The “he made a 54 yarder against the Rams” thing feels so similar to Lions fans being angry that we moved on from Jamaal Williams and low and behold we went out and upgraded. I’m not high on Badgley and I’m kind of tired of the kicker carousel. I think if Bates has a solid FG% inside of 50 plus his leg. He’s an easy upgrade over Badgley.
Being solide from 50+ would be a big separator between Bates and Badgley, but like Hamza pointed out he’s also got to be money from inside the 40s as well. And the latter could prove to be more important to this coaching staff
@PrideofDetroit I think the thing worth considering with Badgely is, I think there was a reason we moved on from him to begin with. More so than Dan Campbell just being Dan Campbell on 4th down and it was just a lack of trust and faith in the kicking game. Which Badgely has slowly developed but I think it's too little too late for him. Money inside the 40's is like a given for an NFL kicker. You better be able to do that so I think that's a low bar for standard at the kicking position, not that kicking is easy mind you. Bates may not be the kicker of 2024-25 but I believe that this staff believes he'll at least be the kicker of 2025-26 with the contract he was offered basically saying to me, we think you can do it. Go earn it. As far as development Badgely has undoubtedly done that but 8 years experience and not too many season worth of "we trust you" from different coaching staffs including the Lions. I see it as far more probable that Bates if he isn't already, developing that 40 or less game quicker than Badgely is from kicking 40 up. He is who he is as a kicker and Bates has much more potential.
I’m more tired of “fan favorites”. I remember people insisting Kellen Moore was going to supplant Stafford.
This video is interesting given what happened about 2 hours ago.
You guys forgot about ST changes, the ability to drop it inside the 5 consistently on kickoffs will be a big advantage for teams. Also kickers will have to tackle, heard something like 30% of kickoffs will involve the kicker in the tackle.
like the guy in the middle's shirt
THE PRESEASON IS KEY, AS YOU SAID, HOW MANY KICKS WILL HE GET TO MAKE?
No. He’s a camp tryout. Holmes has made a valiant effort to create competition at every level. Campbell might not be a Super Bowl coach, as in he might always game plans that prevent that, but someone will some day find doing what Holmes has found a few key guys you should keep in the mix.
Morgan knows what's up. That's what's real......
I don't buy into the notion that if it comes down to a long FG to win a game than others are to blame. FG kickers are paid the MAKE FG's! Case closed.
And what are the other players paid to do?
It's not just about having a BIG leg
It's about having confidence in your kicker, which DC obviously does not. If he did, he would have used him halfway through the third quarter of the 49ers game instead of going for it the 28 instead of kicking a 45 yard FG that would have put you up 27-10, that's THREE scores.
But no, we don't kick the FG or get the first down. 10 plays and 4 minutes later, we're tied 24-24.
It has drastically more to do with confidence in a defense than a kicker. Read that every day till you understand it. When a defense has problems especially pass defense it doesn't matter when a team kicks a field goal when the other team scores a touchdown their next drive. That's how you lose 16 to 27. There are plenty of situations that work as reasons why to be aggressive and kick a field goal, like before the end of the first half.
@GulNadar don't tell me what to understand, ya nonce!
Bates is who I would pick because he has a great leg Badgley don't Bates is special
I've always wondered why kickers get paid so little. There are very few that are good at it. They lead the team in scoring for crying out loud. [That's kind of important]
You’re not wrong. It’s definitely a head scratcher that kickers don’t get paid a little more handsomely
lol. You realize the best kicker in the game, Tucker, makes more than Cominsky, Davenport and Amik on average, right?
And all kickers do is kick (that’s kind of important too). They don’t do any of the grinding work fringe roster players do.
Good ones are paid exceptionally for what they do.
He sat behind a guy that got drafted I’m pretty sure
Lol....everyone trying to bury Badge. The same guy who makes clutch kick after clutch kick in, you know, REAL NFL GAMES. Including a laser guided missile from 54 in the playoffs that split the uprights with precision accuracy with a good 10 Yards to spare.
He has already dispatched of Turner, next man to the curb is Jake Bates, who has never kicked a FG in an NFL or college game.
You'll see. Badge will be the last man standing come September.
Badgley, overall, was not reliable 40 yards and beyond, which contributed to Campbell choosing to go for it on so many 4th downs (that and he has brass balls) and I really hope Bates gets coached up and beats out Badgley. If Badgley keeps the starting job, Kicker will remain the weakest position on the roster.
In two seasons with Detroit Badgley has gone 9/11 (82%) on FGs between 40-49 yds. He’s gone 2/3 from 50+ yards. So If you add in total he’s now 11/14 (79%) from 40+. Overall I think Hamza’s point stands that Badgley is and has been a solid kicker for Detroit and Bates is going to have to show he can be more consistent than from both ranges to win the starting job
Perhaps my expectations are too high from when they had Matt Prater and the immortal Jason Hanson!
First
Michael Badgley is terrible!
Yet he was kept by a “good team” while Bates was cut by a good team and kicked in the nothing league.
Do yourself a massive favor. Stop falling in love with these scrubs like Rodríguez or Bates.
They’re just guys. There are hundreds you can fall in love with. It doesn’t make them good players.
