Pathway drive sounds like a variation on transwarp or slipstream if i'm honest.
Maybe without the need for transwarp hubs or those crystals the slipstream drive needed. 🤷‍♂️

I have a feeling it's based on stament's research but it uses a completely different mode. Or it's a super energy efficient transwarp-like drive

Stammets is the guild navigator in Dune. The silly idea of using a spore drive to begin with proves the new showrunners of Disco don't actually do science. Magic mushroom drive makes the ship Q, allowing it to be anywhere instantly, but in the 32nd century, they also can beam anywhere like Q. As Clarke said, 'Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic'.
The problem is the tech from 2257 makes no sense at all. They should have just killed the whole oh the guy is named after a 21st century mushroom and spore scientist, and he was. Think if they called him Egon from Ghostbusters, 'I collect spores, mold and fungus' but it's space fungus, driven originally by macro tardegrade, cribbed from a video game.
The Burn was incredibly silly. The Kelpians aren't Q like either, and there is no way dilithium would explode if he was. The producers, I don't blame the writers. The signed off in it. Thery did not care about how or what dilithium was. A simple check of the Memory Alpha and other canon sites, or ask Mike Okuda, would have made sense.
Dilithium is merely the crystal structure that keeps the matter and antimatter from directly blowing up and annihilating, because of it being both in space, and subspace, so matter nor antimatter can interact with it when active. Sure, silly science, but more realistic than someone growing subspace spores to fire up a magic drive. But Lithium doesn't drive ships. That is fiction. It's inert already.
Lilhium is even a real element, although gaseous not crystal. According to the Trek lore, dilithium cannot explode! It is not a reactant. It is a solvent and inert as a solid. They could have looked this up. Dilithium cannot go inert over long distances and cause 'the burn' at all, unless this show is set in Sillian space.
In it's crystalline state, dilithium is inert! No burn. The engines would have simply shut down and their magnetic containment would have shut off to prevent a warp core breach. If the ships were not designed with that failsafe, they were crap. Well no, by ther shows logic it should snap up some sort of matter to antimatter inert field to prevent breach.
Separating the engines from the ships makes no sense either, if your reactor chambers are in he belly of each. It would be akin to taking the stack off a nuclear reactor because the core might explode, which would...wait for it...explode the reactor.
Spore drive would if anything be outdated tech by 3190. It would be akin to finding the antekathera device presently intact and not knowing what it does.

  • @TonySquared09
    @TonySquared09 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

This is a similar issue with these new personal transporters. People can just appear anywhere at will. Some of Star Trek's charm is the journey to get to places.
Also, I kinda wish, ignoring the other issues with Discovery, if they had found Discovery in the 32nd century after the 'Burn' happened (still a ridiculous story plot). So season 3 was the start of Season 1 etc. They really did thumble this show.
But going forward since that we are getting Starfleet Academy, I think it would be cool if the Pathway drive would be the new warp drive where you are going between Galaxies because at this stage, Slipstream has been a thing for centuries and it seems that all corners of the Galaxy have been touched at this time.

Discovery shot themselves in the foot so bad with the spore drive and personal transporters. They don't need shuttles or transporter rooms anymore. "Beam me up" isn't even a thing. Nothing happens in transit because they're never in transit. They just boop in and out. The don't even use turbolifts anymore. It's ridiculous and makes everything very uninteresting.

Real talk, if the only thing standing in the way of the spore drive working was a little genetic engineering, there's no way federation/starfleet leadership wouldn't work out an exception clause for JUST that one modification. There's simply too many advantages to being able to travel anywhere in the universe instantly.
    But yeah, I'm glad it's gone/limited to 1 ship.

Well my headcanon still is that Q finally found a way to get rid of all the Mold in his room (the universe) making the mycelial network useless in the process. - Would have been a perfect episode for ST lower decks. Right after Q finding out that his lost kid (he made in that Voyager episode) took the form of some kelpien and happened to bust a lot of Dilicium and starships while screaming for his mommy. Since Q is Q he laughs and waves his hand making it to have never happened. After this moving on to senior Picard and showing him what a shadow of his former self he had become and giving him a second chance to be the captain who brings the Federation back on its hopeful and benevolent course.

Here's a thought. The major problem with the spore drive is diplomatic.
Remember how they ended the Klingon war by depositing world busters beneath the surface? All the Federation's opponents even if not aware of that incident can at least envision it. A drive capable of bypassing any and all planetary defenses. Anywhere. A fleet of such ships would be an unstoppable military force. While the Federation would of course never use them like that (again), The mere possibility would unify those who are not part of the Federation and like it that way.
Either the Federation accepts a treaty banning any more spore drive development & production. Or they get overwhelmed/wiped out. The limited number of examples already in existence (2?) while dangerous, could probably be tolerated as being of limited impact militarily. Especially since the Discovery, while upgraded, is still an antique.

Duhscovery is horrible from the very firat episode.
One infinitesimally small potential good aspect is that when all is said and done, Stammitz will be held in higher regard than the mutinous, war-starting, escaped convict Mikey-Spock.
