anniversary” is and will always be my favorite out of all the series, and it’s not just nostalgia talking. It’s finding abandoned ruins underground, it’s the whole H.G. Wells atmosphere mixed with the feeling of grave robbing, platforming, puzzle solving and trying to explore places you didn’t even know you could reach. Those things are what make the series what it was. I guess I’ll just have to enjoy games of my childhood until one day they realize that people like the exploration of the originals.

Tomb raider was ruined gameplay wise when they switched to scripted platforming because scripted gameplay does not have that certain feeling you experience while playing 1-5, angel of darkness wasn’t scripted but it rarely delivered that feeling however storywise and environment wise it is one of the best.
what was scripted the cinematics ? LOL
When you jump to certain spots lara automaticaly grabs. This and the movements removed the calculations you had to make for the jumps. The same principle is used in uncharted franchise.

Tomb raider1 original looks better than the Tomb Raider Anniversary, in the original scene in the beginning she wore black glasses which looks better than the new glasses in Tomb Raider Anniversary, similarly all the environments in the original looks better.

Seriously, did you see Lara Croft on her 2013 reboots and it's sequels? She's covered in dirty and her hair is all messy! Yeah yeah, i know that it's realistic, that it's not "immersive" when character stays clean even after climbing a lot of cliffs... This is an aspect where realism ruined gaming. I want videogames to make me feel like an over-the-top epic hero/heroine who doesn't look at explosions. Today's heroes feel very hurt and weak whenever explosion occurs nearby.
Yes, i know that modern stories are more about personal growth... but hey, look, personal growth stories are everywhere nowadays, so it seems like a nice moment to become hip and cool by loving old games when protagonists were more perfect. If i would love modern TR games i just won't be unique, understand?
Unfortunately, this game sold poorly compared to others. The original 1996 and tomb raider 2013/2014 sold better. I think Tomb Raider Anniversary is one of the best ones. It has all the classic themes: platforming, level design, puzzles, deadly traps, atmosphere, isolation, Lara's backpack, boots, gloves etc. And they have some of the classic music I think. The game has mediocre combat & lacks set-pieces, but it was a remake and a 2007 game after all. I've love to see another tomb raider like this one, but even better maybe. Angel of Darkness had its share of technical issues & was much different than Anniversary. Shadow of the Tomb Raider plays more like a role playing game to an extent; not a classic platformer.

I actually prefer the original as nothing can beat originals in general. Tomb Raider Anniversary was amazing though.
The Anniversary Lara is my favorite one. She looks so beautiful.
Original has its charm (more colorful, etc.), but it's a bit painful for the eyes.
Played this on the Sega Saturn back then and as bizarre as it may sound it was awesome, you could die very easily but it was worth the price of admission, fond memories and thanks for the comparison.

i felt that anniversary was a magical game back then its is a really good game to this day the gameplay is smooth each gun has an unique feeling the envirements are special like the first one
I've read alot of comments here about the atmosphere being creepier and scarier in the original literally due to the shit limitations they had. They had to use alot of tricks for draw distance. I've played alot of Sega Saturn and PS1 games, but good lord the Original game is just ugly as sin. The dinosaur and the FMVs are so much cringe to look at I have decided I'm playing Anniversary and skipping the Original. Not to mention I get to avoiding putting myself through importing the Sakatore copy from Japan for the Saturn all to avoid framerate issues? Or bug? I don't even care. All way too much work just for a pixelated dark flicker mess. PS1 was my very first true console as a kid and I have almost no nostalgia for the thing because of how ugly it was to me then as it is to me now aside from Croc, Motor Toon Grand Prix, Spyro, and Vigilante 8 that console was ugly looking.
I don’t know why so many classic tomb raider fans didn’t like anniversary. To me it was a perfect remake.
DejaVoodooDoll couldnt disagree more. it has pretty much the exact same levels, so if you were not exploring archaeological sites in anniversary, you weren’t before. No one forced you to play it. I think the physicality of Lara in the legend trilogy was awesome and added so much to her character.
DejaVoodooDoll I have played both games...I know what each of them are like. Yes there is changes to accommodate the more modern gameplay but it’s still a very faithful remake. It’s controls are still great even today and if you think that game is twitchy you just think all modern action games are as it is no more or less twitchy than any other modern game.
One was action, and cutscene heavy, the other was exploration and puzzle focused. Big difference. More of based on the original than being a true remake.
The anniversary was exactly the same and their should be a complete remaster with original cast but renew dialogue
