    Bob, even from this video I realized what a kind hearted person you are (I had no doubts anyway❤️). Because in this video, you want someone else's video to be watched, not your own. If it was someone else, make sure he wouldn't do such a thing because he wants his own video to be watched, liked, etc. And you should know that I think most people, myself included, watch this channel not only to learn English, but also because they want to learn English from a kind and gentle person. We all love you so much!💕🌺💖

    I am a new immigrant in Canada. Actually my English is not good, but I never afraid to speak to my Canadian co-workers, because most of the Canadian guys are so nice and patient, they will listen and ask question to make sure they full understand me, or slow down and use some very simple vocabulary to tell me what to do just in case I misunderstand them.

    Comprehensible input can be a double-edged sword. It’s easier to practice input skills and get better at them. There’s nothing wrong about it in the sense that if you want to understand a language, you need to receive a lot of input. However, only relying on that at the expense of output skills is when this method becomes problematic. And you’ll find it frustrating when you think you’ve learned enough about the language to use it, but then feel very limited trying to express yourself or get a simple idea out. I learned that the hard way. Thank you Christian. Thank you Bob.

    • @LearnEnglishwithBobtheCanadian
      @LearnEnglishwithBobtheCanadian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think, for me, the concern I have is when it (Comprehensible input) is advocated as the best and only method to learn English, especially if someone is trying to sell a course based on this approach. What is lost is that learning English is a journey, and each step along the way should present new challenges, new learning methodology, and new techniques.
      There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to learning English. It should be a series of steps, each a bit more difficult than the last, expanding into all areas that a language learner wants to master. The biggest problem I see with language learning is that people become comfortable at a certain level and it is really easy to stay there. If you become comfortable at an "input only" level (and this does happen), it becomes very challenging to improve or move on to practicing your output.
      This is common in many school language programs. Students are taught to read and listen a lot, but rarely challenged to write or speak. They then naturally become very good at reading and understanding the language, but this does not translate into an ability to speak it. I say this as someone who has taught the French language for over 20 years. If students do not practice their reading and writing they do not become proficient at it.
      Ok. I think I've said enough! I hope this all makes sense!

    I would like to add one more point because so many people when they starting to study English they put a deadline and after a while, they realize that it wasn't like what they plan to be and they keep complaining about the ways that how they study.
    I think comparing your language with others is a big frustration most English learners fall into it. We all know some learners study a long time to speak fluently and we have to understand we are different and we have different abilities.

    I agree with Dr. Stephen Krashen, who said: “We acquire language in only one way. When we understand what people say and when we understand what we read."
    For instance, I can not acquire birds language 🤔,
    but I can acquire a little English from Bob's lessons 😊.

    • @LearnEnglishwithBobtheCanadian
      @LearnEnglishwithBobtheCanadian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I guess my worry about any "input only" method is twofold:
      1) Many people who want to make money teaching English advocate an "input only" method that will bring fluency in a rapid amount of time. They misinterpret to some degree what Krashen in advocating and try to sell these quick and easy passive methods of learning which in my opinion are just a money grab.
      2) Teachers who embrace "input only" learning early on in a students journey many times become too lax and they forget to move onto output, simply favouring reading and listening because it makes for easy class planning.
      In my opinion early learners do need lots of input learning. Most of my viewers, at the level I speak, are at the point where practicing output becomes vital to their progress.

    I think that first, when you start learning a language, you should receive as much input as you can for some time and then start producing the language as well, but I believe that you won't be able to produce it if you don't know how it is written or how it sounds. Afterwards, the combination of the four skills are essential to master a language

    there are a lot of views about this topic. There´s so many english youtubers that say "only the comprehensible input will make you get the language", I think that´s ok for getting an intermediate level, but if you want to master the language, you need to practice every single skill (just like you have said). Thanks for your advices Bob.

    • @LearnEnglishwithBobtheCanadian
      @LearnEnglishwithBobtheCanadian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree. There are certainly different things that an English learner must do depending on their level. A beginner will focus a lot on reading and listening and acquiring. An intermediate or advanced learner will focus more on long form writing and speaking. It is the natural progression of learning the language. I fear too many get stuck at the beginner level because reading and listening are a very safe and comfortable thing to do. Progress comes from increasing difficulty in all areas.

    It's really hard to find someone to practice English. Some sites and apps are kinda expensive to me, specially because I don't work cause I'm 16. But I speak a lot alone, it's not the best thing to do, but helped me a lot. Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷

    A little fact about Russian soul))
    If American see something like "DON'T WATCH OR DON'T TOUCH", he doesn't do this
    If Chinese see something like that, he doesn't do this
    If Russian see something " You can touch this and etc" he doesn't care, but if we see something with prefix "Not", he is sure to do this, under any circumstances)))

    Bob how a child learn to speak? Comprehension comes first, then speech and writing, for what reason is it not the same thing for us?

    • @LearnEnglishwithBobtheCanadian
      @LearnEnglishwithBobtheCanadian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree it is the same, but I think for some they stay in that mode of learning because it is comfortable. Any claims that language learning should be done a certain way forgets that it is a process of increasing challenges. Sure comprehension comes first, but very quickly it is important to also include writing and speaking or the student and teacher can become very comfortable only doing reading and listening! There is not one way to learn English, there is a series of different ways depending on your level. What works well for a beginner does not work well for an advanced speaker.

    Acquiring your first language VS leaning a new language .. *Why are these two processes different?*
    I wonder why it is that when you are mastering a new language, no matter how large your vocabulary is, you cannot speak the words as naturally as native speakers do?
    No amount of hard, focused studying allows you to attain the level of fluency as if it is your native language.
    Why is that?
    After all when it comes to mastering your native language, it works for 100% of the population.
    As a matter of fact everyone is fluent in their own language, and speaks without an accent.
    I think the key is not some deliberate studying.
    It is something else.
    What do you think about that?
