Part of the issue was that early game it wasn't very good. The remakes correct this a bit and it's at least on par with the fighter and thief albeit without armor.
A Master is actually stronger when not equipped with anything. It's based off the Monk class in Dungeons and Dragons, whose fists do far more damage than any weapon in the game.
You're spot on about that! However, in my, I'd say 30yrs of playing Final Fantasy probably 15x through and through, you cannot start off the Black Belt without a weapon. You do actually have to equip him with a set of wooden nunchucks. Maybe around L5, un-equip him with his nunchucks and see how many pts he looses. If it's by lets say 2 or 3, then it's time to drop his weapon and start using his fists. But yes, you are correct. Back in the late 90s, I actually killed Chaos in one hit with my Grand Master!
On my old original NES cart I have a party with a level 40+ Master who dealt over 8,000 damage to an Imp around Castle Corneria, lol. I also 1-shotted Chaos one day by casting Haste on him and he did over 2K damage. BB/Master is the best character in the game even if he sucks a little for the first few hours of the playthrough.
What are your final stats on this one? Mine were Knight LV 50 WPN:Excalibur Armor:Ribbon,Aegis Shield,Dragon Armor,ProRing STR 69 DAMAGE 79 AGL 51 HIT 192 INT 50 ABSORB 67 VIT 58 EVADE 87 LUCK 53 MASTER LV 50 WPN-Nothing Armor-Nothing STR, AGI, INT, and LUCK: 54 VIT: 69 DAMAGE 100 HIT 152 ABSORB 50 EVADE 102 Still working on my 2 Red Wiz's I have. They are a pain in the ass&always took the longest to get perfect levels. If one got only 1 base stat @ Lv 20, they BOTH got 1 stat... T_T
@MAZZ0Murder What stats raise when you gain a level is random, so if the Black Belt/Master's Str never raised, for example, it could take a few more hits. If Str raised very often, one hit is definitely possible.
In the NES version Monks always gain stamina upon level up; the rest of them just seem to increase every few levels or such Also in the NES version unarmed Monks get attack power based on their level; not their strength Promoted classes don't get any stat changes in this version except for Masters getting less magic defence GROWTH (1 instead of 4) In other words Monks are best staying as monks for all their levels; Warriors and Thieves should be KO'd so they will be 7 or 8 levels behind; just enough to get the maximum spell charges when they do promote
YOu didn't show us your stats, which leaves many to speculate. However, I leveled my Black Belt/MASTER up to 50 as well, making sure he got ALL stats when he leveled up. I would use Save State, and save right before I chose the enemy to hit. Then I'd press attack once more to initiate the battle sequence. The timing at which you hit that final "attack" button is what determines what stats they get&you're able to abuse it instead of just hitting reset over&over which takes forever. Perfect stats.
@ncsu195 Armor and Weapons only weaken a master. It actually lowers Damage and Hit% dealing less damage and less hits (on the NES Version that is, not sure about the revised versions).
Ive seen a video of someone doing it, when the stars align and you cast fast on him, he can do close to 2000 damage. 1 round is all it will take if your luck is right
black belts rape with their fists. i remeber maxing them out and doing some massive crit damage lol. i could never find my way around the stupid sand castle, i kept finding weapons or stairs. crazy shit made me quit playing lol
What's this eye trick you're talking about, that has a lot of EXP? I'm in the Cave behind the waterfall in the room with the Robot (I THINK he gives you a cube) I mostly use the booby-trap chest that has mummies for exp. I use the Golems in here, the Nightmares&the Mummies (just use Mage Staff for Fire 2 to kill them quickly) until I get a high enough level that the blue mummies run&then I fight Golems. Master&Knight LV 50 both dead 2 Red Wiz: Both LV 38, 1 left alive to level faster :)
Lol yes they are. GOL and MUDGOL They are huge golems in the original NES version. I don't recall where I got the floater from unless... well where is the "ice cave"? Which continent and near which town or landmark? :) Thank you for helping.
8 years too late but the ice cave is north of creacent lake, the town in the southeast part of the worldmap. The ice cave is only reachable by canoe through the river channels that are near crescent lake.
Hmm well I appreciate that you replied after four months anyway. It's not "hacked." He might have used save-states, where he saved his position in an emulator so he could i.e. start over from a convenient position after dying in the Ice Cave.
1.) This is hacked. 2.) If it wasn't hacked I wouldn't be impressed. Master is fucking epic. I had a lev47 back in the day on my NES taht did about 3k with FAST, used to hunt warmechs back then. good times.
TECHNICALLY, you didn't kill Chaos in 2 hits. You killed him with 18 hits. First round was 10-hits, second round was 8-hits. But still, Black Belt/Master = WIN!
any human being with a life would go nuts before they got a one character master game up to this level. Also, the Ice Cave is p. much impossible in single player games.
The other classes that I tried, even Fighter/Knight, sometimes got only 1 base stat. If they got at LEAST 2 base stats, it was possible (In my book) to get all 5 stats by abusing the save-state IF they got at least 2 base stats like... I dunno str and vit (mostly Fighter got these). If they only got STR or only got VIT or something... it wasn't worth it. Best 4/5. SOME levels, they got NOTHING as a base stat!! Easier to get best 4/5 here too and move on. MASTER got perfect level every time :D
The godhand. The black belt/monk/master is the least popular class whenever I see an FF1 character poll, but it was always my favorite.
it was op dude
It is a well earned OP. Figuring how ASS the BB/Monk is most the game.
Part of the issue was that early game it wasn't very good. The remakes correct this a bit and it's at least on par with the fighter and thief albeit without armor.

I love the music that plays when you're paused brings back so many memories
the music sounds like youre playing on a tv thats like 30 years old

i see chaos wasnt worth a turd because he wasnt worthy of witnessing anus's sphincter attack.
A lot of people know that at lvl 40-50 the master is like a god causing around 1000-1900 dmg per hit but this is cool
Absolute unit.
What are your final stats on this one?
Mine were

iv heard the master or black blat can beat Chaos in 1 hit
Ive seen a video of someone doing it, when the stars align and you cast fast on him, he can do close to 2000 damage.
1 round is all it will take if your luck is right
The virgin Chaos vs the chad solo Black Belt
Not surprised at all.
black belts rape with their fists. i remeber maxing them out and doing some massive crit damage lol. i could never find my way around the stupid sand castle, i kept finding weapons or stairs. crazy shit made me quit playing lol
Here's a little trick I learned. Give your master the masmune and he can kill Chaos in 1 round.
Awesome job killing Chaos though!
It's possible to One Punch Man bosses in the original. If he'd have dealt a high critical Chaos would have went from VERYICAL to HORIZONTAL lol.
What's this eye trick you're talking about, that has a lot of EXP?

Go Black Belts! ^_~
Huge fan of FF series =)
That's what I always wondered. Can the black belt/master defeat chaos single-handedly? Yes he can! :D
Hmm well I appreciate that you replied after four months anyway. It's not "hacked." He might have used save-states, where he saved his position in an emulator so he could i.e. start over from a convenient position after dying in the Ice Cave.
That's nuts. Must have taken a hell of a long time to level up alone like that. What weapon are you using or are you using fists?
Big Block Productions It's Fist Only. If You Use Weapon On Monk. You will Have Low Damage.
Wow nice
The sound quality of the emulator is absolutely hideous
Supposedly if you get the black belt even higher he could defeat him in one round XD
Lvl 50 is the cap on nes
1.) This is hacked.
2.) If it wasn't hacked I wouldn't be impressed. Master is fucking epic. I had a lev47 back in the day on my NES taht did about 3k with FAST, used to hunt warmechs back then. good times.
How cute
The hell's going on with the sound?
TECHNICALLY, you didn't kill Chaos in 2 hits. You killed him with 18 hits. First round was 10-hits, second round was 8-hits. But still, Black Belt/Master = WIN!
I think if you used Giant Glove or w/e it's called, you'd do it in one series of attacks. Still two rounds thanks to set-up lol.
In the nes version saber spell are useless

what is the best weapon for a black belt?"
Samuel Rodrigues No, Just Use your Fist Only. If you Use Weapon. Then Your Damage will be Low.
ANUS! AAAAAAAAAAAA!
Kaboom
2 hits and you're out of the game.
