Speaking to the deleted categories, specifically middle grade...I find it interesting that the last year that middle grade had its own category Rick Riordan won, as he had every single time in the category. He then released a statement asking goodreads to not feature any of his books on the list so that someone else could have a chance. The last two years he didn't have a release. This year he had two releases, a cowritten and a solo and they eleminate the category. It's probably not vindictive but kind of smacks a little of it.
I never knew this omg that's crazy what the heck??? 🤨😭😭😭
That horror category is STACKED. Every POC author's book in horror was a BANGER this year. I will be happy if any one of them gets it!
I honestly would like to see more categories - Manga/Manwha/Manua a category, webnovels, graphic novels, comics, urban fantasy, paranormal romance, rofan (romantasy), YA broken into the romance, fantasy, and sci fi categories and non fic; same with middle grade....
Another thing i find interesting: If GR is meant for marketing, why do they always allow the same authors to win. Most people who read fantasy know about Brando Sando, everyone who reads horror knows about Stephen King. Books with a gazillion ratings won't sell very hard anymore as people have already read it. So nominating lesser known books and authors that a lot of people maybe haven't heard about feels more efficient marketing-wise?
I’d say that if they have an issue with picture/middle grade causing stir because of challenging/banning the same might apply to graphic novels.
Also, as a librarian it never fails to shock me how many people in my own profession believe manga/graphic novels are ‘kids’ things. So it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s a thing too.
I always love when you do these videos. Your discussions are always so interesting. I'm still boggled by the categories they got rid of that I didn't even notice the absence of some books from the other categories that you talked about. ❤❤
I was so confused when I couldn’t find the comics and graphic novels category. It’s so sad that they’ve pushed it out.
Love this discussion! Also I'm here to say that I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself is FANTASTIC! It is weird and strange and beautiful and uncomfortable and I was SHOCKED that it was nominated because it has less than 700 reviews. I know it won't win but I love these kind of shocking picks because it gets more eyes on cool books. I would sing that book's praise always! I hope people pick it up and give it a chance because it was so unique.
I just came to say that I picked up Looking for Jane at my library when I hadn’t heard about it at all but anything to do with women’s rights/abortion/forced adoption/unwed mothers homes is a micro genre that I read in a LOT. This was one of my favorite reads this year and I am sad that it wasn’t advertised better for the content it holds. You guys are right it gives that wwII cover vibe but it was so much more!!!
I don't think authors should be allowed more than one book per category. Like if someone else a chance that's not really fair.
No more Picture Books, no more Middle Grade, no more Poetry, no more Graphic Novels, but Humor can stay??? 👁👄👁
And Horror really gave what it needed to give, so many good Latine/Indigenous picks 😭💅💫
I'm not surprised that they got rid of childrens and middle grade. When they condensed them into one category, i already had my suspicions as that is usually the first step
Historical fiction: I'm surprised to see Weyward on here. I haven't read it, but based on vibes (so same criterion as GR), i expected it to go in fantasy. I'm glad it's here. Also, where's the new one by Ken Follett. Maybe it's not recent history enough 🙄
Im pretty angry at the missing categories at a time when we need to champion and fight for picture, MG book, and graphic novels.
I like the title « It was an ugly couch anyway». Unruly is written by a very funny english comedian
I do miss MG as a category.
3 non-fiction categories but I still miss the science and technology category they axed last year
I need Warrior Girl Unearthed to win. It was one of my best reads of the year.
ok, here are my thoughts:
Yes, to T Kingfisher, Tress
Boo, no graphic novels. I love looking at that section.
for the auto bio, Britney and Prince Harry for sure. I haven't read it yet but the Eddie Ndopu one would have been good to see, but sadly no one considers disabilities worth talking about or interesting. That kind of stings a bit, but that's how it goes.
Romance: I understand what you're saying about Emily Henry going to win, but i also think that Rebecca Yarros could win this category if all the Fourth Wing fans who maybe don't read contemporary romance vote for her
I read The Hanging City, great book ,gave it a 4 star, but it doesn't belong in romantisy.
The categories that were the most diverse by my count were historical fiction, horror and young adult... le sigh
fyi Check & Mate also has LGBTQIA+ rep - the main character is bisexual & one of the side characters is also either bisexual or a lesbian
i think them removing graphic novels and comics was the right call. it's not a genre, it's a medium. especially when they started incorporating manga-esque stuff in them? yeah no. manga should either be in it's own category or mixed among other /genres/ when appropriate. there is horror manga, there is romance manga, there is fantasy, sci-fi, anything you want. same with graphic novels. this whole idea that it should be separate just upsets me. it's the same issue as ppl saying oh, i don't watch anime cause it's cartoons and cartoon are for children. it's not a genre, it's a medium. it has genres within it. it should never have been a separate category to begin with.
