Finally a video for this amazing Johannesburg landmark. The Carlton hotel/complex.
What very little people know is that one of South Africa's best Hotel School's operated from the top levels of this hotel in the last few years of its existance. I was one of the students who lived and studied there in 1997 before it closed in December. This hotel truly was remarkable and I am blessed with many beautiful and even sometimes naughty memories of living, studying, working in all departments of this hotel.
My Father had an office on the 44th floor of the Carlton Towers, representing ELF-AQUITAINE. Unfortunately, my Father never showed me the view. He didn't mix personal with professional matters
I remember seeing the Carleton Centre being constructed in 1971.
Why aren't there more documentaries about the buildings in Johannesburg these days people just see the CBD as a dump of old concrete buildings just waiting to catch fire because of neglect and the undermining of the rule of law. Sandton is nice but Johannesburg really is our New York in South Africa it's such a shame that we letting it go 😭 like this I want us to be building tall imposing structures in our city of Gold just like the old days I know because of historical circumstances the reason why Johannesburg became what it is but we can repurpose it to become a beacon of economic growth once more. There is so much history in this city that South Africans don't know about and if they don't know about it they cannot value the city we don't need to build new cities in South Africa we just need to repurpose reorganize and rebuild our older ones. If only I had money at least 1 billion rands I would buy the Carlton Hotel and return it to what it used to be and the entire Precinct as well. Thank you for your hard work I look forward to seeing more documentaries.
Tshepo!!! Thank you very much for your comment. I completely agree with you! I love CBD also and I am looking to do more small videos about CBD landmarks. I am now working on the Johannesburg Sun and Towers. Hope to drop it before the end of the year. It is difficult to get the right information about these concrete monuments and try to understand what really happend back in the day.
The anc government is what happened... Take a look at the rest of the country, not rocket science.
Dont forget apartheid too,you cant have luxuries in tge face of the poor masses and expect the luxury not to cease glistening !

Thanks for this wonderful channel and video. I remember the Carlton hotel with fond memories. Every Friday afternoon I'd catch the bus to Eloff Street with my parents and then we would have an early supper at the Koffiehuis near the foyer where a pianist always played. I had my 21st birthday at the Three Ships and married my first husband in one of the ballrooms. A very special hotel indeed.

I loved Joburg now live in the States. I worked in the Carlton Center & my apartment was the opposite side of the JG Stryden Tower (sorry that spelling is not correct). Brings back wonderful memories of friends, just a great place!

It's heartbreaking to look back and see how this city has been destroyed. No more clean streets with law and order no more SAA no more SAR even the municipal bus service was so reliable those days JHB RIP😢
We used to put on some beautiful fashion shows in the Ballroom at the Carlton, it could hold a few thousand people. I remember doing a shoot, there at the presidential suite amongst others, for overseas commercials; El Goucho, was another amazing restaurant, superb food; Three ships, that was another level, altogether.

Hello David, as an expat SA-citizen, now living in Germany, born & raised in "Jo'burg", I closely follow what is going on in SA and in that fascinating city. Thank you for the interesting information which in detail I did not know. My father often told us fondly of the Carlton Hotel in the 70's. Question: Could you do a video clip about the other Joburg tower, far lesser known as the Hillbrow Tower? I believe it is called the Sentech Tower nowadays? There also, my father told me, was a famous restaurant in the late 60's and in the 70's. He also recalled it vividly, with good memories. Perhaps you could recall its name and maybe you could do a short historical clip about that very handsome tower? Saw it last from afar in 2014, on my last visit to "Egoli". Unfortunately, no time to visit the Carlton Center or the 2 towers, but I was in the City Centre, in front of the very impressive "Anglo American Headquarter" Building of the Harry Oppenheimer time. Also a landmark building for another film clip......later....nice work, David, good information site for visitors from abroad! Keep it up, still lots of potential.

There were some other very fine hotels in downtown Jo'Burg. The Mark, the Sands, the Harrison Reef, and the Chelsea. They've all been abandoned and are now inhabited by squatters.

Different hotels for different eras. I do agree with you anyway. Space was needed for new buildings in CBD. Same problem Sandton has today.
@@Livinginsatv but isnt it ironic. Space was needed so "Hey, comon, lets knock down a beautiful old historic buiding and build a modern ugly scyscraper in its place so that we can make more money. Not even 100 years later and ugly scyscraper is deserted and serves no purpose

I worked across the road from this magnificent hotels, it was closed because thugs, thieves robbed the tourists so many times that the tourists stopped coming ...simple as this...
