I feel like a numb-nut now. I've been doing it manually, with a pen tool and settings on stroke. If I had known there was a write-on effect, I would have saved some time. I'm now prehistoric and extinct. In saying that, does this help with choppy animation? When I do flourishes or curvy lines with reveals, the timing happens to go choppy at the end.
I'm just learning AE. This tutorial is from 2012. Can't this be done in the newer AE versions just by using the trim path properties from the animate menu, instead of having to redraw the shapes?
Excellent tutorial. thanks... may I offer one tip back? Don't use the spacebar to preview like you did at 10:47: AE isn't designed for realtime playback like a video editor. Use 'RAM' preview instead: Zero on the NUMERIC keypad.
It nice. I think "trim path" will give us more smooth animation with only two key frames. Am I correct? Please discuss the difference between "trim path" and "write on".
That was helpful but I wish this was 2 minutes long instead. Since all you need to know is to use the WRITE-ON effects, and then place the brush with keyframes with the appropriate size over your shape.
I'm learning AE, and I'm trying to have a square "drawn on" in AE. I did everything you did, What am I doing wrong? This semi worked for me. I drew over my square with the write-on tool, and when I went to preview it, it only revealed the corners. It's like it revealing a circle instead of the box I drew.
I've been looking for something helpful for my project for about a week and when I searched "leaves growing" nothing good came out! I don't know how I made it to this video but thank you so much!
there is something wrong with my initial composition settings I can't even resize all the videos so that the length of the composition is longer i don't have seconds i have f im assuming frames. I can't even go forward in time/frames so i can't move the brush strokes
Thank you for this tutorial! I have one question.. If I want to import more images that I designed in Illustrator to AfterEffects, to get a kind of whiteboard animiation story, do I have to import each image in one AfterEffects file, or must I, after making each animation, covert it and then put it together in one file? I'm afraid that when I put it all in one file to do this animation to each image, I get lost in the layers..
4:10 what ? What's wrong at that specific minute of the video ? What are you trying to indicate ? What's your overall question about that particular part of the video ?
Ive been working all morning trying to find a concise, straightforward tutorial on how to do this, and I had to come across a lot of stinkers before I came across yours! Thank you!! Great video. IF i may make one suggestion, it would be to open a video with the product of the tutorial BEFORE you go ahead and run us through the process. That way if we don't understand what the "DRAW ON" effect produces, you'll be addressing those of us who are completely naive. :)

This helped me out! Thanks! :)
Thank you so much.
Thanks a lot :) Have a good day !!!
why wouldn't you attach it to a path?
Very Helpful. Thank you.
does the file need to have all separate layers? mine is all just on one layer
If you want multiple elements to "reveal" at their own unique pace (which is preferred), yes.
My Hero. Thanks!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!
