  • www.academystudio.co.uk/keithp... This is a short video showing a very economical replacement treble horn compression driver for a Leslie 145, 122 or any Leslie speaker that normally uses a 16 ohm Jensen V21 type driver. I am currently using one of these in one of my custom Leslie 145's that is driven by a 100 watt RMS Marshall valve amplifier. The results are very good and it sounds fine with my Hammond XK-3c organ that I use for regular gigs. This is an extract from the end of a previous video - with added details

I didn't thread the mahogany adaptor that I made for the V21 bearing mounting plate, as I didn't have a Tap that size. So I bored the hole in my Lathe & then just used Epoxy Resin to secure the driver in place.

I used later type Leslie motors that don't need the idler pulley. "Swain Electronics" might have some ...

keith, on your recommendation I have bought one of these adastra units to replace my fuzzy V20. How did you make the adastra fit the v21 mount, have you threaded it on somehow?

keith, sorry to bother you! i'm almost there with my custom leslie! One question, where would I go about getting an idler pulley for the horn? I have never seen what one looks like or what will do instead?! thanks

When I Googled it, (Adastra 60 watt Compression Driver) it would appear that they are discontinued, but I only tried for a short while.

Dear Keith, have you ever tried the Jensen treble drivers that came out before the V21? I recently spoke to a guy who really tried every speaker he could find and he told me that the best ever treble driver in his opinion is the Jensen that was built into those tall boy Leslies from the 1940s. They were slightly bigger and had a red label on them (instead of the blue label of the V21). I thought that, maybe, it would be interesting to try one ...

Apart from that, the Atlas PD5VH is the best replacement treble driver for the V21 I've heard so far.

@@hammondvoodoo9555 i've got a 31h original here and it has a very old V21 in it... looks nothing like the later ones... but it's still a V21... and yea, the Atlas horns were awesome, and I had one in a 147 that I played out for years with a 200 watt amp hooked up to it and never blew it! and it was brutally loud! In fact, my old drummer still has nerve deafness in his right ear! lol
