90 is a good age, especially when you consider how deep he was involved in the '60s and '70s music scene. RIP Mr. Mayall.

By all accounts, he was less of a 'sex and drugs' guy than many others. Anyway, it's still fantastic that he led such a long and rich life:)

I last saw him in concert in 2015 in Graz, Austria. Before the concert starts, we come to the foyer of the hall to buy a T-shirt and next to the T-shirt counter there was a CD stand. And then shock, Mr John Mayall himself was selling CDs and he was very pleasant and completely down to earth and not at all arrogant (unlike some stars), chatting with everyone with great pleasure.

Back To The Roots is the first album of his I bought and it being at the moment. Still one of my favorites as it highlighted some of John's keyboard/piano playing to me. My cousin, John, introduced the Bluesbreaker album to the oft-mentioned older brother and me. They played it constantly and had my brother periodically repeating the graffiti mantra of the day "Clapton is God". Had most of the albums that John issued from the mid-60s through the 70s. A musician whose impact was not just him individually but was magnified by the talent he found and highlighted that move forward elsewhere in their careers. Truly the godfather of British blues. Thanks to you, Pete, for once again providing a heartfelt tribute to another great musician so many of us enjoy. And thanks to John Mayall for all that great music. RIP.

the Bingo album, I believe was the first use of Marshall amps, which made the sound so loud and stinging....not a big Clapton fan, but loved Mayall's enthusiasm and experimentation ...especially the late 60's albums....and he released a standalone track "i''m Your Witch Doctor" later covered by Motorhead...so he stretched genres and generations...a true Renaissance Man ...RIP

Nice tribute, Pete: thank you. There was no-one more central to the British blues boom than John Mayall. I had the good fortune to hear a fine version of the Bluesbreakers in the mid-90s at a small club here in North East England and the charisma and talent of their main man just filled the room. Luckily he's left behind a massive legacy of recordings to keep his memory alive for many years to come.

    Some additional info:
    - Peter Green had played with Mayall prior to joining the Bluesbreakers. When Clapton took a sabatical to go play on the continent (they ended up in Greece) with friends, three guitarists took turns filling his spot with Mayall. Green, who did three gigs, was thinking the gig was his, so was extremely upset when Clapton returned after several weeks and reclaimed his spot in the band (Mayall had promised it would be his upon his return). As a result Green was reluctant to join Mayall when Clapton quit.
    - Prior to Clapton's departure to form Cream, a young Mick Taylor filled in for him when he was a no-show at a gig in north London. Clapton's Marshall amp and Les Paul were onstage but he was missing. So after the first set Taylor, urged on by his mates, offered his services. Mayall asked if he knew the tunes...and he picked up Clapton's guitar and played a set that highly impressed the bandleader. However, Taylor left before Mayall could get his contact info. So when Clapton quit, Mayall, who apparently wanted Taylor didn't know who he was or how to get ahold of him. So he called Green, who played hard to get.
    - Taylor was aware of Green's departure, and when he saw an anonymous ad in the Melody Maker seeking a guitarist for a top blues band he knew who it was and applied to audition. His first album with the band was 'Crusade', on which he excelled, most notably on instrumentals 'Driving Sideways' and 'Snowy Wood', the latter being his own composition.
    - Taylor also appeared on the studio albums 'Bare Wires' and 'Blues From Laurel Canyon'. He is also on the live 'Diary of a Band - Vols One and Two'.
    - IMO Taylor is at his best on 'I Started Walking' ('Bare Wires') and the live version of that track where drummer Jon Hiseman pushes Taylor from start to finish. What a killer track.
    - Though 'A Hard Road' with Green has Aynsley Dunbar drumming - he then went to the Jeff Beck Group for a short stint and the single 'Tallyman'/'Rock My Plimsoul' - and he appears on a couple singles, Mick Fleetwood was also onboard for gigs and some singles during the Green era. One of those singles was named 'Fleetwood Mac'. Go listen to the excellent 'So Many Roads' and 'It Hurts Me Too'. Green, Fleetwood and John McVie are also onboard for 'Live in London 1967', three CDs (thus far) of gigs recorded by a fan and cleaned up by Mayall. They reveal just how ripping a player Green was, which is not so evident on 'A Hard Road'.
    - Now, back to Clapton being a no-show at the gig Taylor stepped up for. Clapton - by his own admission a self-centred arrogant jerk at the time - had gone to the Marquee to see the Loving Spoonful. (Coincidentally, the red Les Paul named 'Lucy' that he gave to George Harrison previously belonged to the Loving Spoonful's John Sebastian. It started as a sunburst with a Bigsby. Rick Derringer of the McCoys (and later with Johnny and Edgar Winter) purchased it, had it refinished in red and the Bigsby removed. Given that his is of relatively small stature he possibly had the (typically large) neck shaved down for his smaller hands. Whatever, he disliked the result and put the guitar back up for sale. Clapton purchased it when touring with Cream. He like thin necks. He would later play it on the Beatles' 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', after being invited to play on the track whilst enroute to the studio with Harrison. I believe that Peter Frampton also played it on Doris Troy's 'Ain't That Cute' after being brought 'round to the studio to meet Harrison. The Beatle, producing the session, invited Frampton to play on the track. After playing rhythm for a few bars Harrison insisted that Frampton play lead and that he, Harrison, would handle rhythm.
And on and on these anecdotes roll....

Anyway another video if you can find I haven’t seen it in a while, John perform couple years ago at Peter Green Tribute concert thing from couple years ago, anyway at that time in his late 80s his playing is still amazing for that age.
