  • A modular abandoned session : the rooftop
    We witnessed many sunrises lately,
from total darkness, to full Light.
My favorite moment of the day,
    when everything is possible, again.
    Unforgettable experience,
in the middle of the forest,
    on the gentle hill.
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    Creative process
    M e t a p h y s i c a l A l t e r a t i o n
    is a 4 sessions series,
all taking place in the same locality.
I've been following this creative process
    for more than 2 years now ;
    1/ Finding the right place
This first phase can take long weeks of investigation and explorations.
We always have to take in consideration the material we need to transport. Some places are impossible to access discreetly with two large cases, a generator, bags of cable and cameras.
    2/ First Exploration
We never go in if no door is open, even if the place
    was abandoned for decades.
    That’s our number 1 rule;
« If it does not open, it is not your door ».
We first of all visit the entire place, room by room.
Sometimes, the room we chose is a direct revelation, like if the room itself choses us.
At other times, mostly when we are very stressed about the exploration or tired by the journey, we really need to first change our state of consciousness, to let go of everything and finally connect with the place and its layers of stories and histories.
From time to time, the process ends here.
I am always touched by the place’s soul.
    But in some places,
I can feel that we are « disturbing » in a way.
    Deep listening
When exploring, deep listening is at the center of everything.
You are there, silent, in a place you are not supposed to be, where no one is supposed to be, controlling your breathing, attentive and mindful of your environment.
Each sound can be a presence’s indicator.
    Meditation
The meditation takes place in the room we chose.
This meditation, that I am refining each time, is based on different other meditation methods I learned and practiced in the past years.
I can perceive vibrations, sounds, sometimes words, images, flash, physical sensations, but what I feel the most is layers of emotions superposed on each other, taking all the space.
We all have these extra-sensory capacities.
All the exploration is documented with videos, pictures, soundscape recordings, and written notes.
3/ Retranscription : impact on the Creation
    Remembering the past experience.
This stage can take several weeks.
I really need to be totally available, invested, centered and focus.
Most of the pieces’s compositional process starts with an instinctive vocal line or a sequence created on my piano.
Sometimes it can be a texture directly created on my modular synth.
And then everything flows, in a certain direction.
Growing from a simple composition to a full sonic orchestration.
    4/ Layers of Perceptions
We finally come back to the place to perform the piece it was created for, creating different layers of perceptions, past - present - futur, birth - life - death.
The past environment ’s experience influenced the present creation, and the present environment impacts the future interpretation.
We never find the place as we left it, objects move around,
    it is always a surprise.
    All sessions are self-produced.
We are just a little team of 2,
    chalisk and me.

I'm so grateful for the internet for access to people like you in this world, following their instincts and making art which celebrates one's own, unique process......................so awesome to get to experience some of your magic. I may not ever get to fly on a plane again, but in my mind, the perfect trip would be to travel somewhere, with no expectations but to attend a 'live performance' by you........................................

Thank you so much Will 🙏 ✨💜 And i'm so grateful to have met you, and the entire community. I Feel so lucky. Where are you based ? if you can't get a fly, i'll do my best to pass by near where you live when i'll go on tour, when we'll be able to travel freely again.

My wife and I live in a remote, forested area in Western Canada. Very few people - lots of nature......after decades of touring with big rock bands, I'm happy to be in a more calm, centred life. If (because we're not injected) I can never travel again - I'm ok with that. Happy to be where I am.....our tribe here is strong and vibrant........So inspired every time I see that you've uploaded a new adventure............so nice to see (hear) such passion, commitment, talent and individuality alive in you........it reminds me that there is still a bit of inspiring stuff still going on out there......

When I talk about Helene and try to describe her music to my friends, I often refer to her as the "Beethoven of Modular Synthesis". She is such an innovator. It was like she shut down the sequences, and just let the whole patch self oscillate at the end of that piece. She is a true circuit bender! ♥🌹♥🌹👏 Bravo!! Bravissimo!

I just listed to it tonight and I had to follow you up.

Before I listen to your music, I sit in my usual meditation postion, cross legged on a comfortable cushion, centre myself and only then, press play... Today, I climbed into a hot air balloon in a fresh but warm sunrise, as the balloon lifted from the ground and the morning song of the birds rang round my periferal soundscape. Slowly, the higher I rose I began to realise the balloon had metamorphosised into a sky yacht, slowly drifting through the French alps with a gentle breeze filling the sails and wafting my hair... Up and up we slowly rose until levelling out and then slowly decending until, with the birdsong back in my ears, and not even a splash, landed on a beautiful Swiss lake surrounded by a green landscape with vast mountains all around.. gliding oh so slowly slowly, fading back to reality, my journey was over, I was at peace with all of nature and existance. Such a wonderful journey that your music inspires within me. Then I listened again watching the vid this time. Such great locations you chose. After that, I read your notes on your process of how you create your music and chose your locations to make these video's.. I expected nothing less than you described. I truly Love everything that you have produced and not only am I thankful to have found your channel, but I am so much looking forward to parts 3 and 4. Thank you.

I wanted to explain (briefly, if I can) why I called you a MASTER, on a previous video- as I believe the context will prove informative. So here I was, watching about 6 videos of your's... but I'm also a musician, so I also at times naturally hear potential for creating parts in the course of hearing music. For about 4 of these videos I kept thinking, "man... this would be AMAZING if there were HORNS in it", and on the 6th video... you pulled out that clarinet, and... YOU DID IT
My mind was blown, because I knew THIS was what was needed. And then: you did it. And I was like... "HO-LEE SHIIIIIT"
Long story short. You were made for music, and music was made for you. We appreciate your fits of genius :)

I just had a brilliant idea for a Helène Vogelsinger video game, where you roam a post-apocalyptic wasteland exploring ruined buildings and finding lost synth modules. Then you discover places with generators, where you can play ever more complex music as your system grows. It’d be like Fallout or Horizon Zero Dawn combined with VCV Rack. Have your agent call my agent! ;-)

Just discovered your work ... and I love it! No idea why you need all the multicoloured cables ... 'patching' I do understand from early telephone exchanges and pre-digital switchers ... but watching you lean from side to side tweaking and twiddling the pots is fascinating in itself. That, and your interesting choice of locations makes for a full audio/visual experience ... thanks for that. I expect you hate it when listeners draw comparisons, but your work, in my mind, stands alongside one of my favourite Polish composer/piano artists, Hania Rani ... I'm sure you know of her. Dernièrement on a du faire 3 sessions en 1 mois et quelques pour les besoins d'une conférence, c'était quelque chose ! Je les partagerai bientôt. Merci encore, et le Marie's LFO toujours au top et au coeur du patch 💜

I've been listening to your music for a few years now Helene. You have made your own unique style. This piece was longer and a little different from your other songs and you took us on a journey.
Read the description before listening. Thanks for sharing the creative process and your thoughts.
Sitting in my garden and forced myself not to look at the video first time listening. Tried to listen with my eyes closed but once in a while open them and watched a bumblebee on a flower.
    This is meditation ❤

Thank you so much 🙏✨❤ Air was an important part of the inspiration. I forgot to suggest to listen to it closed eyes, with the wind (or a fan) blowing. Thanks a lot again, for traveling with me ❤

I dove into modular after watching a couple of your videos. I am very bad at Eurorack. But peruse it to keep my mind working. This tune is captivating. The concept of places is a great approach for inspiration. You both make a shared experience and then share it. If you ever come to the US, I’ll be there.

I was trying to respond to someone unaware of the modular = real instrument. But they remove the comment. Here are my thoughts:
Modular synthesis is like having to build your instrument every time. Let's pick a string instrument as an example. Not the sound, just how this is made. The instrument characteristic is the sum of simple parts: strings, body shape, materials in general, percussor type, and so on. With modular, you can pick a set of parameters to build a whatever instrument, and the fun part is that you can morph them as you wish. So your parameter can change every ms or 1 minute. Linearly? Exponential? Randomly? No-problemo. You can build a violin that rolls into an arp in response a whatever event you wish. Modular, it's fun yet complex. If you want to know more, I think you can find a large community happy to share.
    Stay inspired. Nothing else matter.
    Thanks, Helene, for your music🧡

Thank you so much for this explanation, and your kind words 🙏 ✨🧡 It can be hard for people out of the modular world to comprehend what's going on, which i can perfectly understand (remembering myself watching for the first time a modular patch in action). Thanks again 🧡 Wishing you a beautiful day and weekend. Take care

    Merci 🙏
