That footage from 1896 made me curious enough to do a cursory Google search on Victorian aquariums, and apparently there was something of an aquarium craze in the latter half of the 19th century thanks to the opening of large public aquariums in big cities. These tanks would usually have glass fronts and wooden sidings held together with cast iron and sealed with pitch and yes, apparently it was around this time that goldfish became a popular pet in North America. Tbh, even the smallest bowls I saw in Victorian portraits/photos seem bigger than what tiktok influencers shove their poor unfortunate bettas into. Their ancestors must be shaking their heads at their .5 gallon tanks from their graves.

I have never paid attention to fish hobby before, but now that I am, I realized something interesting:
Fish hobby is extremely advanced compared to many other pet keeping hobby such as rodents, reptiles and even cats. Yet simultaneously fish seems to be the most abused pets.
It seems to be rather equally divided to horrible keepers, average keepers and passionate keepers while other pets are on the average keeper being the biggest group and the abusers and passionate people are smaller in numbers.
Maybe I'm imagining it, but the more I get to know this hobby, the more I see this pattern.
(By average keepers I mean people with overall satisfactory to good/great quality of life for their pet, but are not delving any deeper to the hobby to improve even further)

@@plantedlife It’s a little different for bettas since they often don’t have a lot of swimming room in the wild anyway, because if it’s a thriving community of bettas, the population density will be pretty high and they each have their own little territories. What ends up happening sometimes is that bettas will stay in a very small area their whole lives in the wild, at least is what I’ve heard. Each individual betta’s territory can be a little as a few gallons, or even less.
Also, and this is true for many (not all though) types of pet fish, not just bettas: if we take care of the fish properly, their living conditions will be better and much more stable that what they’d get in the wild. They’d be subject to less stressors and live much longer. I’m sure you already know this, but I’m just mentioning it because these are the reasons I can feel good about keeping my little female betta in her planted ten gallon. She wouldn’t survive in the wild anyway, she’s completely fearless and has zero sense of self preservation if it means there’s a nonzero chance of her getting a bite to eat 😂

True story: my friend actually did this w gold fish for her daughters 7th birthday party. She set up a table and had tiny dollar store containers. She had a lot of cheap goldfish and gave them out as party presents. I tried to go home and buy a tank and set it up that day to help this poor fish. It cost me almost $100 for this 'gift' and the poor fish died days later despite my efforts. I realize now I knew nothing about gold fish, but I definitely tried. Silver lining: most of the fish remained unspoken for after the party, so a friend of ours took them home and put them into his unstocked pond on his farm. The fish live to this day and are large and seemingly happy. I didn't find out he was doing this until weeks later unfortunately.

I got it at Ross for $20, but when it broke after my Beta died and I was cleaning it, I tried to replace it, I couldn't find another. I got a bowl heater and I had all these live plants and I had this Beta that I had for 4 or 5 years that would build a bubble nest every day. My friends had goldfish at their wedding, it was a part of the bride's culture's tradition, My ex and I had an empty tank at home so we were the ones who took the fish home, and the damn things had Ick and we couldn't save them.

It is a big problem when you want to be a fish breeder, because fungus can grow over tho eggs and kill them. Now golden axos are yes that color and sand i prefer for axos as they tend to eat pebbles or stones that are barely mouthsized. Ik alot of people complain about it but i use to breed axos and its better to have a soil or sand setup as my old axos loved looking for food /foraging for food as they are ambush predators....like most aquatic. Predatory animals.i noticed my axos will dig in the substrate to find whats in the substrate. Worms fish whatever was hiding thwy would dig away the sand and dirt to find if its prey. Now axos i will never suggest to be in anything less even for 1. I'd say a 15gal would be minimum while 30 is max for one as they need shallow set up as they prefer shallows instead of depth. Axos will commonly predatebon each other if theres no food or not enough food for each other and yess thet are aware of each others abilities

I bred kribensis in a tank that i never clean. It's a planted tank full of algae and detritus and they're a good source of food for the fry. I only do 30-40% water change every month and never scrape the glasses nor syphon out the dirt on the substrate. The fry grew quicker than in the sterile environment. That being sad, i dont think that convict cichlid tank is a breeding tank nor a show tank, but algae and detritus is not a bad thing in a tank, it just looks unsightly

I worked in PetCetera waaaay back in the day and you would not believe how many trashy people would be trying to buy fish for wedding centrepieces. I refused to even sell them a plastic fish every single time.
One time a co-worker did sell like 20 bettas to some moron couple and then they tried to return the fish that didn't die or get taken by guests like a week later. They thought they could just "rent" the fish and get their money back. We took the fish back but certainly didn't refund them.

That's a golden albino axolotl morph. Axolotls can be on fine sand after they are 4-5 inches in length because they'll no longer get impacted by sand, but as babies it's deadly to them. I have axolotls and they are really lovely animals.

Sand is alright for axolotls. I just thought you should know. You can't use gravel, rocks, etc. Only sand or bare.

Chirs!!! Try Maggi cake. I know you love Indian Maggi and you've got to try this, it's basically leftover Maggie. So, make Maggi and don't make it too soupy, make it kind of thick and saucy and put it in the fridge overnight and UGH it's heavenly.

Ngl I hate that any decently sized glass bowls have become collectively known as 'fishbowls'. Every time I hear the phrase I cringe. Like, no. Fish should not be intrinsically linked to the idea of them living in a decorative bowl!!!
