I said, "hey, she's playing Seattle. I think I'll go!" My grandmother asked me, "can I come with you?" So both of us saw the show. This was (I believe) '86 or so.

Johnny Carson was a fan . . . he had her on the show several times. I saw her live in NYC - she brought down the house with "Halleluija". (And the "house" was Carnegie Hall.) Nashville was too small for her talent - I'm so glad she moved on!
1st time I saw her was around the release of INGENUE. 'Twas at The Paramount Theatre in Oakland, Ca. I was sitting somewhere in the 1st ten rows. THIS was her opening song. And, just like the first time I rode in a Tesla, my head was literally jerked back!! There is no voice like hers!!

I first saw her in Concert right before she hit it big sometime in the early 80's. She ony had an underground following at that time but was slowly catching on. She performed in a small intimate Theatre that held no more than about 300. When I left the Theatre that night I was speechless and knew I had just witnessed something great.
She used to play the Merville Hall on Vancouver Island in the 70s. She and the Reclines were destined for something more, and everyone knew it. She wore a cut off white wedding dress, cowboy boots & horn-rimmed glasses (for effect). Between the outfit & the amazing music, she made the kind of impression that led to fame inevitably coming her way.
I've just seen her in concert, she was outstanding. One of the best artistes of our time. I had a similar experience when I saw Sam Smith at the beginning of 2011 - he was completely unknown then, just a local lad singing to about 60 of us. I tried to get someone to sign him but they didn't want to know. So glad he made it. I adore K D Lang, she's a phenomenon x

What a performance, what a song. Every time I hear this song I just envision a scene from an old cowboy movie or a Zane Gray novel. An old cowpoke riding slowly down a dusty trail into the sunset.
Such a fine meeting of singer/songwriter & songwriter. There is so much “knowing” in the lyrics. This song lives at that instant when the ache of the past meets the hope of the future, when hope triumphs over experience. Yes, hope wins, but the ache hasn’t been banished, just relegated to an empty room of the heart. (I’m reminded of John Sebastian’s ‘The Room Nobody Lives In’.) And THIS voice! K.D.’s voice meanders gently between that heartache and hope, a creek across a prairie of the soul, sorrow is on one bank, happiness the other, touching both but being not quite either alone but melding the two. I listen to this song and I’m destroyed. ✌🏻
Ha-I live in Bothell, just outside Seattle. On the Carson I watched, she sang "crying". And I cryed through the whole song. I have never had a performance affect me like that. I wanted to wake up my boyfriend to hear it, but I could not leave the room--couldn't miss a second.
This is my favorite "look" for k.d. Of course, the song is great, the Voice is angelic...but I'm drawn to her physical appearance, jeans and all. Wise, soft, connected, and as real as ever. Shirttails out, k.d.!!
Abolute torch and twang was her best albumn! Its was a new twist on country music! Forget about dolly, carry and reba, kd had the pipies, shes slays it!
I remember seeing this performance on Johnny around 1989 or 90. At first I thought it was Charlie Sheen transitioning to a woman but after k.d. started singing the hairs on my neck stood up and I was hooked!
I've loved them all, Joni, Alannis, Diane, Diana, Rita, Anne, Kate & Anna, Fabienne, Avril, Nelly, Celine, Luce, Ginette, Marjo, Isabelle, Charlotte, Marie-Jo, Lisa, and on and on, but I gotta say when it comes to those torching vibes K.D. has always been, outstanding! (and oh! Béatrice, Natasha, Louise, and of course Martine!)

I was at her Ingenue Redux concert in Melbourne yesterday. Had flown in from Singapore just to listen to her live. The sound system at the Plenary Hall let her down a little but she was still great. By the way, her hair appeared a little longer on this tour and I like it. I am thinking of seeing her in Sydney again next week...hmm...should I? 😀
Saw her at the Boulder Theater. A somewhat small intimate venue. Not sure of the year, but right after her first album with the Reclines was released. Loved that album and the show was spectacular.
'Absolute Torch & Twang is an absolute masterpiece!!!!!!! I have it on Cd but would have not been able to find it on vinyl anywhere. Anyone have any idea where I can track it down?
I have it on cassette tape, cd and vinyl. I got them all back in the early 1990's when they were everywhere. Torch and Twang is a fantastic album, but Engenue is my favorite. So many memories. She is authentically rare and gifted in her vocal expression, heartfelt and sincere. I so love k.d. Lang!
WHY didn't K D make it BIG with that awesome VOICE! I have watched her since she started and wore that dress with jeans. I am always amazed that someone with a voice like that is not HUGE! Johnny Carson had her on numerous times and he would not have done that if he didn't think the same. I STILL love your music!!!!!!
It's my opinion that Nashville was willing to forego her OBVIOUS talent because of her sexual orientation. What a shame because she absolutely blew away everyone with that voice. It's timeless... nothing on today's mainstream country stations can hold a candle to her.
Not only is her performance extraordinary, it is timeless. This performance is 35 years old, and doesn't lose an ounce of quality.
Magnificent! Not only does she have a voice of silk and velvet, but you can feel the emotion of the song coming through each word.
